Question for the "Genre" heads

How do you do it? I LOVE my preferred genres and all but I think completely shutting the door on all others is just insane, or bluntly - idiotic.

Some say rap/hip hop is just people talking about being riches/bitches/drugs but do you really dig deep and see what different artists have to offer? Some of the lyrics can really hit home, the feeling of connection is unbelievably overwhelming.

Same goes for the variety of genres in the scene (DnB,House,HHC etc.). When people tell me they're into trance and trance only it's like what the hell - regradless of the different sounds of tracks and producers don't you get tired of the same overall style?

Sure some styles of music just have general elements that you just can't stand, maybe the BPM or lyrics, but there HAS to be something that catches your ear. There's way too many different artists out there creating quality stuff that shouldn't go to waste because of the "generalization" of a genre.

People move on, ok. That's good! Exploring new things and broadening your mind is excellent, but how can you just completely shun a genre that used to do wonders for your ears? The experienced or "elitest" looking down on the new kids. We all started somewhere, and you should remember where you did too.

Good music is good music. I think some people need to be a bit more open minded. This applies to all people who hate on any genre of music too (the mainstream kids, the hip hoppers, "emo's", the country fans, etc.). Just because it's labled a certain style doesn't mean you should automatically ignore giving it a shot and calling everything in the category shit.

There's just different levels of "liking" I guess. Call me an audiophile. If it touches me, right on. I could care less what backround it comes from.

Yup. There's good and shit tracks in every genre.

Pigeonholing is useless and delimiting.

Blues / Rock is my preferred taste in music, although I'm also a big hard rock, 80s metal, and country music fan.

My one roomate is into emo / indie rock that is popular now, and I can honestly say that after listening to his music for about 3 years I haven't liked a single song.

Im into disco, classic-rock, 80's 90's, "grunge", eurodance, rave, house, trance, electro, techno etc etc..

I've always managed to find tracks that i really love in almost any given genre.

But this what would you call it.. MTV Pop-Rock S***t i've been hearing since, what? 95? NOFX to Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance.

oh, i could NEVER limit myself to one certain genre, that would be too painful. i'm a person who needs to listen to all different sorts of genres and take of it what i can.

in edm, i listen to ALL types: house, tribal, techno, electronica, d&b, idm. i will admit i even listen to some of the stuff elitists will hate (i will not discriminate my beloved edm...except for 99.2% of dj sammy type of poppy edm...most of the time those tracks grate on my nerves)

in rock, i find plenty of artists i like in each genre(i even find some tracks i like with emo, i will admit). these rock bands range in bands from radiohead and alice in chains to mtv type stuff like coheed and cambria and emo such as mineral, further seems forever, etc.

i'm not a country person at all but i still managed to find about 4 or 5 tracks i can listen to.

i listen to classical and meditation strange stuff: sergei rachmaninov (excellent pianist) to be exact and as for the meditation, atmospheric suff, i listen to sounds of nature (listening to streams for crying out loud, rofl)

i don't listen to a lot of rap, but i have tracks that range from crunk music to official hip hop.


i don't know if this is because i am a music person and i compose music. i just like to explore diffrent artists and genres. if you were to look at my music folder, you would think that it was a music store because the ranges are so drastic. i don't think this topic was aimed at me because you said "Genre head" but i figured i'd add my 1.02$.

Most forms of music contain a bit of crap though and I guess first impressions are sometimes lasting in people who don't have time to pick through the dross to find the good bits in there.
I don't have any qualms about saying that the majority of metal, country music, rap and hip hop, house really don't interest me at all, I'll give anything a spin once though.
It'll either click or it won't with me straight up, repeated exposure to a certain song won't make me like it any more than the first time I hear it.

First loves I guess where the gothic rock era between 1978-early 90's, first and second waves of the industrial genre, EBM between about 1980-present to the futurepop era, some guitar rock like The Cult, Ramones and Nirvana with a bit of a punk edge to it, trance from the mid 1990's to present with mostly a preference toward the Psy/Goa, techno preferences in the hardcore/gabba and a bit of the D&B, Jungle scene with a couple of preferred artists there.

I was just thinking about this the other day actually, I don't understand people who claim they only listen to a certain sub genre, or a certain genre, or whatever. I'd go insane after a week or two. EDM wise I try to keep my tastes fairly diverse, though it's still a genre I have a huge amount of exploring to do in. Metal is my other love as far as music goes, and even there my tastes are pretty diverse (deep and dark black metal directly from norway to cheesy power metal, gothic/folk/death/heavy/symphonic and everything in between).

What really makes me wonder though, is how DJ's do it. I mean they must get sick of spinning the same shit every night, but if they try to expand beyond what they're known for, people trash them to hell and back as sellouts or whatever. Don't psy DJ's get sick of playing nothing but psy, or the same for electro, or uplifting, or hardcore, or whatever. I mean I understand that there's a certain amount of room to move around within the confines of what you're expected to play, but still. Most genres start to blur together for me if I listen to them for more than a few hours (some even faster, DNB particuarly).

Well, they probably listen to music of some other style in their free time, so that 2-3 hours a night of (let's say) epic trance is not a big deal to them. I mean, I don't like epic trance also, but for that money...
