Smoking ..umm..something Drinking laws in America

Can anyone list which states actually have an 18 age-to-drink law and which have a 21.

Cos I was under the impression it was all 21, but apparently quite a few states have the 18 drinking age.

Anyone?

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Apr-04-2002 01:51:

I believe it is 21 and over everywhere here...

Posted by Eugene on Apr-04-2002 02:05:

21 is everywhere in the US. Every single state.

This law was enacted in 1984. Louisiana was the last state that changed from 18 to 21. Now, all the states in the US have the age limit of 21.

Man that's tragic.

A load of 16/17/18 year olds should stage a massive, drunken protest.

That'll teach em

How old do you have to be to join the US Army?

Posted by tranceDJ on Apr-04-2002 02:26:

You have to be 18 to join the army...it's also therefore 18 that you can be drafted, sent to war and die. You can also purchase a gun, go out on your own, and did I mention get sent to war and die, but you can't buy a fucking beer!

I was in Germany like a month ago and the people my age (around 16) are very responsible about drinking. Do you think that if the drinking age in America was lowered to 16 that people would eventually become responsible (I'm sure there would be real problems for a couple of years). I personally think that American teenagers are not very responsible and that it wouldn't work even though it would be nice.

Well it's 18 here, which means most people start clubbing at about 15/16, with limited success getting in places. Everyone is out by 17, with good success. And once you're 18 you've got your ID so it's not a big deal.

I wouldn't say it's really a problem though. When you're 15 most people survive on house-parties, but the more ambitous ones try to get into clubs. I started clubbing when I was just turned 16, which is about average I'd say.

I don't get those 18th birthday cards you see which say stuff like "enjoy your first legal drink". That's crap, cos you can drink from 5 yrs old onwards, so long as it's in your own home, so everyone has drank alcohol legally then anyway.

In Britain it's 16 to join the Army, 17 to join the reserves. You don't get any of the privileges like running over minefields and getting your knackers shot off until you're 18 though.

actually it was Wyoming, and they should have kept that cause then people would actually go there...

but yeah- its everywhere. doesnt make much sense tho i have the added benefit of going to Canada to drink(sarcastic whoopie)! you can generally get booze tho, alt its easier to get drugs here than booze, which isnt really what the politicians are actually going for i think.

we can vote, drive, and go to war - but not drink! yes/

-buy porn/make it (in most states its 18)

we can NOT:
-drink

why doesnt Toronto move closer to Detroit. there wouldnt be any competition, youd just replace Windsor(like Detroit but with less trash) and there would be cool things to do...shucks/

umm:
VOTE? - which gives _YOU_ the possibility of putting the world into ruins (you know that america is the most powerful nation in the world.. tons of nukes)

but no, there is no drinking..

though everybody will tell ya: Just get a fake-id..
what they fail to realize is that getting a fake-id is pretty much the same as printing falscified money.. In my mind, that is a LOT worse than drinking underage.. then again, I am from Germany...

Oh well, I think america has some of the most retarded laws, but there is nothing i can do about it (not a citizen..)

In Holland the drinking age is 16+(that's for beer and other drinks without much alcohol), liquor is 18+ (strong stuff)

I like the drinking age in Holland, the bars don't make a hassle about offering drinks, I think you can get a beer when you are 12 years old over here. I drank my first beer when I was 8 or 9,I got it from my dad.

The problem in the US is that lots of kids want to drink, and now they do it illegaly, and that is all because it is 21+, that is way too old, you can drive when you are 16, but you can't drink a beer because they don't have the responsibility for that. Driving takes much more responsibility then drinking, I can tell you that

They should lower the age to 18+ at first, or maybe 19+ or 20+ and lower that in a reasonable amount of time

I was in the US in 1994 when I just turned 18 and we couldn`t drink or go clubbing so we went to some private parties with some american friends of ours. The strange thing was, that everyone was leaving as soon as there was no more alcohol. Once we just arrived at a party and someone said "No more beer, guys!" and our american friends said: "Let`s leave.". So we actually went to a party and left before we really entered because there was no beer....very strange...

Posted by LightForce on Apr-04-2002 13:44:

Well about that drinking stuff over there, I can't really live like that . And as the same as blik here in the Netherlands its to easy to get a drink. In some clubs and bars you see 12 year old boys and girls drinking beer, and the latest stuff they drink is the breezer shit.

