Matthew Dear - deserter [Ghostly international]

Matthew Dear "Deserter" (10"/digital) available 8 May 2007

With his new single, "Deserter", and the forthcoming Asa Breed LP, Dear works again under his birthname to bring his atmospheric production to the music that he first started producing, vocal pop. "Deserter" is an elegant marriage of effects and melody, including his best lyricism to date. Its blue dawn music, submerged in a warm gauze of synths and hum, deftly anchored by a relentless backbeat. The exclusive You Know What I Would Do hits the dance vibe that Dear is known for with a Prince-esque minimalism and funk, while the flip side hosts Four Tet's dreamy reinterpretation of Deserter, owing as much to classic Detroit techno as it does to Balearic Island classics.

I love his use of vocals, that was one of the big attractions to leave luck to heaven for me. some great vocals on there, much like the one on this track.

The album will be brilliant I reckon.

Brilliance. I really like the vocal usage. It sounds like Postal Service meets Death Cab For Cutie. Melodic Popno?

"Asa Breed" will not be beaten for album of the year for me this year.

Absolutely brilliant, and the Four Tet remixes of "Deserter" that were spawned are absolutely unbelievable.

Highly recommended.

Posted by shaw on Aug-09-2007 21:48:

The Four Tet Remix is a better remix than it is a track imo...if that makes sense.

Yeah but he's not playing with the band in Chicago - so I don't know what to make of that.

We get Superpitcher here once every couple of months.

The band in the "big hands" project is not Mobius Band , they are simply artist on that label that are also touring with him.
