Trip to China

Always seems like a pretty diverse crowd here so I figure i'd ask and see if anyone knew of any good 2 to 3 week tours in China. Me and my friend are planning to head there this summer and we've got a budget of about $2,000 each. If anyone knows of anything good just let me know. Thanks.

it is polite to bow to everyone...you must do this all of the time and often.

As a joke, tell them that you're a secret spy sent by North Korea to tell the government about the upcoming invasion. Then act as though you accidentally released top secret information.

Ask them why they took jack bauer!

Visit the Shaolin Temple and learn some kung fu

Everytime you see somebody just say "Diggy Mao!" while pointing at them. I don't think its chinese, but they will get the point of friendship.

Actually, I understood perfectly. This, however, could have something to do with the fact that I have just finished reading Trainspotting again, and am now reading Porno (Trainspotting's sequel, not a dirty magazine).

Ah, phonetic Scottish. Swift, efficient delivery of to the brain

Don't know about any tours. But if you had 2 grand to spend your ticket will be about half that. But if you had 1 grand left to spend for 2-3 weeks in china, you're a baller straight up, even in the big cities like shanghai.

Recommendations...

If you're in Shanghai, there isn't too much historical stuff to check out it's a good place to party and eat... go to nanxiang temple and get some xiao long bao (steamed dumplings) fuckin bombay!

Suzhou and Hangzhou are whatevers. Footmassages run about 6 bucks an hour. If you're in Shenzhen, go to queen spa for 25 bucks you get an hour massage, you can relax in their pools/jacuzzi's watch a movie in their lounge and also you get a sleeping pod to stay in.

if you want to check out history stuff then go to beijing or xian. Guilin is supposed to have some awesome scenic stuff but i've never been there.

Tours are shithouse. Do some research, read some books, look at some forums, browse the web etc to figure out the places you want to go and go there. Half the fun is trying to get by and making friends with locals.

A big fucking plus one.

If you do a tour, you can pretty much guarantee yourself a lame trip, while paying maximum $$$ for it. Trust me, the tour companies will see to that

Like Astroboy said, do your research. You need to be going there with an idea of what you want to do, and what to see.

Eat where the locals eat. It's the best Chinese food you'll ever find.

One thing you need to know is if you haven't been to SE Asia or developing countries, you may find it hard to get used to the hygiene in rural areas especially... so be prepared. People will do stuff like blow their nose into their hand then wipe it on a wall. Or you may find yourself taking a dump in an outdoor toilet where the refuse is routed straight to the pigs trough, so as you're taking a crap you can hear these scarily huge black pigs munching on your excrement outside.

Lol, sounds like fun. So no to tours? This one we have been looking at looks pretty tempting though, and they seem to allow freedom and time to walk around and explore on your own so its not like they'll be holding our hands 24/7. I just don't think me and my friend would see nearly as many interesting things if we try to organize it ourselves.

I say plan your trip yourself and do some walking tours in some of the cities if that's what you really want to do.

Usually tours don't give you the real feel for what a country is all about.

theyve got a fence...supposed to keep mongolians out.

good thing they werent fighting black people, black people can jump fences with ease.

Go to Beijing for a week, Shanghai for another. Do the historical stuff in Beijing: Forbidden City, Great Wall, etc.
Shanghai is more of an artsy, social place. Check out the museums. Eat out. Go clubbing. Shopping.
Check out the Bund (on the river); The Pearl Tower; Xin Tian Di, which is the more stylish dining area in the city. Other nightlife ideas: http://www.smartshanghai.com
Screw tours. Get the real Chinese experience with some locals, or the Expat experience with foreigners.

If you're up for surfing, Hainan has the reputation for the best beach in China.