But our country is not weird with alcohol, lets take the soft-drug rule over here. Its fuckin legal (thats nice to me)! But the danger of it, that the younger people can get it 2. And thats not nice to see, that younger people getting high at the age of 14 , 15.

Posted by Eugene on Apr-04-2002 14:13:

The way I look at it, the American citizens here can petition their government. Why not? If there's a public outcry, they'll change the laws. All they need is a little "push" to change the legislation.

Remember that Jefferson quote that Trance-X posted? "Those who are willing to sacrifice freedom in order to gain security, will not have, nor do they deserve, either one."

I think this can be a powerful argument

The thing which i find most amusing is:

You're considered to an ADULT, but you can't DRINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuck me!! But you can drive a car, which is a far more responsible thing to do than go out and drink, when you think cars can be lethal weaponds driven by the wrong person.

Hehe, in the UK, when you go out UNDER AGE, it's like 15,16, 17, In the US it mus be like 18,19,20, we're fuckin ANIMALS by then!!

Posted by Eugene on Apr-04-2002 14:57:

By the way, I should mention that the "21-only" law in America is a common misconception.

The law says that you can't BUY alcohol if you're under 21. As for consuming alcohol, according to the law, you CAN drink, if you're under 21, in the following situations:
- at "a private club or establishment"
- in the presence of a parent in the immediate home
- during religious ceremonies.

Trust me, I did a lot of research on this
The law is pretty strict but not as strict as everybody here seems to think, at least in my state (Maryland).

norway...

@ 16 years
- you are allowed to have sex legally with persons from 16 years ++

@ 18 years
- you will be called into the army if you are boy
- you are allowed to buy beer (and other types of alcohol except liquor (12%+++)
- you are alloed to buy cigaretts (and other tobacco products)
- you are allowed to enter clubs which only sell beer
- you can get the drivers lisence
- you are allowed to go to mostly all kind of partys/arrangemets - as they always sell beer, and therefor the age limit is 18

@ 20 years
- you are allowed to buy liquor
- you can get the drivers lisence for bikes (yamahaa stuff etc, heavy weigthers as we call them here)
- you are allowed to enter clubs which sell liquor
- you are allowed to enter partys/arrangements which sell liquor

that's all i can think of atm

so as you can see, norway is pretty lame
but even though the restrictions are f00ked, all ppl start to drink at the age of 12-14 and start to go out on clubs with fake id-s at the age og 16-17.
i think there are only 2 countries (denmark & finland) in europe where ppl ,within the age of 12-20 years or something like that, are drinking more alcohol than us.

and at last, i will say that its f*cking expensive here..
4-5 for beer when you go out on clubs
5-6 for a 20-pack of cigaretts

blah
norway suxx on prices

greetz!

Verminator, do they show nudity on public TV in Scandinavia?

Here in the US, this is strictly prohibited (although cable channels, which you have to pay for, DO show nudity sometimes.)

Also, how about magazines, newspapers, or journals?

In the USA everything is censored!!!!

You only have to be 5 in the UK to do those things.

Yeah but I knew kids who regularly smoked dope when I was 9/10 years old, and it's illegal here.

The problem with making Cannabis illegal is that you create a "mystique". People (mostly kids) suddenly become fascinated in it because it's illegal. Also, when you're that age, it makes it seem more "cool" if there's a chance of getting caught for doing it.

The disadvantage of legalising it is that people have been told for decades that this drug is evil, which the government now admits is mostly bollocks. That weakens the governments argument when they try to educate people about drugs that are harmful like Cocaine. Peopple just say "well that's what you said about cannabis, and then you said that was OK". This creates a major problem.

It's a difficult one...

Posted by G K Murray on Apr-04-2002 17:13:

MM, the pros and cons a legalising CANABIS.

If canabis was made legal then this would act as a 'Stepping Stone' for the young and week minded. I.E ppl would go on to take HARDER DRUGS.

Canabis is a MEDICINE, simple as that!!! Prooved for years!!

Posted by klaarwater on Apr-04-2002 19:14:

I think the date for drinking in the states is cause Americans are such jerks when sober - let alone when they get all rowdy from boozin! LOL - just kidding - who actually know why the 21 age is there.
