DJ Flurr's songlist for the aspiring Hip Hop DJ

ok, when i spin, i start at any bpm and then work up or down through songs by bpm's. i usually start around 100bpm though... i organize my music by bpm (in serato). so if i start off at 110,i'll work down to 80 and then jump to 160, or i'll work up to 160 and jump down to 80. there is info all over this site on how to mix hip hop, so i won't go into that. i gave you a list of good songs ranging from 80 to 160 bpm. this is just a start, but its good to have at least 1 song for every bpm when you start your hip hop journey. then when you add songs you like, you will have more than 1 for a lot of the bpms and can easily mix up and down through the diff bpm's. these are new to old rap songs. i put the best song i had for each bpm (my opinion) on this list, so you should be getting off to a good start. I am experienced and have been mixing hip hop 3x a week (4hr sets) for the past year. I wish i had this list when I started...

Well played, this is great. Some friends of mine ran a DJ school and they used lists like this all the time.

This is great considering I have my first non-trance/house party coming up.

what the hell is with all these recent pop dj threads?

underground is where the heart's at people...
music for the soul, with a positive world outlook - this world is turning to a decadent, impatient, violent, enslaved, instantly gratified piece of horseshit

if you need money go to school and get a job and save music for the people who love it more than anything in the world. half the people on this list have more money than entire towns across the world

who cares what the motives are? It's music. Judge it in and of itself. If it's popular, who cares? That makes it a worse composition? Gee, Mozart & Beethoven really suck, then, what with being so well-known and all.

Someone's got to do it, and everyone has to "pay their dues" somehow. You don't think John Digweed didn't play a Top40 gig before getting booked at Renaissance?

Is there seriously hip hop out there that's 160 BPM?!

It's usually 70-130, anything higher just wasn't divided by 2. "Shoulder Lean" for example is a really slow song, but according the list its not (152). The groove is really at 76 BPM.

Posted by david.michael on Mar-05-2007 18:52:

Right... it's more of a "compatibility chart" of sorts.

Well I said USUALLY, some hip hop songs can be higher such as that song. Pump it's groove is definately NOT at 77. Basically I think of BPM in terms of the groove, Your gonna feel the groove of Pump it at 154 BMP, but its not incorrect to say its 77 BPM.
