Can I borrow your ear please, only for a half hour.

Hey all,

Like many, I've spent all my *broke* years mixing beats on VDJ and Traktor etc. About a month ago I bought my first pair of decks (2 CDJ200s and a DJM400). After a lot of practice I seem to be pretty confident in matching beats and the basic stuff.

But in making the transition from 'beginner dj' to something along the next level just wondering what's missing.

Anyway I thought this would be the best place to ask for some critical (and noncritical feedback as to what im doing right, what im doing wrong and what I should change to improve.

I've uploaded a recording of a half an hour set I did at a bar which I was lucky enough to be granted because I knew the DJ there. The tracklisting is as follows:

first 2 mixes your transitions are very short.
Before you start djing , you should understand production od these tracks.
I have "Larry Mountains 54" too , so i ll give the example on it :

start counting beats until track reaches apx.1min.In this case is 58 secs.On 58th sec track is opening and u ready to do fade out on previous track.The way I mix(Sander K. school), 58th sec is my transition point of low`s.There exactly 128 beats in 58 secs of this track.128 divides 2 = 64:2 = 32:2 = 16:2 = 8:2 = 4 x 4 -> Trance , House , Techno MUSIC. It`s all the same.That`s how production works and it`s very connected to djing too , cuz u ll notice on 24th sec of the track producer added one more kick besides tha main one, and off course u gonna switch mids at that point.It`s the way I do and it sounds the best.I`ve tried different ways too, and im about to have a perfect sound in every transition.Some dj`s will disagree with me , but i`m talking about connect. between djing and producing.When you sit down and think about what im saying your dj world will look much easier and better.

Ok mate heres a few comments from me. I'm not a professional or anything, never heard these tracks before & don't know jack about this style but why let that stop me?

track 1 into track 2 - I think it's difficult to do a transition at the end of a breakdown like this.

track 2 into track 3 - very short transition, sounds like you just switched tracks. Use EQ's to soften the transition, keep the tracks layered longer.

track 3 into track 4 - sounds like outgoing track had almost finished when incoming track started. Try starting incoming track sooner to keep the mix tighter & the tempo up. Keep an ear on the beats

track 4 into track 5 - pay attention to the gains when bringing new track in & try to use the EQ's to give a more gradual transition maybe leave some mids on outgoing track a little longer?

track 5 into track 6 - Spot on mate

I think EQ's is the toughest nut to crack as it often makes all the difference in a transition. Keep working on the EQ's & keep us up to date with how you get on

Sweet deal with the gear, I got the same stuff just at the end of December, I love them. I think im semi retarded though cos im not sure how to listen to your set... educate me

Work on the Eq's dude.

I usually bring a track in with the bass at 7o'clock, the mid and highs at 10o'clock.

I usually switch the mids and highs on each channel within 7 beats before the end of a bar and usually switch the new tracks bass to about 10o'clock with the outgoing track around eight.

Just my personal preference and it seems to 99.9 % of the time.
