My problem with school/homework/teachers

What I don't get is why teachers feed you all this stuff about how they dont want to fail you, they just want what's best for you and want you to learn the information and stuff. So many things are false about that because I work better with music, but teachers usually don't let me wear my head phones during class. So many people work so much better with music, but they don't let us have it so they are just lieing to us about wanting us to do well. Also, I have a good memory and I don't need to do 2 hours of homework a night to "reinforce" what I learned. Teachers say stuff like homework is supposed to help you, but all it's done in the past is kill my grade. I just think there's alot of crap in the school system.
How do all of you feel about this kind of stuff?

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Mar-09-2007 03:31:

only people as bright as me should be second-guessing their teacher(s). you cant spell "lying" correctly, so i will hazzard a guess and say you should do as youre told.

Posted by Lira on Mar-09-2007 03:34:

The first thing I did when I became a teacher was telling my students that homework was their problem. I hated that as a kid because not only I didn't feel much of a difference, I had to do homework of the stuff I didn't like, so I couldn't focus on the stuff I was actually interested.

I've never seen a student of mine failing because they had not done their homework. Well, except for one kid who was really problematic, but he had more angst in him than all grunge music combined ever will

Stop trying to pick fights kid. I'm actually smart I just dont seem it. I usually don't do forums so yeah, I'm not used to spelling things the right way. Lol, I think its pretty amazing i can even type normally because I'm used to AIM and online games and what not.
I'm not second guessing all the teachers by the way, I'm just saying the school system is kind of being hypocritical.

Lol, you seem like a good teacher then. And I don't know why but I just have a problem with homework. I can do just fine on alot of tests without homework, but yeah it's what kills my grade. I still kind of do cause problems in school though lol. I guess you can call it kind of a class clown thing. Atleast I'm not as bad as before

They're just setting you up to deal with all the other disappointments that life will bring, no worries.

Posted by shaw on Mar-09-2007 03:41:

clearly you're still in high school, because you don't yet understand that the reason for homework, often times, isn't so much so that you can learn everything (though some people might need it in order to do so), but because there will come a point in your education at which you will HAVE to study, no matter how smart you are, and if you've never been forced to do it before in your life, you will fail miserably (I never had to study for anything, including SATs, until I got to college & it slapped me upside the head like a mofo).

As for listening to music, that's just plain dumb--especially since, as I'm guessing you're male, men have a terrible time listening to two things at once. We tune out one completely. They won't let you listen to music because they don't know when you're listening to what they're saying, and don't feel like repeating themselves. No one does anything better while listening to music. You might enjoy it more, but you won't do it more efficiently or well. Get over the pointless rebellion & move on.

im not a kid and youre right, you certainly don't seem very smart.

hypocritical? how? by making you study and reinforce what youre meant to be learning? by not allowing you to work with headphones on just coz you say so? if i thought playing with my dick in class made me learn better should i be able to do it?

grow the fuck up and do what you're told, or you'll end up fulltime at mcdonalds like poor old A_M_8.

Posted by shiny one on Mar-09-2007 03:43:

Well, that might be true. I think part of the reason it kind of gets to me alot is because I live in an area where alot of peoples parents get really obsessive about school. I think parents put way too much pressure on their kids to do really well in school. Instead of try your best it's ok if you mess up, it's more of you better do it all right or you're dead. So many of my friends can't do much because their parents are such jerks about school. It's not so much me hating it, but it's me hating the impact it has on my friends and others.

Lol, let's not start a big flame war here. I'm new here and I like this forum so please don't ruin it. By the way, I'm not gonna work at mcdonalds, and even if I did, it wouldn't be the end of the world. I've met homeless people or really poor people who are alot happyer then the people making a million a year. By the way, you grow the fuck up and stop trying to start fights with people over the internet.

Lol, America has alot of problems of its own and you're right, it can help you deal with probably and hopefully less annoying things later on in life.

Heh, the reason why I never really bothered to take an English course is because I once failed one semester for not having done enough homework... even though my average grade was 95/100

Lol, I failed some classes in 8th grade, and afew too many in 9th because of how I was with homework. I'm even feeling a bit iffy about college because I've heard how much work you get in there.
I wish I could do more picking and choosing what I take, because when I grow up I want to do something with computers. So many things like history, there is no way I'd use there. I don't see why I even have to learn world history and all that stuff.

i dont think i did homework in highschool... my grades reflected it though :s...

Lol. I didn't do much homework for alot of middle school or the first year of high school and yeah, my grades reflected it aswell. One of my friends dad is an award winning teacher, and in one of his more recent books that he wrote, he actually encoraged teachers not to penalize kids for not doing homework. I make strait A's now, but that's probably only because I don't get much homework and I can do alot of it in class.

Actually, I'm really good at multi tasking. I never said I didn't have to study, but I don't think many people need to do as much homewrok as some teachers give.

Well, I think this is just my personality, but I don't really like sitting still for long if I'm not doing anything fun, like taking a test of listening to something a teacher is saying. I can sit still for alot longer if I'm listening to music or something and it helps me stay concentrated, so it kind of keeps me on task and I work better that way.

but its a school, they have to tailor it for it to be effective to everyone, not just 1 person.
