Online dating on the decline (and on the way out?)
I thought this might be interesting
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/02/online_dating_s.html
Admittedly this article was written around Valentine's Day (about a month ago) but the point it's making is that online dating is on the decline.
Online dating sites like Match peaked a few years ago and now are struggling

Only 10 percent of Net users questioned in a recent survey said they had recently browsed online personals, compared to 20 percent in 2003. And the decline seems to be quickening. Last year, the figure was 16 percent. |
would it look worse if u added all the kids who now come online, which inflates the user market giving false readings ?
The decline of sites like Match.com probably correlates well with the rise of sites like MySpace and Facebook. Instead of joining pure "dating sites," which still carry a certain stigma, people use more general sites for the same purpose.
Just a conjecture.

Alas, hereforth lies hyperbole of truth being so ubiquitous, it may appear incomprehensible to uninquiring persona. I venture to diverge from notions expressed by mass media and tend to gravitate to grass-roots reporting, which in this case is the basis for my contradiction. |

I read today that Johnny Depp is playing the lead character in Thompson's "The Rum Diary" to be released in 2008. From Wikipedia
A film is in production based upon Thompson's novel The Rum Diary. It is scheduled for a 2008 release, starring Johnny Depp. Bruce Robinson is directing.

The decline of online dating is a definite result of the availablilty of online forums like MySpace and internet forum boards (like this one). Much like the old AOL and Yahoo chat rooms, you can interact immediately with somebody and it doesn't cost you extra.
The downside to this is that many people aren't normally honest about themselves on these places. They portray themselves as they feel they need to be portrayed to attract the most attention. With dating sites like Match.com, you go through an extensive online interview process. This process usually results in matches that are bit more on spot than with random meetings.
Additionally, people are tired of fucking all the time.
Wait....
I viewed on-line dating as a passing fad. Much like the PDA, 50 Cent and the Atkins Diet.
It never gained much acceptance in Australia. Even if I did meet a girl online I doubt I'd ever tell my friends how we met. It's perceived to be an indication of the same sad level of desparation as newspaper personal classifieds.

online dating is pretty lame and totally favors women over men...at least for quick hook ups. but its equally difficult for both men and women to meet someone thats relationship material because almost everyone lies so much about themselves in their profiles.
