BLANK & JONES last night into the morning...

WOW! Blank & Jones were awesome! I've seen them a few times before but last night... they kicked @SS!

Also, not your usual Hollywood crowd but more of a SPUNDAE@Circus crowd. Saw many familiar faces! I had a great time and yes I just got home!

Great music, pretty cool vibe, and.. GOOD TIMES!

Well, I've seen Blank & Jones many times before, but have to say that this was the first time that I left before their set ended. It wasn't because I needed to be up early, but rather due to this kinda monotonous hard house style beat that I heard through most of their songs.

Seems that everything was either remixed hard style or perhaps a track was added into the mix to bring out this fast, overpowering "bang bang bang." It just didn't seem to go with a lot of the music and after hours of this , I got tired of it and went home.

The place was really packed though, and seemed like most of the crowd was enjoying it. Piet and Jaspa came on at 2:30, and since the set times had been advertised as 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., I had thought they would only get to do a 1 1/2 hour set, but it actually turned out to be 4 1/2 hours then! While I was in line earlier in the night, I overheard one of the security people saying "we'll probably not even open that area tonight" (perhaps referring to the upstairs chill area, which was closed off for the first several hours), so I think this large of a crowd may have been unexpected!

Was great to hear some of the local DJ's upstairs who had been at Spundae Circus before, but this area is a smoker's paradise. I had to leave and go downstairs so I could breath some clean air, and a friend said that this night wasn't as bad as usual up there! It's not like this area was open air either, it was covered so felt just like being in Europe. Hopefully they'll put Kristina in the main room when she plays there, or I'll need to invest in a gas mask...

I will give credit to Avalon & Spundae for letting the DJ's spin longer though. Last time I remember that happening was in Las Vegas when Tiesto started at 3:30 a.m. and the owner of club ICE came out and announced on the mic that they were extending his set to 8! I had even commented on the TA forum back then that Vegas has no rules, but in LA everything shuts down at 4 a.m. (sometimes right in the middle of an encore track!) Hey, now I guess we can say that what happens in LA stays in LA too...

I would have made you go longer! I kinda miss my late night/day partying! This new girlfriend of mine isn't much of an afterhours/electro music fan. (I should let her go because of that huh?)

I had an awesome time last night!!!!!!!!
It was so nice seeing familiar faces! I shed a couple tears of joy (I'm such a nerd, heehee). I can't wait for Summer to get hear 'cause I will be down here the whole time. YAY!

The music was great. Who opened up for Blank and Jones? I really enjoyed his set.

I did not take too many pictures, but I will post the ones I have within in a couple of days.

Missed you guys! I am so happy I was able to see you all.
*hugs*

Love how poeple express their love when they get 4 hour sets in LA....

Spundae nights in SF...it's kinda the norm. If it's a big DJ, usually 12:00am - close (4:00am - 4:30am depending on the crowd...if the DJs get tired and their's still an insane crowd, a closer will come on).

Just thought I'd mention that I left at 4:30 thinking Piet & Jaspa had a half hour left to go, max...never woulda thought that they were staying until 7! I just wasn't that into their set this time, was way too hard for my taste, so took off thinking it was almost the end anyway.

Can't think of any time a DJ's played almost 5 hours until 7 a.m. in LA before...maybe a law changed this year or something? I noticed that club Circus with Yahel is supposed to be open until 5 a.m. when they've always closed at 4 in the past (no worries, I've got Digweed tickets that night! )

Oh, and the 2 min. video that I took turned out to have very muffled sound (new cam and think that my fingers were covering the mic, which is just left of the lens barrel, stupid place to put it, Fuji!) Anyway, haven't seen any other vids yet, so if anyone would like to watch one with mostly silence and an occasional beat here & there, just lemme know and I'll post it.

wow! what a night! what a weekend!

michelle and i were a bit tired from attending Red the night before but drug our asses to avalon by 10 to see mike on the terrace. when they finally let everyone up there, mike got on the decks and layed down a very good funky set! had the terrace filled up by 11 pm and everyone was shaking their bootys. it was so great b/c i was surrounded by so many TA's and felt great. set the vibe of avalon for a great night as sarah(TSG) said earlier. and girl i never saw you there!

once mike's set was over went down to catch the opener adam sheridan and he layed down a pretty good set. some slow parts in between but for the most part i dug his set. danced for a good part of it.

it was nice that quite a few TA's got to get up on stage and dance. loved watching eric and his reactions and dancing track after track when blank and jones got up there. i always love watching people and their favorite djs. i liked their set and i absolutely went crazy when they dropped life less ordinary by rank 1!!!! and riia went crazy too! i'm pretty sure i danced for like 5 hours straight. my legs were like rubber but i was having a great time. Piet and Jasper are so very nice and thanked us and the TA's for all the support. they had a blast in LA and i was happy that they spun until 5:30.

we bolted right after their set b/c all the cheese from after hour power started crowding the stage and the club so by 6 we headed to after hours where we didn't manage to leave until 9 pm sunday night so glad i didn't have to work today. i slept until about 1:30 pm today. was a bit bummed i never made it to joseph's for the one year anniversary but i was having too much fun hanging with friends and dancing at afterhours.

good times and so great to see so many TA's there. if that happens more and more each weekend then i have a feeling the vibe at avalon will shift a little bit. friendlier and of course fun

Posted by in2muzikk on Feb-19-2007 22:53:

Ah, now it makes more sense, there was another closing DJ from 5:30-7 a.m. Still a 3 hour B&J set though...

