Melodyne... or Autotune?

I think I'm leaning towards Melodyne, and saw this video on it that almost has me hooked.

Does anyone use Melodyne and can testify how good it is? Also, does it come with any vocal effects (like reverb, robotize, decay, etc.) I think I like what I see so far, and want to make a decision soon because I got this chick's vocals and she's TOTALLY flat but I can't tell her to re-record because she'll never work with me again lol.

That ain't good, even the best vocalists should be willing to re-record if you're not happy with the recorded material (as long as you don't drive them crazy with it). What if the recording itself got botched and there were clicks and pops?

Anyway - I don't think you can even compare them, really. Melodyne is an entire application dedicated to audio processing; Autotune is really just a basic pitch-correction tool. This is reflected in the price of said tools; Autotune costs a hundred beans whereas the version of Melodyne you saw in that video is the "Studio" version which costs $700. There are less expensive versions that don't do quite as much, but they're still much more than Autotune.

Having said that, Autotune is plenty good for doing what you're asking about, which is correcting intonation problems.

Yeah and Autotune can also do that daft punk effect like on "One more time", if you like that.

Rerecording is the best option if you want a natural sounding vocal. Don't sweat working with an amateur, just tell her you changed the melody or added a new line or verse, record it all over again, and just use the same melody as last time

I tried both the demos back a while.. melodyne kicks autotune's ass any time.

The chick is hot and you don't have the balls to tell her that her vocals suck cuase your still are hoping for the later!!! lol

Good luck either way!!! But from the demo's and videos I have seen Melodyne is way better, more flexible and easier to use.

Melodyne can do a lot more, but if you aren't going to use the other stuff it can do there is no reason to pay more for it. Go with what you need.

Thanks for the replies. Ok so Melodyne looks like what I'm going for, especially since I want to stretch out samples and Logic (what I'm working with) sucks at stretching audio files really far. Although the "One More Time" effect with Autotune sounds enticing! Does Melodyne do any robotizing like that as well? Or are there other specific programs for that?

Well, if she's totally flat, then the vocals need to be re-recorded. The whole point of autotune is to correct slight irregularities in pitch. You shouldn't be using the program to correct an entire vocal performance. If you are, then you're effecting the natural tone of her voice and thereby defeating the purpose of using a vocalist. It's your job as the producer to call shots on whether or not her performance is good or not. There are SOOOOOO many vocalists out there.. if she wants to be a primadonna and not perform, then there are plenty of other vocalists who would be as good or better than her, believe me

Bottom line, AT is for subtle pitch correction, not correcting a performance in it's entirety.

well... they're different, melodyne is better if you have about an hour to sit there going over the performance with a fine tooth comb, I also like its interface better. AT is better as a quick fix, if there's like one wrong note and you just want it out. If the entire performance is a bit off though, your better off with melodyne. But is the entire performance is a bit off, your better of re recording! And get a better vocalist. If she's crap and always flat, why would you want her back?

Why don't you try them out? Both programs have a demo version.
