props to you sean for keeping the show alive!
i guess it makes it technically 6 years old ?
that just might be the longest running trance radio show in the city, and that's pretty damn cool thanks to mirka for coming up with the great idea and keeping things going

Posted by evb on Mar-06-2007 23:36:

Well done Sean!

There was no one better to take the torch and run.

Cheers to the Yak!

Great work Mirka, Sean and everyone else who has helped keep this show alive for so long.

this makes me so sad, should I stay or should I go????.....hmmm relay ??? LOL Sean you totally helped me out and were above and beyond (no pun intended) what I could have ever wanted for the show...
Thank you

Hey guys

Alot of people have expressed disbelief at wonderment at my stopping the show. Two people were even angry about it.

I told them to spend every Friday night up at the station.

There are several reasons for leaving:

1. Im at a transistion period in my life, where im not sure if ill be leaving town for school or work. No, I am NOT deploying to Afghanistan. I must be free to leave if I have to.

2. I am having a hell of a time getting good guests. Radio shows just arent a priority for the few djs not switching to prog or electro or stopping altogether. The organix guys (besides Goa Pete) never return my inquiries.

3. I find it a great burden on my time now that Cyber WEDNESDAYS is up and running.

4. Vlado is a lazy pile of it who'd rather build robots on saturday morning then listen to trance friday nights. He's still hilarious pimp master, but I've got no support.

5. My parents dont like me coming home at 2:30am on friday nights because I borrow their car and have to drop it off.

6. I want to stay in Fridays and play BF2 and eat chips.

7. I dont have time to do the tune research I used to do.

8. No one calls me anymore

____________________________________________________________________

However:

I should advise you that there is an opening to take over the show. You can rename it, you dont have to mix, it would be your show, you just have to show up every night. Atm it is 11-2am but it could be shrunk to 11-1 or 12-2

Contact me if you are a serious person looking to put in a serious effort. You must treat this like a job somewhat, unfortunately.

Sean

Hate to see you go!

Good work over the past couple of years Sean.

But the best thing you can honestly do (coming from experience) and I'm talking for EVERYONE, is go see other parts/cities of the world. If you feel like you're hittin the repeat button on life, it's time to start looking for another button as I always say so good on ya.

I think the show should definitely be taken over. If not for full on trance then at least some form of EDM, but hopefully keeping it more on the progressive, danceable side of things. Please not DnB.

Perhaps the offer/news of this opening and opportunity should be shared elsewhere as well - and not left up to TA advertising only. Just a suggestion.

hey good work with your show, me and my buddy are glad that we got the chance to be on. too bad its over though good luck with whatever your up to next.

Posted by krysx25 on Mar-12-2007 04:03:

Hmm I remember I was gonna something with this show
a while back .. but yeah .. I can't commit to each and every weekend.
I can do one Friday out of the month.

Angelo can maybe do 1 or 2 fridays and then all we'd
need is one more person .. eh?

OR have 4 people on rotation .. something like that ..

just an idea .. I donno ..

i'd be willing to play every other friday....so i guess what i mean is i'd split it with another person?..pm me if interested. what station is this? haha.. i was planning on starting a bi weekly show

Posted by AquaYak on Mar-14-2007 23:10:

thats a good idea, but im afraid people will always cop out on you and they need a firm commitment. This is a job, and that means every week. Angelo has been doing the show once every 8 or 9 weeks, sand cant be counted on for help at all.

Posted by apri_peel on Mar-15-2007 00:44:

the station wont allow a show to happen once a month?

there is hope yet! caleb and gavin are still running boomch radio every tuesday. im not sure what they play anymore, havent listened to the station cause i work during that time, but! there is still an edm show on our fm waves

the show is on cjsf, the sfu radio stations, 90.1fm, for the person wondering about it

probably still along the lines that they've been doing the past year or so. =)

no, the station wants a firm commitment. if they can't get one, i'm sure they can easily give that slot away to another show. having 18 different people who each have a certain day or availability won't cut it.

Have you thought about doing a prerecorded show? It wouldn't be as fresh as live, and I'm not sure if that's what the station is even looking for.

I'll definitely be calling in tomorrow, I might request some stuff for the last couple of shows too.

Posted by AquaYak on Mar-16-2007 06:51:

post it in here, i wont be there, its angelo's show.

