I really want to start getting serious with my DJing. need your insight

Hey What's up guys/gals?

So yeah like the subject says, I really want to get serious with my DJ'ing career. So far the only type of events I've done are house parties, university parties and highschool dances, and unfortunately a lot of them have been hip-hop top 40 stuff. Im moving to LA in about 6 months and really want to start playing at clubs or at bigger venues, with the music that I love only. Im also, only 2 hours away from the bay area (SF) and Sacramento. I want to make a proper promo CD to send to clubs, and I was wondering if this type of set would proper for clubs to hear as a promo. I made this set a few days ago, it's only an hour and it has like only 1 bad transition. I have no problem making another one and perfecting it.

1.) This thread should be in the DJ Booth and/or DJ Promotion section of TA.
2.) To find people such as yourself near you, I'd suggest using your local forum.

try the westcoast forum. a lot of us who post on there dj in clubs in the la area. i have gotten gigs though there and also booked djs who post on here. it is a great place to start.

make as many freinds in the scene as you can. go out to clubs as much as possible. try going out at least three times a week. you never know who you'll meet so make some cards and carry them everywhere you go.

its hard work. especially if you work full time and go to school full time...i don't get much sleep. if you really want to do it you must make as much time as you can deidcated to djing.

Good luck even getting a raised eyebrow from promoters with that pile of dated tunes.

firstly u'd have to have tunes that are way more up to date and alot less commercial than this to be noticed.

which is exactly why you bypass the need for getting noticed, by setting up your own night.

If it doesnt lead to anything bigger, then at least you've always got your own night a week/month to express yourself and your hobby.

And to be honest, I think its rare to find promoters here who really know their shit and are into the music. This promo would probably work better on most of them. Seriously, if they're gonna book you, they're gonna book you...because they probably think that you'll bring people into their club and make them money. The bottom line for them is, what do you have to offer, and strangely, music is usually not at the top of the list.

Of course, I would rarely want to play for those people Instead I'm trying to find like-minded people to play/work with, somewhat similar to what Michael suggested. I think its alot more beneficial in the long run to get on board with people who share your mindset to some extent...

just play wat u enjoy the most i think would be the best thing to do. make sure u have all the most recent tracks so u know wat is out there but if u dont like them then just go with older ones which u do enjoy, if u try and please others with stuff u dont really like yourself you wont have the best tracklistings in the end anyway.

Like a few of the others said, it is definately more beneficial to set up your own night. The way it works over here in Ireland anyway is that you pay the club/venue a fee to have use of the room. You then charge a cover fee at the door to breakeven/make a profit. There is a lot of time and effort required in setting up your own night but there are far more rewards than playing for a promoter.

If you do get a gig playing in a club for a promoter or for the club itself, obviously it is a great start but there are a few drawbacks. Very few promoters give you the freedom to play what you want, 99 times out of 100 they will want to you to keep your music within the genre/style of their night, which is understandable but still restrains you from playing the music you love. On top of that, if you dont get the crowds in, they arent going to hang to you for to long. Add this to the fact that if you get huge crowds in, you are not likely to see any increase in the amount that the pay you.

If you choose to run your own night, you are responsible for every element of it, from advertising to what tunes you are gonna drop. The fact that you have paid a fee for the club/venue will give you the incentive to get as many people into the night as possible and it is down to you to spread the word, advertise, promote, design the posters/fliers etc.... This gives you a sense of the volume of work involved in getting a club night up and running. The main benefit for me anyway, is the fact that you can play whatever YOU want. Whether you love tech house or epic trance, then you can play it! The fact that you have total control over the whole night pays dividends. Ok, so maybe you dont manage to breakeven, pull the crowds or whatever...you will gain so much experience in many aspects of the club scene....promotion, advertising, the layout of the club, the theme of the night you are running, financial aspects, seeing how your favoured style of edm is received by the clubbers....it all gives you vital experience and imo opinion, it gives you a much more rounded knowledge of what it takes to make it as a dj/promoter rather than the dj who plays a couple of hours for some promoter every 2 weeks. Give it a shot, if it flops you will learn from your mistakes. Dont give up easily. But if you continuously fail to get any sort of crowd or decent night going...maybe its not the career for you
