The non existence of the Canadian film industry

Quebec movies owned the Genies once again for a fourth or fifth year in a row winning 21 out of 27 awards...

Do these guys in Toranna, Deadmonton and Chinkouver even know how to hold a camera and shoot a semi decent movie?

I agree.
Quebec has some amazing movies coming out, and this is coming from an anglo.
Even Hollywood is starting to take notice. The american version of Horloge Biologique is in the making.

horloge was friggin funny but that was in 2005. I'm just wondering how the americans will improve on it, what will they keep and leave.

The Rocket was amazingly good, Bon Cop Bad Cop for a "commercial" movie owned everything at the release.

yeah, Quebec's films are decent but Vancouver is more profitable for ppl working in the industry, far more than the rest of Canada. Hollywood hates Vancouver.

a US film maker debarking in Chinkouver and hiring some camera monkies doesn't make the film any more Canadian.

come on.

I never said it made it more Canadian, just more profitable for ppl employed by the industry (outside of Canadian producers and a few Canadian actors). Your avatar could use some hummus

EDIT: Quebec has always put more money into the arts. Now if you're talking French films vs English films.. Canadian anglos have it tough competing with the beast down south.

Hollywood North = Vancouver = full of american project, hardly any Canadian ones... WHERE AS...

Quebec has a better market for films due to a variety of issues but mainly because of it's star system which is far more advanced than the Canadian star system.

Quebec has a foundation called SODEC that distributes about 25-45 million dollars a year towards QUEBECOIS films.

We were about to have Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Jim Carrey and a heap of other celebrities in town but THANKS TO THE FUCKING UNIONS... they took their projects elsewhere...

Fucking bullshit....

But yes Malek I agree, Quebec films > Canadian films. That's why i consider myself a quebecois filmmaker. :P

yes, the subsidies are great in Quebec, whereas BC subsidizes the Americans so they will continue to shoot there. It is good for tourism in BC (even though they sometimes make Vancouver into Seattle for geographical purposes), and for extras and the odd local Canadian actor. There are other benefits as well.

Then you gotta couple this with talent imperialism, where the US swallows up all our anglo talent (ie: ppl going south to find fame and fortune). Aside from the monetary reasons listed above, there are some cultural and linguistic reasons as to why Quebec is putting out better films than anglo canada. Quebecers sometimes see things differently, which can also come across as more uniquely. Uniqueness (sp?) sells.

Also Quebec gov't puts a lot of emphasis in the arts, media, education.. anything that keeps the language and culture intact. Keeping these institutions healthy goes a long way in doing that.

Of course...

then again... only 20% of the projects chosen for funding are english project... that means 80% are french... not fair in my opinion but GRRRRRRRRR.... what the fuck ever happened to equality...

do you mean, 20% of submitted english projects are approved compared to 80% of french project?

or you mean 20% of approved projects are english?

cause the latter is a pretty good number, considering anglophones are about 8-9% of the population and if you count immigrants not even 20%.

Posted by Marcus007 on Feb-14-2007 16:16:

I believe they should not judge projects based on language but based entirely on artistic merit...

20/100 are english projects. 80/100 are french projects.

Posted by malek on Feb-14-2007 16:27:

Marcus, have you thought that maybe there's less english submitted projects?

They're not gonna approve everything in english just to bring english ratio up!

Posted by Spin Laden on Feb-14-2007 16:29:

stick to Quebec porn

Posted by Marcus007 on Feb-14-2007 16:34:

I wish that were so Malek but I called and was told that they received 150 french projects to something around 120 english projects. Of that 80% of the chosen is ALWAYS french, it is not dependent on how many projects they receive.

I just believe they should get rid of this % shit and just give projects based on their artistic merit and profit potential. I'm the biggest fan of Quebecois films and their stars and will continue to be so for the rest of my life but a double standard does exist here.

And yes Quebec porn > Canadian porn. Christine Young, Bruno B, French Fuck Faces, MELISSA DOLL!!!!!

Posted by malek on Feb-14-2007 16:38:

ok now I understand, they're basing it on population ratio or whatever criteria they came up with.

I have a great idea for a film, i'll give you the lowdown on it i just dont want to give too much of it away, well basically its about this whole group of people that are so addicted to the internet the have a hard time leaving thier computers to take a piss, basically what we do is fololow thier really entertaning lives since they do so much in thier day you know. The movie will go something like this Person X sits at the pc, gets on the internet, refreshs web pages a couple of thousand times a day waiting for osmeone to reply to thier petty post . . . and then eventually 10 years later they die of obiesty or a heartattack you pick?

Any feedback would be great

I am sure all of you can relate to such a great story line.

Posted by Marcus007 on Feb-14-2007 21:13:

Man I feel bad for the people who live like that...

tsk tsk tsk
