Arrow REVIEW: Steve Lawler @ This is London - March 16, 07

Hey got there at about 10ish, the venue filled up fast, it's my first time there so I was lost washrooms on different floors, stairs going up and down, etc.

Anyways the guy who opened up for Lawler did an amazing set, but people were really pushy and there was a lot of BO too

Lawler laid down some sick beats, but I left at three cause my friends were tired.

Hope all of you had fun!

WOW.....amazing night...6am and I barely got home, that ride was treacherous in a rear wheel drive car. happy to be alive. must sleep. more later.

Well now that im a little rested i feel like posting a PROPER review (not that i do this very often but last night really deserved it). My friend Above'N'Beyond and our friend stein a non TA started the night really early. Getting totally smashed at my friends residence while pumping our selfs up with Lawler sets ease us into the night. This was my first time going to TIL. We got there really early around 11'sh and made it inside fairly quickly. My first impressions of the club: WOW. Really nice intimate venue. I like the way the balcony area overlooks the dancefloor and you have a clear view of the dj @ work. Also the whole dim lighting with candle's on the tables made it a cosy environment.

When we got in the main floor was empty everyone was either upstairs or standing around the perimeter of the room just looking cool. At the this point the three us took to an empty dancefloor. *Note to self* Dancing with an audience can only be done when ur smashed! Lawler came on @ around 1:30 and tore it up. Dark, dirty, filthy beats, the kind that makes ur body tingle and a grin from ear to ear. He was much better than last time i saw him in NYC. We spent some time upstairs at which point i ran into some familiar face. It was good see'n you Nada, Ali, Spitty,Cuzo, Endlesswave, Chinaman, and others. We left at around 5am. The ride home was BRUTAL and would have been better if we remembered where we stashed our nug. Some skunk must have had a good night.

All in all great night out with some great company. Nights like these can keep me going for another month.

See you all @ AVB!!

Thumbs up WOW! HAUS MUSIK FTW

Haven't had a vintage fayraree review for a while...but things have changed.

I will never miss a Lawler event in Toronto again. Extremely impressive. Review as follows:

I was kinda happy the Booka event got cancelled because I really needed some sleep after finishing late at work. Took a nap from 8 pm - 1 am (overslept an hour) and got to the club at 2 am, fully energized and nourished (lol had an extra serving of dinner before sleeping please don't kill me Lindsay! ) The only regret I have is not being at the club for say, 12 am, because I only got 3.5 hours of Lawler

When I left home at 1:30 am the roads were chaos. I was so happy I made it down in one piece. Swamper, Preludes aren't that bad in the winter, are they!

Show up and right away find out that the bottle I had ordered did not go through because my credit card was rejected. WTF!!!!?!? I wanted to celebrate my bday and promotion by buying shots for everyone and it friggin got rejected. Later, the guy showed me the number he wrote down over the phone and he got it wrong. I don't know why he didn't call me back to tell me there was a problem as I left him my number. A bit unprofessional, but oh well, glad I didn't advertise that to anyone otherwise I would have been even more embarassed!! Next time...

Okay, so I walk around and say a few hellos but the vibe was totally different at this event. Absolutely no PLUR whatsoever. lol and I am a plurwhore so I was beginning to wonder whether I would have any fun without tons of TOTAs surrounding me as I would at every event I attend. However, I gave it a shot...

I basically stood alone for the entire 3.5 hours I was there, just absorbing Lawler's beats. It was me and him, and I shut down everyone else around me (except for 4 people I told to stop smoking in front of me and 1 guy to stop doing lightshows in front of my face LOL I can't believe I actually saw the day...).

I didn't recognize any of the tracks, and that's a good thing, because this night was a complete re-education for me. I really fucking loved the basslines and at some points uplifting synthesizer stuff. Great track selection in my n00b opinion, and I was pumping away the whole time.

I loved my little spot on the floor, right next to a platform where all these sexy girls were dancing (okay so maybe I wasn't completely alone ) and the ventilation was superb! I didn't need a towel at all!! I'm more and more impressed with This Is London each time I go, and I'm going to make this a regular destination going forward, especially if Lawler will be a resident!!!!

All in all, 11/10 in every category.

Note to Lindsay: I must add that I was extremely well hydrated (must have drank about 6-7 bottles of water) and it was an awesome aerobic workout; pulse was up all night long! lol. Thanks again for all your help on my exercise routine! I felt great tonight because of it, and even have some leftover energy to shovel some snow!

Got there around midnight...about 10 minute wait in guestlist lineup...the place was already pretty busy...I liked the opener for Lawler...not bad...a few tracks though that were like wtf? but I just couldn't handle standing front n centre with all the pushiness. These days it's like people's manners have been checked along with their coats. Only stayed til 3 and didn't really care for the first hour of Lawler's set...hubby LOVED it and all of his music...thought it was the best set he ever heard @ TIL so I guess I'll be downloading some live sets for him. I hope he plays @ dragonfly for at least one of his residency nights because I won't be returning to TIL for another one....

the track that he dropped at 3:44 made me feel like my whole body was going to ejaculate my inner organs over the railing upstairs onto the girl that was fox-trotting the moonwalk in front of the sacred Indian head trying to find anything willing to dump one in her.

^^ lol. he lost me at 'fox-trotting the moonwalk'
sounds like a killa night though. glad you guys had fun!

It was cold in the line up, but once inside things were okay.
Opening sets were good. nice beat, few vocals..
Crowd seemed less rammed then previous visits, but after 1AM the dance floor was the usual pushing/shoving.
Steve Lawler hit the decks at 1:30 and his opening track was great.
His set was great to dance to.

Guv > TIL. I can handle Guv most nights, but the crowd at TIL is only tolerable on the 2nd level. Steve Lawler was worth the visit to TIL had a fun time once I accepted the crowd.

Lawler is a sick sick man.....when his opening track is still going at 3:30 in the morning....that is sick.

I expected a jam packed TiL and thats exactly what I got....although the second level had tons of room to dance but the sound just isn't the same up there. I can deal with a packed dancefloor but I am just tired of every person having a camera and having to take pictures every 30 seconds.

The opening set was good and got me warmed up for lawlerization.

My body aches and my legs are burning....I don't think I will be attempting going up the stairs today.

haha that line brings me back to the Spice Girls... Posh says almost that exact same line in Spice Up Your Life, first track on the 2nd album.

My thoughts exactly...Dragonfly would be a perfect venue for a small room dj like lawler

Posted by Ryster on Mar-17-2007 17:37:

So how long did he tear it up on the decks?

LOL so true. What about those hotties we saw? I tried, you know my story lol but the vibe (except for TAs) and STUPIDNESS of a lot of the women there was ridiculous. The music was just KILLER, wow.

Hah, I'll explain, there was the totally cute brunette near that Stone Indian statue thing sitting down w her friend, I tried striking up convo b/c she kept playing with her necklace, I pointed at it, tried to say it was cool etc, but she thought I was pointing at her tits, lol. Meh. Needless to say that was it. Like I said, I doubt next time I will EVER try to talk to a woman at that club (who I don't know or aren't introduced to). I did meet some awesome Portugese people at the bar who were fun as hell to chill with as I was wandering around/getting a drink.
