OHIP - Knee Surgery

Would it cover something like osteotomy wedge implant?
(A "Wedge" is a resorbable implant that can be inserted in the upper tibia to correct malalignment of the knee)

The surgery would reduce the amount of swelling under the knee cap, minimize the need for custom orthotics, etc.

Most likely. As this would be a corrective/preventative measure to rectify a potentially chronic issue that may affect quality of life and lead to ongoing treatment, I would think so. Don't expect to be first in line for a surgeon, but it should be covered.

i studied some of this in my canadian health care system course last term and really what it comes down to is if its "medically necessary" or not. it won't cover all surgeries obviously, for example: should ohip pay for cosmetic surgery such as face lifts, or breast implants or tatoo removal? definately not

but ya you're going to have to go through your specialist to see if it's medically necessary or not. I'm gonna say you're not gonna get covered but then again I don't know you're the full story here....and im not saying you're surgery is placed under the "cosmetic" surgery category, chances are - if you can live with it and do day to day activities still (even with some pain) you won't get coverage...but like stated above if it does pose a threat for chronic illness in the future you do have a good chance at getting coverage

let us know how this works out though im interested to hear more

Edit: i thought about it again, i did have an osteocondroma in my left knee and had it removed and it WAS covered under this one section of OHIP so you do have a chance, i gotta look more into it

I had an MRI and scope done within 2 weeks this past summer.

I'm not in that big of a rush, but the sooner its done, the better. It has been getting a lot worse over the years and will only continue to get worse.
