so, what do you think i should do...?

Dilemma @ work:

Okay, I've been assistant manager at this gasoline station, and I'm pretty tired of working there; the pay is really shit (well shit for all the crap i do), the neighborhood surrounding the place is basically a ghetto area (no need to explain), and so on.

Right, so like, i went today to work and I told my boss I was already going to leave the place in search of another place to work at, so, I'd be out of there in two weeks tops.

Then, she blurts out to me that she's pregnant and that she would need me there to take over while she was on leave.... and I was like... dammit.

So, basically, she explained to me that the place would go to shite if i left because all the other employees suck--at doing the management stuff (reports, invoices, inventory, etc.)

And now, I dont know what to do 1) quit 2) stay, help out while she's out.

if you think she was nice and fair to you while you worked there... and u built a friendship (doesnt have to be a "out of work" friendship)... i say do it.

but if you really dont care about her and hate the job. leave.

Posted by lcid on Mar-14-2007 21:00:

tell her that you'll need a pay raise if she expects you to stay there and handle all the responsibilites while she's away.

Posted by wizniz on Mar-14-2007 21:00:

or take nachoes option #2 except stay and ask to pay more

yeah, she was nice.... and we did build a friendship and so on, and I actually started feeling kind of sad of leaving because i got attached to the place and other employees...

but, i REALLY despise being there, now

If you want to leave, leave. There is nothing worse than working a job you don't like accompanied with a shit pay for your lifestyle. Just because she get knocked up it's shouldn't be your responsibility to keep the place in tiptop shape.

maybe its worth helping her out then.. if she was nice and u build a profesional friendship...

if u want to go the way the others are saying.. add lucids idea to mine.

stay but tell her u were leaving cause u need a payraise.. get it and stay and help her out. tell her u need the money for bills and that , that was the reason u were leaving.

hmmm. it never occured to me to ask for a raise... interesting

Posted by Zoso on Mar-14-2007 21:03:

It's a gas station. It will go on without you. Unless you are/feel obligated to this person, go. Not much is worse than being miserable at work.

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Mar-14-2007 21:05:

i think you should sit down with her and work this out because in the end you're going to want to leave but you are doing this as a favor to her in respect for the friendship you two have.

ask for a pay raise, then set a time line, and agree on it. for all you know she may say ok to the pay raise, then be out on maternity leave for like 9 months.

cover your bases and you should be fine, atleast it'll allow you some lead time to start looking for another job all while making extra money at the gas station

do a bit of google searching for pay raise letters. get some basic ideas from those about what you could say in your own letter... then write one up and submit it to her. even if your job isn't the most formal/professional position in the universe, submitting a well-written letter shows that you're serious and driven.

with all those pregnant hormones raging through her, it'll be hard for her to say no.

Demand all-you-can-drink fountain Cokes and all-you-can-eat of those hotdogs on the rollers for the rest of your life.

If she says no, change hotdogs to microwavable burritos as a counter-offer.

How long is maternity leave? 6 months? A year?|

If you were to stay that much longer you could potentially be setting yourself up to be stuck there beyond that time. She'll like what you did while she was gone, or she likes you over and will want you to stay even when she's back and you might still feel obligated to stay even though you don't want to.

It happens to a lot of people, and I've seen it happen at my work. So I'd be very careful with this decision.

her baby isn't your responsibility. but like someone said, if u guys have always been cool and she has always treated you with respect and stuff, then i dunno...i guess maybe see if she'll take the raise bait and maybe you can make some more money?

i dunno though, i could never stay at a work place i was miserable at. too many other jobs out there.

Posted by jdat on Mar-14-2007 22:38:

kind of odd that you are saying you'll be gone in two weeks in search of another job.

Don't quit till you have something lined up elsewhere

1. Pay Raise
2. Agree to help for a couple months or whatever you are cool with
3. Kidnap baby, ask for ransom, get the money, quit.

Bingo

Thing is, I was already applying like crazy. See, this is my first job... I kind of just wanted to get the experience. I really had no idea I was going to be asst. manager after only two months.

my advice: write to doctor phil and ask him why youre completely incapable of managing your own affairs and rely on internet aliases to plan your life out for you.