Posted by gehzumteufel on Feb-19-2007 22:58:

i have to agree with ya there Sarah(gypsy) that if it continues to flood like sat night the vibe will most certainly improve.

and as for not seeing Sarah (tsg) i almost didn't see her. i saw her only because i was stuck off stage. the asshole security guys wouldn't let me up there. i tried but he wouldn't let me. oh well.

hey Ben, I thought you got VIP? Guess I looked like too rabid a fan with the t-shirt & all ...never got a wristband from them here, but great to see so many of the TA's up on stage!

well i had access to everything BUT stage. the first guy was chill and let us on stage even though we weren't supposed to be. that may have been the reasoning though. they saw too many so they controlled it more. either way i had fun. thats the first time i have had fun at Avalon since A&B and Ferry over a year ago. all the other times it was ok but the crowd would bump me so many times id just get aggravated.

Yeah, I think that was the best night at Avalon yet...all 3 from A&B plus Ferry! Wondering if they'll outdo it this year?

Posted by DaveT on Feb-19-2007 23:39:

OK, I think it's time for me to say something about Avalon and it's vibe. If you didn't notice, I've been dead quiet about everything. What I'm going to say is of my own accord. I am saying this a fan of EDM and kick ass energy.

I am sure everyone is pretty aware of that I hate Avalon with a passion. Not the venue, but the crowd, the vibe.

When I first caught wind of the news of course I was a bit..well, I wanted to throw things, lol. But then it took pretty much one sentence to make me say, "OK, be patient." ... and it was to the tune of, "Remember how everyone acted when Spundae went at Ruby Skye?"

In 2003, I would say Ruby Skye was like the little evil sister of Avalon in San Francisco. A place that was in second place on my most hated list, a little behind Avalon. Ruby Skye then had a very similar crowd. Shallow, ego, obsessive, hollywood, wants to get drunk, cracked out, whatver...they didn't give a rats ass about the music and only cared about themselves and how they were perceived. What made Avalon worse is that it's a bit of a dingier place and can hold more people. Ruby Skye is like upscale outside and in.

When Spundae left Ten15 (which could bring the best vibe around back then, better than any LA vibe ) and went mainly to the new club Mezzanine, everyone was pretty accepting. Mainly because it was a new place with a bit of an underground feel. Prob with Mezzanine then and still now is that it's a word-of-mouth or too of a DJ-centric place. People just don't go to Mezz just to be at Mezz. It's why these days it's mainly a concert venue and not that much of an EDM venue. Anyhow, then Spundae started doing a lot of Friday nights at Ruby and people were raging mad. Including myself. I was pissed. One of my fav promoters around suddenly booking at the place in SF I hated the most.

But you know what? Since they started going to Ruby Skye, it's only made both Spundae SF and Ruby Skye better. The vibe today at Spundae events at Ruby Skye has progressively gotten better over time; it's like night-and-day compared to when Spundae first started doing events there. It's also allowed Spundae SF to become more well-rounded on the talent they bring to SF. Looking back to how things were at the end of its Ten15 tenure, pretty much Spundae SF was bringing in largely all trance DJs. But these days, it's definitely well-rounded.

So seeing what has happened here, I am actually pretty calm and going to be patient to see what can happen at Avalon. And I just suggest everyone else be too. As much as everyone can complain, it's you all who will be a large part of any change that can occur. Yes, there are other things that surely need to be addressed and I imagine those concerns have at least been expressed, or at least I hope so...cause I truly don't know. Anyhow, it's a matter of being supported and doing your best to help the scene thrive no matter the venue. Let's hope things go well so the scene in LA can continue to thrive.

Dave out.

haha yeah i think the TA regulars are quite aware.

and yeah i do agree with you we have to "wait and see" because it sure hasnt really started yet. it started officially but things are still getting worked out and what not. as a lot of us said before the vibe sat night was great. and as i said thats the first time i have thoroughly had fun at avalon for OVER a year. dec 3 2005 to be exact. none of the times after that have ever been that great.

i am being open about it even though i am still a bit bitter they left circus but some of the things i heard sat are very valid and good reasons. it is unfortunate but things had to be done.

I had such a blast seeing so many people at Avalon....The whole Spundae crew, it was such a fun night to see that many people you know. Left about 4:30 am, was dancing my ass off but I hope the crowd gets better with Spundae being there, woopwoop!

If I hadn't gone up to the front, I probably wouldn't have seen you.
Anyway, what's the big deal with going up stage or back there?

The vibe & music was cool and I had fun this time but not sure when I'll be going back. Damn night cost me $55.00, with no place to dance or have a smoke while sitting down... nah not for me.