It would still require someone (ie Sean) to go there, which is what he doesn't want to do. He's either moving out of the city, or at the very least, is bummed out by the reception and bummed out by the late nights and the commute.

While it's plausible that if he somehow managed to get his recording up there, without him having to go there (ie mail, or sweet talking someone to download it onto the PC there) AND if he managed to sweet talk the guy on before him to flip it on, there'd still have to be someone going up there afterwards to flip on the midnight tapes that air when the station is off air. AND IF somehow, sean could record a show weekly, get it up there without having to drive up there, get someone to put it on, and somehow switch it to the next gig (be it live show which might not then be a problem or the zzz tapes that go on after the last show), there's still big drawbacks.

The station pretty much demands someone is there (to answer phones, conduct radio chatter/play music, man the equipment, etc, perhaps its even a law or a station rule) and secondly, when I thought about applying for a show two or three years ago (when we were trying to get SFU Surrey involved because there were a lot of edm fans there, enough almost that we were pushing for our own internet station at TechBC/SFU Surrey and I was a part in forming a club [that lasted only a few weeks since administration didn't have any desire to allow us to do what we wanted to do to any degree]), there is demand for time slots/shows.

Sean doesn't want to do this anymore, he's giving us/anyone a chance to keep an edm show going, and if no one can commit to basically taking over the show like he and mirka before him have done, then he'll let the station decide what to do with the slot.

I feel I have to put my two cents in since this was originally my baby, the reason why I started spining vinyl and really the start of my musical career on a serious level.
Life was born on a rainy September afternoon during my dash from my Crim 205 lecture to the AQ where I had a Poli Sci discussion group - I noticed there was a radio station and having just returned from living in Europe I decided that maybe I could do something in radio - I was annoyed at the lack of exposure for the average person to EDM and was so elated to hear how accesible it was in Europe and thought gee I wonder if I could bring a piece of that to Canada....
A show proposal, several demo tries (I had no radio experience and for those who know me I am not blessed with a radio voice - I am more akin to Kermit the frog as one listener felt necessary to call in and tell me) but I love the music.
I didn't spin records, own turntables or even think it would have been possible to be a DJ....All that was about to change. In the beginning the show was completely digital (sorry Kel - but you know what I was doing) me spending over 40 hours a week timing cd's and choosing tracks for a 3 hour show that was slotted form Midnight to 3am on Fridays. I lived in Horseshoe bay at my parents and commuted dragging my shoebox of cd's and my playlists - this was heaven....
I was playing music that I loved and eventhough I didn't even know if anyone was listening it was my zen.
I named the show "Life at 140BPMs" because I read on the inside cover of my Oakenfold (I am a ridiculously huge fan) Cream resident cd that an Oakenfold set starts at 125bpms and ends at 140bpms - I wanted to take over when Oakie finished hence the name.
My friend Lance told me I should really learn how to spin vinyl. I had dreamed of doing it but never really felt it would be possible - his encouragement was the push I needed. The rest you guys know....
I really want anyone who is thinking of taking over the show to take it seriously. I know how Seam feels. I am really torn becuase I did the show for four and a half years and rarely missed a friday. That was a huge commitment. I played live and used vinyl I bought, hauled my monitor and mixer and gazillion records, went through probably $2000.00 in 7-11 penny candy/red bull and had so much fun. BUT I am still burnt out from it and I have had two years off lol....it takes ALOT out of you and there is no calling in sick - THE SHOW MUST GO ON. Yes it is college radio but there are tons of people who are really gung ho and when I moved to Alberta I had the option of shutting the show down completely. I am so lucky to know Sean, someone who is of similar make up as me who has the commitment. dedication and love to carry the torch.
I was thinking of taking it back but have made the decision to play on the 23rd instead and fold. Sometimes you just gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run.
Thank you Sean, I know this wasn't an easy decision for you either.

My last question - what kind of pie should I bring???

XXOO

Mirks

This made this whole thread worth while!!
After reading that.. I though if I was there, I'd take it for sure!!!

Thanks Mirka! and Sean! Even if the show dies.. never let your passion!!

FYI

The show is now dead.

I had some interest, but due to my own time constraints and a personal tragedy of epic purportions, I will not have time to train anyone to take over.

Any new trance show will have to be re-launched.

Truly sorry, but anyone who knows me closely knows that I have had a way worse week than any of you.
