Informational books about techno/rave culture?
Basically, my question is, are there any? In case I end up studying it seriously in college, or even if I dont, I want to know where techno comes from, specific examples, and lots of general information about the music and culture. What I basically know now is general rave info since I've been to some but then again I'm from NH so I've never been to a really massive one, and I'm continually getting more and more songs. Technical history info is what I'm looking for, so can you reccomend any books that are accurate?
Here are a few books you need to find at your local bookstore
Rough Guide To House
Rough Guide To Techno
Rough Guide To Drum'N'Bass
Last Night A Deejay Saved My Life
These are books about the dance music history and culture and basically how it grew. The House/Techno are my faves.....love those. Basically they have bios of artists and when you read the entire book, you understand the history and who was responsible for what.
I read an awesome book called Generation Extasy, don't remember the author, but it pretty much takes the whole genre from begginigs of Chicago and Detroit house thru Balearic/Ibizza period, thru Gabber and Hardcore, thru Trance, thru Jungle and D'n'B to modern dance music etc. Very informative, a lot of tracks listed in it.
The books i listed basically do that.......go thru the history.
there's tons
yeah, "Generation: ecstasy" is awesome.. I have it, but someone borrowed from me, so I can't say for sure but I think it's by Reynolds. You also have "Energy flash" by Reynolds, pretty good.
There's also "This is not a rave" by McCaul, not bad..
I've also heard about "Ministry of Sound: the manual" don't know by who.
And..... if you're interested - "Ecstasy: dance, trance & transformation" by Nicholas something... ?
i use "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Bill Brewster as a reference to the the history of the DJ the book talks about every kind of music culture that used djs (which is every kind). I read it and learned alot
i just found this the other day "this is not a rave: in the shadow of a subculture" by tara McCall...its new and rather good. released by insomniac press in toronto.... www.insomniacpress.com
