Video encapsulating my BIGGEST pet peeve

This video pretty much sums up my biggest pet peeve right now... people who just stand there on escalators, fat lazy asses blocking so you can't move by them so you can watch people who take the stairs pass you.

They even stand there going DOWN- as if it's so hard to walk down stairs. They even sit there going down while your subway pulls in so you miss it. It drives me CRAZY!

Does anyone feel this way or am I on my own in thinking that escalators are there to get us to our destinations faster, not slower.
Anyway, enjoy the vid!!

I always thought escalators were made to get up and down stairs EASIER, not faster
I NEVER walk when headed upward, but i do stand to the right to make way...

I really hate people stand on both right and left side of the escalator, blocking people who do want to walk up or down.

I thought escalator was made for convenience. For some, that is going up and down a floor faster. For others, it's easier way of getting up and down a floor.

I can deal with folks that stand there so long as a passing lane is left open.

Although it begs the question... if a bunch of swenty-somethings need an easier way top get up one flight of stairs what did elderly people do to get to the top of three story buildings before escalators and elevators were invented?

thats a dumb questions..

they obviosly just walked up the stairs.

Surely you aren't shocked that people are lazier nowadays Dennis, esp. with modern 'conveniences' pretty much telling them to be more lazy.

That's just Toronto. Most cities I've been to have signs for the lazy fcuks.

Relatives to help climb? Or simply crawl?

You do what you gotta do... (And old people aren't *that* infirm)

put one foot on the stair and shift your weight onto that foot, and then put the other foot on the next stair.
repeat until at the top or bottom of the stairs.

Hahahaha on Dennis. Usually I just stand. But I usually stand on the right hand side, so that ppl on the left can walk by. Or if I don't stand on the right for some reason, if I notice someone walking I will move over to let them by.

I hate that too though...at least when I'm in a hurry.

Reminds me of Mitch Hedberg:

"One day, I'm going to go to a mall in town, and shut off the escalator. And since people will be confused, I'll write a sign that says 'Sorry for the convenience, Escalator is now stairs'"

that's what I thought, I would always move to the side (unless I'm rushing too)

Toronto is the only city with escalators where people run up and down like mad, never seen this anywhere in Europe

oh and re: to Dennis' question about elderly using the stairs, well that's almost like asking how people lived in medieval ages, with no electricity or anything

and weren't the buildings only like 3-4 stories high before the escalators were invented anyway?

At least with an escalator, you're going up or down, there is a little effort required for both.

My biggest peeve are the asshats who STAND on the speed walks. Has life come to this, we need assisted walking? FFS people it's a speedwalk, not a human assembly line.

speed walk is that flat escalator in airports right? that's so awesome! and yeah, standing people there IS annoying, because people walking on it are usually trying to get to their gate fast

Posted by Abercrombie on Feb-16-2007 16:28:

In the tube in London... no one in their right minds stands in the middle of an escalator. People know the rule.

Like most people in Toronto don't know the left lane on the highway is for passing, they don't know escalator etiquette either.

Escalators are not rides. Mr. Hahn, I share your pet peeve.

Posted by Cribby on Feb-16-2007 17:01:

I'm lazy in the mornings, on my way to school, so yes, I stand, but on the proper side, AND I try to squish my body so that even fat folk can slide by my side.

I HATE when people stand on the speed walks in airports. it wouldn't bother me if they were really squished to the sides or something, but when I'm trying to walk by and have a heavy bag with me, its just not nice because usually there just isn't enough room to get by.
