Smiley DJ Eddie Halliwell @ SXSW: The Good, The Bad, and The UGLY

Well I just want to rant and rave a bit about the Eddie Halliwell show last night at Club Spin!

First the bad....

I was really upset and disappointed at the opening DJ's. No offense to you guys, however, the music chased people out of the club rather than kept people dancing. I began to get a headache from the garbage they were playing. It was very apparent that everyone was bored and anxious to see Eddie play. Now, considering that Club Spin put Eddie on soooooo late in the evening, you would think that they would allow him to play a bit further - but no - they cut off the music in the middle of his set and didn't even let him finish his last song OR do an encore. Eddie wanted to play one last song for the crowd, however all you could hear was the bouncers complaining how they had to be at work in 2 hours and everyone needed to leave. It was VERY disappointing, especially for someone like me who came from out of town to see the show. Can you image, being completely bored the whole night, for the main show to be cut off??!! Then, to rush everyone out, only letting 2 people grab pics w/ him and a few people getting a last minute autograph (even though he was more than willing to stay and do a meet & greet). Club Spin is so lame! I only ask that if Club Spin wants to promote a big name DJ, that they at least learn not to waste people's time and allow the performer that sold the tickets to complete his set, instead of cutting him off early and spending the whole night with the opening acts.

Now for the Good...

Considering how half the crowd was gone by the time Eddie took over the booth, he put on a KICK ASS show. And because half of the crowd was run off by the previous DJ, I had plenty of room to shake my booty and was able to snap some good footage of Eddie from just few feet away. At the end, as we were being forced to leave, I was able to sneak past a crappy CS bouncer and I got an autograph from the legend himself (i geeked out)!!!

I recorded a few great videos, as i was right next to the DJ booth the whole night. You can check em out at:

So my final review on the night: two thumbs DOWN for Club Spin & two thumbs UP for Eddie Halliwell!!!!

the only way I can tolerate this type of music is if I were on fuckin Crystal Meth or some other crazy drug. rofl

No offense, but this crap would make me walk away from any club, any time!

Eddie sucks. I heard they were playing some good music before he went on.

That sucks.

Really? And thats why when the opening acts were on everyone was standing around or walking out. The general consensus of the peeps I talked to that were not run off, all said the opening act were lame, and if Eddie wasn't such a kick ass DJ, then they would have split like everyone else.

Posted by Zild on Mar-16-2007 15:16:

I'm just saying what I heard from the people I talked to who were at the show.

he is not. And im pissed at the BBC for firing Fergie who is hands down a much better dj than this Halliwell kid.

The opening acts : king britt, greenskeepers and tall dave? needless to say more.

no wonder people didn't like it. It's not exactly like King Britt & Halliwell are on the same wavelength.

yeah...that's what made me decide to stay here instead. I was curious, but that sufficiently satisfied my curiosity.

The way things seem to have gone down last night still shouldn't have happened, though.

i was disappointed as well. Eddie did amazing and was actually hyping the crowd a lot which was a bit different from the recent dj's playing at Sky. Hopefully tomorrow they wont just cut off Digweed, being that he's the "big name" he is.

To me Eddie is gimmicky with his cheap tricks, but last time Digweed played, they let him go until just a hair after 3:00am.

Bold statement.

I did turntablism for years before I learned to even beatmatch, so to me they're cheap tricks.

It doesn't take skill to evaluate it--much less achievement.

that aside, I just don't like the music he plays, and, from what I can tell, the way in which he plays it.

*just wait*

Well, I think A&F is terrible, it's too preppy for me. That doesn't mean that people aren't working hard to come up with t-shirts and such. However, in my opinion, their effort could be useful somewhere else.

Just like music, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think Eddie plays too loud for my taste. That doesn't mean he doesn't work hard or anythin'. It just means his music is shit to me, just like A&F.

Just because you wear A&F doesn't make you a fag does it? Well, it's just the same with music.

I could go on with comparisons and the such but I won't. You get the idea.

I'm sure the people that left didn't understand the music or respect the DJs and were there because it was T3h Pl4c3 2 B3...

I take it back, everyone deserves respect. Even though to me it sounds no different than a car alarm. All set and done fellow TA's.
