Looking around at used DJ Equipment and found this..

looking for some opinions here, I am completely new to the DJ scene and i would like to pick up some dj equipment for not a whole lot of money.

this is what i have found so far..
DENON DN-2500F ($400)

DM1002X (around $100)

just want to know is these would be decent or should i wait it out, and possibly spring for something a little better?

any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

i personally would stay away from cd players like that. if your serious about it go that extra mile and get the pioneer cdjs.

Posted by Batman84 on Feb-28-2007 01:00:

yeah, thats what im leaning more towards to begin with..ah well

how about the mixeR?

Posted by sterilis on Feb-28-2007 01:06:

the mixer you would get fed up with after a few months and will no doubt upgrade.

sigh

thanks man, appreciate the advice!

I'm not sure what the prices are in Canada, but if you have the money, I'd get 2 Pioneer CDJ-200s and a Pioneer DJM-400. It is a basic setup, but are top-notch. A few members on here have that setup. Although they aren't the most advanced pieces of gear, they will serve you well, and most likely fulfill your needs.

denon don't make the greatest tabletop players but their dual units have been used in clubs for years

i know there was one or two models that were buggy, can't remember which though

that mixer for 100 bucks will due you fine for starting out until it either craps out or you simply outgrow it

i think freak or nem might be able to shed some light on which was the buggy denon dual deck(s)

The DN-2400F was the worst one in my experience... it wouldn't play CD-Rs at all (for some of the others it would play them if they were burnt at 2x speed but no faster - when most modern CD writers won't even write that slowly).

The main problem with rackmount decks like that is that they normally have a +/-12% or +/-16% pitch range in a 45mm slider, meaning even moving it as accurately as in 0.1% increments was bloody difficult (none of them would actually adjust any more accurately than that even if you could move the slider that small an amount and many of them would only adjust in 0.2% increments anyway), basically making mixing bloody hard unless you're quite experienced.

I actually still use a pair of DN-1000Fs (one of the first ever DJ CD players, if not the first) on my radio show... it's quite impressive that the things are still going seeing that they must be at least 10 years old, probably nearer to 15:

the studio technology's not the most up to date but I do take a pair of CDJ800s along to use for the bulk of my show - the Denons have play buttons wired into the main desk so it's more convenient for starting tracks while you're talking on air (at the start of the show, for special features etc)... they're a pain to mix with, on the occasions that I have to, although it is just about doable - I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a beginner!

ok looks like my bank account is safe for a little while longer, thanks a lot guys, ill be keeping an eye out for some cdj200s (what i wanted to begin with :\ )

I had a mixer like that - mine was a DM1001. Exactly the same but with even less features (no kill switches).

Bad things:
1) The LED level indicators served no purpose, only the first one or two LED's ever lit up
2) The EQ's aren't up to much
3) The volume in the headphones bore no resemblance to what came out the speakers. This when added to point 1 above meant it was pretty much impossible to get the gains right when mixing
4) Poor sound quality (though to be fair you won't realise this until you eventually buy a higher end mixer & connect it to the same set up)

Good things:
1) It never broke. I bought mine 2nd hand & eventually sold to a friend of a friend. Last I heard it's still going strong
2) You can change the xfader if it does ever break, something not every cheap mixer allows
3) The headphone cue control is great. Twist the knob left or right to hear each channel & turn it to 12 o clock to hear both channels at once. I used a couple of cheap mixers at friends houses & they had horrible independant cue methods. This Numark has pretty much an identical method to my Pio DJM909
4) No FX to get in the way if you are just learning the ropes. I honestly feel that for a beginner FX will get in the way of learning phrasing & beatmatching.

Would I buy one? Well you could certainly do much worse for your first mixer, it's very cheap with good build quality however it has it's limitations & you'll eventually outgrow it. Compared with the cheap mixers my friends had at the time I liked the Numark much more. I have fond memories of mine

Okay. This was at a time Denon's Top Of The Line CD Player. They still can be found today being used.

Price point is too much under today's standards (I wouldn't go higher than $200.00)

Performance wise, a lot of good reviews from that player. If you mix, and starting out it's fine. All you need is a pitch control to blend two songs together seemlessly.

Everything else isn't necessary. A person who can't mix Trance on a Dual CD Player needs to go practice more, and
stop blaming the tools.

Way over priced. That mixer (Like the player) is nearly (or is) 10 years old. $50.00 max for that mixer.

Again, mixing Trance on that mixer (Or any other at that) shouldn't be a problem.

It seems many (Not all) are brainwashed into thinking you need to spend $$$$ buying gear to mix properly. That's far from the truth.

Hope This Helps.

Very true unless you shop in HTFR. Last time I was in there they were still selling this rebranded as Ministry of Sound for around 110 ($215)

2600F or a 2100 are far better players than the 2500- thats from extensive experience of all of them

Ghetto setups for life. Try and haggle the prices and if you can get all that for 350 or 4 bills max and don't see yourself making mad cash in the future, I say go with it.

Start on ghetto equipment and you can play anywhere. All the "brats" I know who started with bomb equipment all just complain and complain when they are to play on a crappier system.

Start on crap kit for cheap, and imo you'll be a overall better DJ in the long run.

well put man, well put..

i'm going to try and talk the guys down in price for these and see what i can accomplish, will report back

Thanks to everyone for all the experienced info based on using the equipment, very very helpful.

in the market to pick up a pair of CDJ100s at the moment as well

Posted by Batman84 on Mar-02-2007 21:51:

well, i broke the bank today and bought a cdj200s, im so excited, im glad i took all your advice, i mean, yeah, start ghetto and work my way up, but i mean thats money that i could have used to buy a nicer cdj.

now i just need one more and a mixer

lol

Thanks again guys!!

I started out with similar gear to that mate. Its better to do that and get the hang of mixing before you splash out on a top end set then find you cant be bothered with it.

Posted by Batman84 on Mar-04-2007 20:46:

just kind of updating on my adventure to buy equipment..

bought a MTX-MX1550 mixer today at a local hock shop, 50 bucks, and it does what it needs to do, i can't go out balls to the wall and get a nice DJM, but this will do for now..

is there any way to oil the sliders for the different channels or whatever, they are a little bit stiff, maybe some 3in1 oil or something?

Co-fuckin' sign on this one!!!

As for the gear. I STILL see that Denon on some club setups. In fact, before tabletops became popular, it was the standard digital setup. Keep in mind, though, that rack mounted cd setups are a bit different than tabletops. The basics of mixing are the same, but the mechanics are somewhat different. If you're accustomed to vinyl decks, you may find yourself having some difficulty on those cd decks.

The mixer is a fuckin' tank!!! I've had mine for years and use it for outdoor gigs. Evetually, you'll want to upgrade, but honestly that Numark mixer will last and it makes for a great secondary or backup mixer for when your Pioneer DJM mixer fails (and it will).

The price isn't too bad but you probably could go a few bucks cheaper. Guess it depends on if the person is shipping it or not. You can get comparable starter dj setups for about the same.

I had the mirrored chrome version of that mixer as my first mixer.

Good little mixer to start out with! I had fun!
