Digweed & mstrkrft in San Francisco Analysis

Actually too tired to write any thoughts, but..

Here a couple movies I recorded off of an HDV camera I took. There are links to download the files as 720p WMV HD files (downconverted from 1080i) and the embedded Flash versions. Sorry for the clipping in Digweed's audio, he had his monitor speakers LOUUUUUDDD and I couldn't prevent it.

Maybe will add more later. Too tired to think right now.

Awesome vids, so stoked to see Digweed tonight I didn't think MSTRKRFT would play like that at all, I guess I forgot that they're not doing a live show.

Before anyone asks, the track Digweed is playing is Gennaro Rossi - Superfoolish (Robert Babicz Mix)...he really needs to stop playing my tracks

Looks like a blast.

mstrkrfts said had a mix of all kinds of stuff. It was kinda crazy. I didn't know if I liked it or hated it. Think their electro sound is a bit unique and they certainly had the crowd going most of the time.

Digweed's set was very technical, and it seemed intentional. I don't think he was nearly as entertaining as the last two times he was in SF...not even close. But his set was still pretty awesome from a technical standpoint; it just didn't bring as much fun to the party as his last two times here (Jan 2006 in which he just played all kinds of random crazy stuff and it made the night so fun and then late in 2006 he played the dark stuff with a lot of edge and it was flat out amazing that night). What's interesting is last time he played here in SF he had to start a bit faster than he usually does because the opener was banging it a tad too hard (just too hard, bpm was fine I believe around 124). mstrkrft finished around 130-132 and Digweed brought it WAYYYY down, much slower than last time, to start off his set. Digweed last hour was turning out to be pretty awesome but I was so drained tonight that I left at around 3:40am. I think I might be getting the flu bug that has been going in circles around my work and I'm only like one of two people on my team who hasn't caught it...

BTW, sorry for the videos being sooo dark. I actually brought a ($1,000) light kit and used it a little on mstrkrft but by the time I got a good filter to use on it so it wasn't so glaring Digweed was coming on and didn't want the light on him (cause you know, he likes the place DARK).

And yeah, I've seen Digweed's reaction to bright light. About 2 years ago he played MNS and this girl kept trying to take pictures of him and she had this HUGE light on her camera. Everytime she put it on him his eyes would get all squinty and he kept holding his hand up to block the light.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing more videos. When I caught him back in June last year I took a ton of photos. My camera has an orange light that stays on for a second to get the focus right. Most people don't mind it even though I hate having to hold it on the DJ for a couple of seconds, but Digweed fucking hated it. He didn't mind the flash, but he got all squinty, put his hand up and backed away from it. I turned it off after two shots, and the rest of my photos ended up being less than what I'd wanted.

Which is funny; he loves the Xone:92, but all I've ever heard from people is how bright it is.

I thought that the first hour of john digweed's set was pretty lackluster, but the last two hours he definitely picked it up, especially when he threw down Saints & Sinner - Pushin too Hard (Futsureshock remix?), I never danced harder in my life. Also his encore was pretty fucking awesome at around 4, when he threw down some unknown mix of Apollo 440 - Liquid Cool, although i was hoping he was going to throw down the Northern Exposure mix. All in all it was an awesome night, although Sasha's set in November was superior.

it was pretty packed and crowded the first hour and a half of his set, then the floor started emptying significantly, which was good. more room to dance for me, especially up front.

we had a phenomenal time -- both sets were amazing.

i agree that digweeds set last summer was a little better but last night was still off the hook.

I would agree that the set was fairly technical, but in absolutely no way at all do I dislike that. It was very much a "Digweed Vortex" kind of set, with flawless progression and tunes that just pull you in. I loved the slower start, especially after MSTRKRFT had been playing just a bit too hard for my normal tastes. He played a few classics, his last track was Nathan Fake - Outhouse (Valentino Kanzyani Remix), and I heard a few songs over the night that I've heard on other Digweed sets. To me at least, most of it was brand new and I loved it.

Maybe I'm too blind a fan, but even if one Digweed show may have been a bit better or I enjoyed one a bit more, comparing one Digweed set to another is like comparing sets any of which could be considered one of the greatest of all time from anyone. This was my first time seeing him in California, and if his other sets here were better than this you guys are truly lucky people. It wasn't my personal favorite Digweed show, but it was fucking awesome nonetheless.

Dave, great vids, if you've got more post 'em up! We need to get pictures going too. And if anyone recognized more tracks from the night post em too.


god I wish I had a way to get to LA tonight....

His last track was Liquid Cool by Apollo 440. He still played a couple of more tracks after Nathan Fake.

i thought hoj and mstrkrft were sick. the first half of digweed's set kind of dragged though. his two 2006 appearances were by far better because neither of them had lulls. i was disappointed having never heard digweed mix an hour that did so little. i was sure he was gonna go somewhere with it by the end of the night though and sure enough the last hour is where he redeemed himself. that's when the heavy prog basslines and filters started getting more play. by then i was so tired i was only able to enjoy them from a couch though... i ended up leaving early cause i left my earplugs in my car and the spl was beginning to give me a headache. i tried to tough it out, but it only got worse as it went on so i said fuck it, time to get breakfast and ptfo

although i love digweed, i admit i'm sometimes bored during the first halfhour/hour of his sets. hopefully that won't be the case tonight

dave t, those were great videos!! thanks so much! would love to see more videos if you got time.

also gotta agree that last night's set wasn't as much fun as his last visit. def dark and harder...when he dropped the outhouse rmx, it sounded like a trance song compared to the rest of the mix. i couldn't get into the first hour too. i still had a great time, but def not as accessible as his last two shows. decent crowd last night without any nonsense.

Darker and harder is why I loved it. Mostly for the "darker," but it had almost a techno edge to things. A lot of the music I like anyway is probably in the "less accessible" category, and I definitely was into the first hour.

by all accounts his january and june 2006 sets at ruby skye were way better. i believe he went 4 hours both nights and nobody had any complaints about anything... i still had fun last night though.

just got back from his LA show - left at 345 to beat the valet line...

i'd have to say both AOS and Masterkraft were much better than Diggers tonite. much like the first post, technically his set was great and there were some cool tracks, but overall i was disappointed...his show on NYE with Sasha blew away tonite. that set was much deeper and darker and nasty and just flat out better. honestly i've never seen a Diggers show that was as good as a Sasha show IMO - i know that's blashemy on TA but oh well - i've been clubbing longer than 99% of the peeps on here so i do have some cred in terms of opinions/reviews....

MSTRKRFT would have been a lot more fun if they could actually beatmatch :/

That said, AOS was on point tonight, great tracks...really got the floor moving. Sorry to say, no one can touch Digweed. From track 1 he was insane!
