U.S. senior tourists break muggers neck
Costa Rica man pulled gun on Americans in Caribbean port, police say

Updated: 1 hour, 42 minutes ago

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - A tour group of U.S. senior citizens fought off a group of muggers in Costa Rica, killing one of the assailants, police said Thursday.

The tourists bus was held up by three men armed with a gun and knife in the Caribbean coastal town of Limon after the group arrived on a cruise ship Wednesday, said Limon police chief Luis Hernandez.

Hernandez said a retired U.S. serviceman whom officials estimated was in his 70s put one of the attackers aged 20 in a headlock and broke his clavicle.

After the other two assailants fled, the tourists drove the injured man to the local Red Cross branch where he was declared dead.

Authorities said they did not plan to file charges against the tourists, who left on their cruise ship after the incident. Hernandez declined to give their names or hometowns.

They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up, he said.

U S A! U S A!

...but seriously, that's awesome.

And you can shoot people who rob you in the U.S. If somebody's trespassing on your property, you have the right to attack him, so long as he is facing you, and is armed (or maybe even if you have reason to believe he's armed...like if he's pulling the pointed-finger-in-the-pocket routine). So if some numbskull kicks in your front door holding a very realistic squirt gun, he's fair game.

Not true. If someone were to break in and get shot, they could sue you for battery.

From what I recall, if he's facing you and is armed, he can't. Then again, I'm not sure on this. Legal buffs?

A person got sued by a robbers family cause he drowned in their pool as he was robbing them.

there was also some guy whose family sued after he died while breaking in, for the billionth time, to a store. The owner had been robbed so many times, by people entering the same window, that he'd installed a lethal security system, and posted a notice to that effect. Well, the guy tried to go through the window, and was shocked to death. I don't know what came of that case, though.

I remember a story last year in some rough council estate in a British city (can't remember which one) a group of youths were terrorizing people mugging people, making it a no go zone. Three of youths started on an old man in his 80's who in return put all of them in hospital, turned out the old boy served for the SAS in North Africa back in WWII.
