Beginner Dj Equipment

Before someone complains, I have used the search button, and could not find threads specifically dealing with this particular equipment.

I'm in the market for buying some Dj equipment for the first time. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, and would prefer not to go over 600 euros. I want 2 cdj's and a mixer which is good for starters and won't immediately break. I've been browsing around and have found some items:

CDJ's:
Numark Axis 4
Numark Axis 9
Gemini iCDJ

Mixers:
Numark 1002 MKII
Numark DXM 06

Basically what I'd like to know is if they're other Cdj's/mixers in the price range of these which are more valuable than these listed,. Also I'd life to know if you think I should get nicer, more expensive cdj's and a worse, cheaper mixer, or vice versa. Thanks.

Note: I know that they're great, but I simply cannot afford Pio CDj 200's as they retail for 400 each.

Well on average, yeah

Get some software controller like the Hercules DJ Console or look into Traktor and some type of MIDI control interface, until you can afford something that will last. Those CD players aren't going to last you, you'll sell them in a few years. Your best bet is to see if you even enjoy it and if you can get the basics of mixing down, then get those. Better yet, get some inexpensive TTs like Stanton's ST-80s, which go for about $250 each, about the same price or less than those CD players you have listed. So two of those would be $500 (dunno exactly how much in your country) and the mixer would be I am guessing another $250 so $750, and then look into Serato or M-Audio's Torque and you're talking rough $1,000. Other-wise, you can save another $200 or so and get two CDJ 200s and a DJM 400, the perfect set up IMO.

Yikes... Agiprodj.com has CDJ-200's on clearance for $309 USD (235 euros). 400 euros is insane!

I would really look around if you can... it's really worth stepping up one level to better decks. Even if you have to skimp on the mixer for now.

I've messed around on this console and you will get anxious for something better within a few weeks (at least I did).

I know this sounds obvious, but have you tried looking on eBay? I'm in a similiar situation, but I don't have enough money to get started yet. eBay looks like your best shot for your price range.

I never played with it, but I would think for someone who doesn't know how to mix, it would be helpful. More interesting to use with DJ Software than just a mouse, esp if you can't afford CDJs yet.

agiprodj can only ship to usa?!

You could buy m-audio torq, and get a midi controller (like an xsession pro?)

and when you get cd decks, you'd still be able to use it.

Come to the United States and try to smuggle them out . I doubt you'd get far but hey..it's worth a try.

No, I want some actual gear and not a program with midi controller (I only have a desktop anyway). I've used my friends Traktor quite a bit, and while I am no where near close to being able to quickly beat match, I know the basics of fading and cueing and such. With actual gear, I'd be able to immediately start djing at High School events, and the expectations of DJ skill at those isn't high. I am also not looking for gear that is going to last me for many many years down the road, because when I go to college in the states in a little over 2 years, I'd have to sell the gear due to electrical specifications anyway. Basically I'd just like to know the best starting set-up other than CDj 200's and and a DJM 400.

Well, you wouldn't necessarily have to get rid of it when you went to college... Seeing as how I'm in college and desparately trying to get my own set up as well, I know that it's possible to have everything in your dorm room. The question really is whether or not you want the equipment in your dorm, or to wait to transfer it to an apartment when you move out of the dorm.

Dorm life can get crazy at times, and your shit could get stolen or broken with room parties, not to mention the problems practicing might cause with your hallmates.

On the set up side, since you're not looking for the cdj 200 route, you might want to look at the denon s1000's or stanton c.314's as those both tend to be a little cheaper to find - at least, from what I can tell. You can find 2 cdj's plus a mixer and sometimes a case for as little as 500$ on eBay with minimal use. The denon's usually run about 650 - 850 for 2 cdjs and a mixer, and the stanton's from 500 - 700.

I've been warned not to get the c314's, but I haven't been told why. If someone could help out with the reasoning, that'd be solid.

Nono space isn't the problem. I live in Belgium, and over here they use different electrical sockets than in the US, that's why i'd have to sell the equipment.

Posted by Boinked on Mar-09-2007 09:13:

Would adapter's work?

Posted by Ryan0751 on Mar-09-2007 11:30:

Some decks/mixers are dual-voltage as well. I know the CDJ-1000's are, you just need different power cables.

Yes, I'm sure I could get around it with multiple transformers, but that's not what I'm asking. Regardless of what power cables they come with, I'd just like some suggestions for inexpensive CDj's and mixers, besides the Pioneer route.

Posted by Ryan0751 on Mar-09-2007 15:48:

Then why'd you say you'd have to sell them if you move?

We gave you other suggestions, and you don't like the answers we gave you:

1. Pioneer CDJ-200
2. Denon DN-S1000
3. Stanton 304

If you want to go cheaper (since those all run in the same price range), you to buy used or you are going to get crap decks that you can't learn on.

Maybe you should look for an older Denon dual CD unit, which you can pick up for $300-400 (and you get two decks in one). They are reliable, still found in many clubs, and will give you something to learn with.

Yeah, I know those suggestions, I was just hoping they're be some cdj's cheaper than those that are still good . Anyway thanks for the input, but do you have any suggestions for mixers (other than djm-400)? I'm guessing that the situation is similar to the cdj's, but feel free to surprise me

Posted by Ryan0751 on Mar-09-2007 22:33:

Well with mixers you have a bit more leeway, as they don't tend to affect your mixing quite as much as the quality of the decks. Plus it's usually cheaper to upgrade your mixer than your decks.

What about something like the Ecler Nuo-2? It goes for around $350 here in the US (might be cheaper there since they are a Spanish company). They are small, simple, and well built.

Or the Denon DN-X100?

Even cheaper would be something from the Numark series.

Found 2 Cdj 200's in good condition for 350 euros each on ebay.be. Gonna try and go for 'em.
