Pitch Bending

Sorry for the noob post, but what does it mean when a mixer has "Pitch Bending"? Is this the same thing as master tempo?

Posted by blacknoizybox on Feb-28-2007 18:01:

never heard of a Pitch Bend function on a mixer if its what I think it is (i.e. slowing down/speeding up of track). that how the buttons on Denon deck and Stanton TTs are called and thats just how they work..

allthough it could possibly be just another name for the adjustment of the track's pitch while maintaining a fixed tempo (i.e. DJM800 "color" knobs)

I don't know of any mixers with pitch bend. Pitch bend is when you temporarily slow down or speed up a track, but "buttons" to pitch bend are only found on CD Decks...

I just touch the sides of the platter to do that. You have that option on the CDJ 1000s and 800s. You grasp the sides and slow it down, or speed it up, like you would on a regular TT.

you can also do it with the 200's....

I don't understand.... the CDJ platter isn't spinning, so how do you slow it down?

turn the platter round with your hand

buttons or use the platter on the deck. the platter is more like a giant knob than anything. also i hear certain brands of vinyl turntables have pitch bend buttons on them..

exactly the same as vinyl... to slow down or speed up the track to get the beats in line

is that so u know how much to move the pitch slider up and down?

cuz isnt pitch bend only temporary?

yeah thats how i do it

nudge the track forward, if beats are in line pull pitch slider towards you, repeat til beats are locked, opposite for slowing it down obviously

Think of the pitch bend as giving a push on the record or by brushing your finger on the side of the platter to slow it down. Once you release your hand it starts to go back to the speed it was originaly at. It's a nice feature to have on a cd player but you can also do the same thing by spinning the jog wheel in either direction.

And yeah, typicaly when you use the bend option you are gonna move the slider in whichever direction necessary to make up for the bend once you release it, otherwise the beats will be mismatched again. It's just a temporary adjustment.
