DJ competition at monash clayton on wednesday
ok so there is some dj competition as part of the orientation week at monash clayton on wednesday, it goes for 2 hours from 11am - 1pm, you get 15 mins, i think im gonna have a go lol. its sponsored by pioneer and the prize is 2x cdj200s, a mixer, headphones, t-shirt and cap around $3000 worth the poster says. its on at other campuses at other unis too, so it seems pretty big hehe. you just rock up with your cds, sign an entry form or whatever and have your 15 mins of fame hehe. it should be good for a laugh if anyone wants to come down and see me humiliate myself. does anybody have any tips for this kinda thing? 
Have to head down to Clayton some day this week, may as well make it Wednesday with this in mind.
Should be good value.

i'm not hip-hop turntable wizard so plain (hopefully semi decent) beatmatching + flanger might have to suffice
Im going to have a crack at the one at swinburne prahran next week on the 27th, sponsored by kiss fm and mother energy drink. same prize n stuff, just worried since I use vinyl as opposed to cd's, espescially cdj's with a jog wheel as opposed to active platter, will have to pitch ride i think.
Im torn between playing some trancey stuff or more electro punk shit that Ive got into lately, Id play prog but I think itd better to have something more intense since youre only playin for 15min?

that was so fun
wasnt the best organised or anything though, took them ages to set up, nobody around uni knew anything about it or where it was supposed to be, then when they got here one of the cd players cracked it and wasn't working so the guy had to drive off and grab another one! so nothing really got going until almost 1, which was when they were supposed to finish. they were giving out free "mother" drinks though which was nice, cause it was hot, even though the drinks are shit hehe.
they didnt have a "competition" as such right there really, you fill out the entry form and put it in the box, when they are done with the other o-weeks they draw the entry.
so when they had it all set up, they had some commercial house mix cd going. then the first guy got on and played more commercial house, like "proper education" and "put your hands up for detroit", which made me a little nervouse lol. i waited for him to finish his last song then i jumped on, man i was sweating heaps and shaking hahaha. it was loads of fun though! my beatmatching was good, i chucked in effects and stuff too lol. i tried a backspin but i dont think it worked, i think you had to change a setting or something on the cdj but i dunno haha. i fucked up the first mix a bit because when i was fading out i moved the cross fader but it wasnt turned on or something, i didnt check, so the track was still playing then i had to slam the channel fader down haha.
then one of the guys comes up and tells me to turn it down LOL
the promo chicks and stuff were like "eww what is this crap" haha
the guy was cool though, he said they complained about the noise but he told them it was all good, just a different style and the trance had different beats and stuff but he turned the master down, cause it was actually pretty loud haha. my mate told me afterwards that a couple of people were walking past holding their ears LOL
the tracks i played:
human blue - therpsicore
white overtone wizard - onwards and upwards
three drives on a vinyl - greece 2000 (man with no name remix)
the digital blonde - rickashay
nobody was paying much attention so i chucked in the extra song at the end, i was gonna stop after three because there was a 15 min time limit but nobody really cared haha
greece 2000 got me a few compliments so i was happy
there wasnt really a crowd or anything, it wasnt with the other stalls and there wasnt any announcements or anything so my dreams of rocking out to a packed house of uni students will have to be realised another time lol
i think i caused people to walk away too because there were a few more people once the next lot of commercial house came on hahaha
but it was so mad just playing, i loved it. then the guys after me played more house haha. although they said i was good, they liked the different trance so yeah the guy after me played some tune that sampled scarface which was cool! and that was that! now i just have to wait and see if my name gets pulled out of the hat

Banging out trance man thats awesome!
I used to have a DIY show at Clayton, where i played hard trance and hard house, some chick came in one day and I asked me to play some nicer stuff like Jay-Z, i told her politiely to fuck off.
Although I was playing some chilled stuff one day, and played The Garden by Faithless and a group of people came and wanted to know who faithless were, that was cool.
