Top DJ's Purchase Music?

You think all the top rated DJ's still buy tunes, or just get everything sent to them for free via promos/record pools?

It's hard for me to imagine them searching beatport...

Ultimately, the top jocks do get sent a lot of music. I would say about 80% of what they play out now, was music that was sent to them by various producers and labels. I think Beatport is more designed for your average DJs and listeners, rather than for the top DJs. Although I am sure that ones that don't get sent to them, they will download from Beatport, and play it out. Afterall, there is a lot of lesser known producers and labels on Beatport who do have some decent releases.

most will get promos, although still enjoy the fun of digging for tunes

they get sent a ton of stuff, but they still dig through beatport.

Part of the duties of being a top-jock is breaking out new tracks. While it may be on the agenda of all, I think that playing tracks that are unique to their sets is also one of those duties. This means searching for tracks in the most unusual places. I have a friend who put up his track on his MySpace account and got hit up by a bigger name dj to play it. This in turn, led to him doing a licensed remix for another track that got a decent amount of air time.With this being said, I'm sure it's not above some of the big namer's to search Beatport or any other music purchase service for new music. Sure, they get alot of free music but any smart producer would hit up more than one dj to play their tracks. So it's likely that the music has made it's way to a great many dj's.

I'd believe many big name DJs, especially those who travel/tour alot or are otherwise extremely busy, apart from getting promos and other freebies have people to look music for them and then the DJs just pick the best out of the music chosen for them.

I've talked with many and seen many interviews where various DJs have said they don't have that much time to go out for a record shopping spree or browse online stores so they have people to pick up a bunch of records for them and then they just grab up the best ones out of the lot. Dunno how much that is supposed to speed up the "process" tho..

Believe me, it's a lot more fun finding stuff on your own. C'mon, don't be lazy! If you have time to post a thread and wait for people to give you recommendations, you have time to browse around TA's DJ Promotion area for sets, CD previews, MP3 sites etc. Do some reading, and some listening, and you'll find stuff.

then we've talked to different people. Perhaps it's a genre difference. To me, that just wreaks of sloth & phoniness.

Who knows how much truth there actually is about that but still it seems to happen in various genres, no matter how "wrong" it sounds for a DJ's way of getting new music. There are too many "phony" DJs out there anyway who just do it for the fame, money and nothing else. Not that i would actually know of any.

well, the reason I'm skeptical of it, besides the fact that it detracts from half the purpose of the DJ (finding music), and that I've talked to others who enjoy finding new stuff all the time, is that, just from a logistical standpoint, that's an aweful lot of work to pawn off to somebody else. I mean, sorting through music is no easy task (hell, I'm on about hour 3 of it today ), and I can't really imagine somebody paying someone else to look through music for them, when it might turn out to be stuff they don't necessarily like, anyways.

A good sign of a dj who actively seeks out records, is when you find that obscure b-side released in an unheard-of label in 1997, in his latest set.

I see your point and agree 100% as i personally enjoy alot to browse through the endless record racks in stores (as i'm not into digital downloads much), when i have time, will and money to do that. I'd guess that wouldn't be too much different than working for a label and listening through the demos and promos that are being sent in every day. Obviously the "searcher" knows what kind of music the DJ likes and spins so he/she/they know what to look for to narrow down the spectrum. Ok, i'll stop talking about this NOW as i need sleep.

That just means he looks through older, more obscure stuff.

i think i remember an interview with pvd that talked about it and he said that every week he gets sent 100s of demos and promos and they go to the vonyc headquarters... then they make two copies, one goes to the vonyc shop and the other is compiled on a memory stick for pvd to play out.

with a dj like those at the top of the chain who tours almost 7 days a week (including flight time) they probably have no time to spend hours flicking through shops and just wait for the music to come to them. personally id feel a bit empty without having time to go out and look for something new and different, thats half the fun of djing when after hours of digging you find something cool and it goes down well....

i know 2 or 3 DJ's in the top 250 in DJ mag and i know that they download a bit from Beatport and various places like that but they do get a lot sent to them as well

That's why a lot of the bigger DJs spend a great deal of set time playing their own tunes. They don't have to spend as much time figuring out what to play when they can just whore songs that they are trying to sell to us.

You can say with some big names that they are more like "music salesmen" then DJs...

I think both. I've personally seen Talla 2xlc and Kai Tracid get their vinyls at Boy Records in Frankfurt, Germany in several ocassions. Of course, both of the Andys were catering to them when each of them showed up and showing them Boy Records secret stash of vinyls that they haven't released yet. I wouldn't be suprised if they gave Talla and Tracid a discount of some sort.

i don't know of any dj that started with vinyl that doesn't enjoy heading down to the local shop and having a flip through

digging ftw!

it is really satisfying to find a killer track that is underrated and isn't played out much. if u ALWAYS just go with other peoples' recommendations and opinions, you're just copying someone else's style. im not saying don't listen to them but rather, don't always go with what the crowd/ mass says.
