Try Classical music
It's proven to boost the grades of children who listen to it while studying. Not too sure if it still works at an older age though.
I don't know if would work for all music, because of the comfort and relaxtion you get while listening to your preferred genre, or just those instrumental genres. I know Metal/Goth would do me no good at all even though it's tolerable to listen to at times.
But I'm sure EDM would also work, it's closely related to classical, yes?

No. Because that would make him focus more on the music rather than on the studying.

Well if he's got ADD maybe he'd better not listen to music at all.

actually stuff with vocals is a pretty bad idea because your brain will start tuning into the vocals instead of the study.
When I studied I had to study in silence, I couldn't listen to music, it just didn't work for me. Failing that, classical is probably the way to go.
Otherwise, whatever music you like.
But mainly, if you need music you probably aren't concentrating on your study.

the first discs of Bedrock Layered Sounds 1&2 are perfect for studying.

i agree with this statement. i've never seen any point in listening to music while studying. it'll just distract you and so your studying will take longer and you won't get the stuff as well as you would if you hadn't been distracted.

So true. If you have to listen to music to get something done, that would be cleaning your flat etc..

It's pretty soft songs, and I don't blast em, I dunno but it does help me get the work done. It's almost impossible for me to work without music.

Stop listening to music while studying and your grades will improve.

Reading or Math Problems?
I go with techno like mauro picotto for my math and really play nothing when i am reading

I can't study alone without listening to music. It calms me down somehow an gets me more focused on the task. But I have heard that music containing vocals (specially vocals in a language you're very familiar with) can distract you, so that's probably a thing to avoid.

I like listening to music because it cuts off all the external noise and lets you concentrate. Has to be something unintrusive and stripped down though, else you get drawn into it. Plastikman has served me well when revising.

Hmm actually the evidence is for music with vocals, because vocals use the same symbolic code (language) with reading. It has been shown that even vocals in a foreign language can cause a continuous distraction.
Instrumental-wise there might be interference due to affective reasons. That is, the music piece could be very interesting/pleasant and hence could force the listener to make an attentional shift. Esspecially when there are changes going-on. But its not as continuously distracting as vocal-music.
In any case i suggest something repeatetive like 90s deep'n'dubby minimal techno and NOT trance. In trance, there are lots of stuff going on and i'm almost sure that it will distract you. On the contrary minimal techno worked perfect for me, especially for biologically related stuuf (i don't knwo why)and physics. It somehow made me visualise the stuff i was reading and hence even make me better in remebering.

I like more ambient, downtempo stuff. A lot of times I just go to www.di.fm and play the ambient or lounge radio. That way I don't have to worry about picking songs for any period of time, its automatic and I can focus entirely on the books.
When I do use a CD its something extremely ambient like John Serrie type stuff, b/c any sort of melody or build-up throws me off. Sometimes I just study to the sound of ocean waves, you'd be surprised how soothing that can be.
Also about all the grouches on this website, you'll just have to get used to it. Some people here seem to have a permanent stick up their ass, and enjoy finding threads they don't like so they can make bitter posts in them because they have too much time on their hands.

Ambient=best study music. Something like Brian Eno, you don't have to focus on the music but just have it on in the background...helps me study at least.

Chicane - Far from the maddening crowds album, helped me through a lot of tough learning... Also some good ambient tracks - Like Humate- 3.2 (Bedrock Mix) or Eugina...
