-- Brian Eno- An Ending (Ascent)
Brian Eno- An Ending (Ascent)
My god, what a tune. Brian Eno is the master of ambient but I think artists like Steve Roach and Milieu are great aswell, but nothing compares to Ascent. Any opinions? I always use this tune when i want to have Lucid Dreams.
A lot of tunes compare to An Ending, it's a truly beautiful piece but it has imo received an unproportionate amount of attention, especially since it comes from a fantastic work like Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. You have the stars tracks Under Stars/Under Stars 2/Stars, and the country ambient tracks towards the end, you could find youself weeping after listening to Deep Blue Day or Weightless.

ill sy it once and ill say it again.
this tune is one of my all time favorites.
The leama and moor mix has always blown me away, I'm gonna check out the original now...
10/10
I haven't heard too much Eno stuff except Apollo and Ambient 1 music for airports, but there are many other drone ambient classics in my opinion but not comparable to Ascent.
Brian Eno- An Ending (Ascent) (A+)
Milieu- Lazy Days On Our Hillside (A-)
Mark Isham- On The Threshhold Of Liberty (A)
Mark Isham- Crash (A)
Milieu- Dream From Above Houses (A)
Steve Roach & Loren Norell- Eceiposis (A+)
Steve Roach- Dreamtime Return (Album) (A+)
++ An Ending (Ascent) was featured in Traffic & 28 Days Later sountracks. I love the whole Traffic soundtrack by Cliff Martinez.

| Originally posted by SMC An Ending is not drone ambient, it has a harmonic progression throughout and it is fairly melodic. |
David Sylvian & Robert Fripp- Bringing Down the light
they play the original at the World War II museum in New Orleans for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki exhibits. Somehow chills up the spine does not quite describe it.
Michael Dow's new version titled "Ascent" is amazing for those who haven't hear it yet. Just released in February
Leama & Moor Mix is the absolute dogs! Love that record.

I also suggest to check the classic album "Structures in Silence" by Steve Roach. Great Ambient record! If you like Eno's "Ascent", i would also suggest to listen to an album called "Souvlaki"(kind of funny if you know what it is) by Slowdive, a beautiful shoe-gaze/dreampop/ambient band form norway. Eno has collaborated with them for the "Souvlaki" record and the result is typical Slowdive fully-reverbed/delayed quitar and synth soundscapes on a more Enoesque spacey/cosmic edge.
Here is a tune by Slowdive, but unfortunately not from souvlaki but from their previous "Just For A day". Nevertheless it has some similar spacey qualities. Check it out.
Slowdive- "Catch The Breeze"

and don't forget Susumu Yokota, another master of ambient music with to many good albums to mention ("Sakura" was one of his great moments). Here's just a small fraction of his work
Susumu Yokota- "Yuen-po"

and ofcourse i would suggest the usual suspects such as Ulrich Schnauss, Jon Hopkins, Arovane, Bola, Helios, Global Communications, Windy & Carl...
here are some samples:
Bola- "Glink" (this is from the album "Soup", which IMO is one of the best ambient records that ever existed)
http://shop.skam.co.uk/acatalog/1.%20Glink.mp3
Bola- "VM8"

Arovane- "Ten Hours"

Helios- "Dragonfly Across The Ancient Sky"

Jon Hopkins- "Private Universe"
http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF224325-01-01-01.mp3
and windy and carl which sound like Eno gone darker...these are more "pure ambient" no beats and stuff...
Windy and Carl- "Undercurrent"

Windy and Carl- "The Silent Ocean"
