Holy shit are you kidding me? His set at M-bar last year was off the hook! Loads of utterly blistering tracks that night, and proper Digweed vortex in full effect. To be fair, Randall Jones blew me away too, that man's got talent.

MSTRKRFT is opening at Warehouse, that's part of the tour. Maybe Randall Jones for a while before them, but that would be at the very start of the night. They're doing DJ sets, not live PA, and unfortunately I thought they were really terrible at the San Francisco event. It was just loud, not good, and had no flow and the tracks weren't that good and they need to learn how to beatmatch.

DIGWEED though, he was fucking incredible last Friday in San Francisco. He played dark and driving and techy all night, some really heavy basslines and beats. Once the bar closed all the people who were only there for mstrkrft left so there was actually room to dance, and Digweed did not disappoint. About 2hrs in he dropped Saints & Sinners - Pushin Too Hard, and then started dropping insane fucked up stuff and going crazy on filters. I recognized some stuff from his new Transitions CD, some stuff that I've been playing lately, some stuff from his recent Transitions shows. Played a new remix of Nathan Fake - Outhouse near the end (I love how that track hasn't gotten old in 4 years now), and closed with APOLLO 440 - LIQUID COOL.

So yeah, missing Digweed would be a crime. After his set in SF, not even Amon Tobin could make me miss it (Though if you can see Amon and skip MSTRKRFT and get back in time for Diggers, DO IT, you won't miss anything worth seeing)(not in Houston anyway)

I know what you mean. I've had mixed results with the 2 sets I've heard from him. The first time was pretty boring but the 2nd time he came around he got me moving. Tough that it's a Thursday though for me. Working Friday

bit late to make that trip, no?

especially if you're thinking about booking a hotel. Good luck with that one.

Posted by shaw on Mar-16-2007 09:33:

um...so, basically, he fking destroyed it tonight. There was more fun to be had, and more great music played than there has been in a long time, at least for moi. I haven't danced that much in a loooooong time (maybe a bit more in September over the course of an entire day @ Pure Nation). To say he redeemed himself from the first time I saw him, last year, in Dallas, when Chloe Harris blew him out of the water, would be a gross understatement. Such great stuff, and I think this has to be the first time I didn't recognize a single track from a headliner over the course of an entire set.

MSTRKRFT was a bit sketchy. I had 3 complaints:

1. The transitions were a bit suspect, pretty much all around. Granted, the only major mistake was due to some sort of hardware issue (track paused for a moment...probably Live crying for more RAM), but the rest of them would have been almost painfully awkward, had they not been on a massive system, with enough power to cover up nearly any EQing imperfections.
2. The MC they had with them started chanting "Ass, & Titties. Ass & Titties. Ass, & Titties, Ass & Titties" to the beat at one time during the set, and it was so loud & so overblown on the highs that it was both painful to the ear and embarrassing to the brain to hear.
3. The track which he was chanting over is about 7 years old, and I've heard it in countless sets. Had it been thrown in properly, I would have loved it, but it just seemed out of place and desperate. I'll have to dig through my collection & find an ID, because I KNOW I have at least a couple sets Felix did about 6 or 7 years ago that included that very same track.

Once they were done, though, it was absolutely wonderful. I can't even remember one moment during the night when I stopped moving, and everything was well-done, and absolutely delicious. I have no idea how the rest of the crowd took it in, as I was all the way in front, and too enthralled to bother looking around to see the reactions, but sheerly from what I'd seen earlier, and from the noise coming from behind me, I'd say it'd be a fair assumption that I wasn't the only one enjoying it. I can't even begin to describe how happy & relieved I am after tonight, particularly after the disappointment I'd felt from the first/previous time I'd seen him. I was absolutely loving every minute of it, and I can't wait for tomorrow.

Lastly, this is the first time I'd ever seen anybody play @ this venue, and I have to say, it's a gigantic step up from the Meridian. Why, if given the choice, anyone would book an event for that place, instead, I don't know. The Warehouse seems just as big, but with an infinitely better set-up. I can't help but think that the Meridian is just a run-down rock hall that's being borrowed for the night for a DJ, whereas it actually seems like this place was built with such nights in mind.

Anyways, I had a blast, met a bunch of new people, and enjoyed every minute of it. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't manage to find any TAs, but I hope you guys all had as great of a time as I did.

See the rest of you tomor---tonight .

I'd like to take this moment to reiterate just how incredibly great the music was tonight. God DAMN. Even though Matthew Dear's set when I saw him this fall in Chicago might be all but impossible to top, what Digweed played tonight was absolutely incredible and right up there. wow.
