Mix It Your Damn Self 1 Specifics

In case you missed the initial thread, the idea is to have some number of set tracks that people can use to make a 30-minute mix. Best one wins. So, we need a genre to choose tracks from, and a source for the tracks. For the next ones, both the genre and the track source will probably change (though I could see sticking with original stuff from TA if it really worked well), but we need a place to start.

So, it's simple.

Pick a broad genre:
House
Trance
Techno

Whichever one people want first can just serve as an big umbrella to all the little genres stuff might fall into, but for now, pick one.

Also, pick a source for the tracks:
TA Producers
Everyone else

Here's the original thread...since it's so far away from this one:

trance or techno...

but probably trance, since im pickier with techno.

Posted by shaw on Mar-20-2007 23:55:

and what about producers?

Posted by Acid John on Mar-21-2007 00:01:

oh yeah.

my vote for producers goes to everyone else. unless TAs wanna press their tracks to vinyl and send em to me.....

and as far as acquiring vinyl goes, id be down to buy a few tracks. my birthdays coming up, and ive been long overdue to get new vinyl.

Posted by idoru on Mar-21-2007 00:11:

House or Techno. I probably wont do it if it's Trance.

Posted by RJT on Mar-21-2007 00:14:

House or Techno. Only way I'd do it if it were trance is if it were a list of all certified classics, and even then, I'd bore quickly.

Posted by idoru on Mar-21-2007 00:20:

Oh, and I'll go with "everyone else" as a source for the tracks.

Posted by chris harrington on Mar-21-2007 00:34:

I think 4 the first one i would go for everyone else and house/trance

and then the next one do a TA only 1

Posted by Andryuha on Mar-21-2007 00:41:

i vote for "everyone else" and trance. However, I wouldn't mind trying other types of EDM. I'm a newbie and I haven't tried mixing anything besides progressive trance.

drum n bass mashups is where i really shine.

trance kinda gets a bit samey for me, beatmixing wise..its all 4/4 blaah.. im not so technical when it comes down to it, i think im more innovative when it comes down to dnb.

Posted by lawrenceq on Mar-21-2007 02:14:

Electro house or trancey style music is up my alley so im good for that, and producer wise everyone else. I love how this is coming together!

Double Drop?

Unfortunately I only have Technics 1200's to work with so getting the music suggested (Both price and availability) makes this almost impossible for us vinyl DJ's to keep up. I'd love to participate if I have the track selection available however.

Great idea btw!

You vinyl guys are insane. Are you really going to spend $100+ on vinyl so you can compete in a TA contest? You don't win anything and you're stuck with 10 records that you may not have cared for in the first place?

At least the CD guys are only $20 in the hole.

I think its a great idea but its way too complicated.

Here's an idea...

Get 10 FREE tracks from TA producers. 1 abelton, serato or CDJ mix per person. 0 entry cost will bring more DJs to compete. After the votes are tallied have TA host the winning mix on their main page. (Yes I know there is something similar already hosted).

Plab B: Simply have a DJ contest with voting. Every DJ submits a mix of ANY 10 tracks. DJs will be voted on mixing, effects, programming, track selection, creativity, etc on a scale of 1-10. Highest score wins. This way DJs can push their "sound" instead of being forced into one.

You could do one every month to keep the TA DJ community together. Winners get to write "Mar 07 TA DJ of the month" or some shit.

Anyone?

We've done Plan B in the past. What we're looking at is something along the lines of, "Okay, you guys all have the same stuff, now who can be the most creative with it?"

Posted by Acid John on Mar-21-2007 06:10:

well... based on general consensus, mixes will probably be a half hour each. making for 6-7 tracks... we're gonna pick maybe 10 tracks (give or take.. who knows what the final number of acceptable tracks may be)... so pending i can find 6-7 tracks that i like from our list, id have no problem buying a bit of vinyl. (i cant speak for other vinyl buyers though)

also.. even if a track isnt exactly my first choice, i can still look at a track as a tool, to be used to build/drop energy of a set, or change the direction of where things are going...

finally, i need to expand my vinyl collection... im picky about some music, but overall, very open. i trust the opinions of most TAs to pick good music... so i really dont see an issue with much down the line if im gonna like the tracks anyway.

also, if by chance im really not into the current list of music, theres already been talk of different rounds/versions of this contest with different styles. so if push comes to shove, i'll sit one out.

hope everyone agrees...

I vote for Trance and get tracks from everyone else.

Posted by gsfg on Mar-21-2007 09:22:

house
everyone else

Posted by Trance Android on Mar-21-2007 09:34:

Genre: Trance

Source: Everywhere else or ta producers (no big preference either way but would be nice to support the ta boys )

Posted by Storyteller on Mar-21-2007 10:29:

I suggest a bit proggy start...

0 entry cost? What about the price of Ableton then? Or a CDJ?

Edit:
What I mean is that whatever we choose, we're always going to exclude someone. That's why it would probably be for the best to not go with TA producers since that way most people can enter as the selected tracks would be commercially available (whatever the genre may be).

Posted by Dojomaster26 on Mar-21-2007 13:21:

My vote for the first mix:

Genre: Trance
Producers: TA Members

I think this would be a great way to get some exposure out to our fellow TAs. If anyone doesn't mind, I could use my mix as a "demo" to pass out, giving you all even more exposure.

Anythings fine though. It doesn't matter what genre we end up doing. I'm up for the challenge.

I like what you're suggesting, but a DJ should only be limited by a music selection that he chooses, not one that's given to him.

DJ of the month sounds like a great idea, but how are votes going to be tallied? By poll? Submit votes to one volunteer to count? Create a thread for all to post into?

I definitely agree with the zero cost entry fee (who would the money go to? I guess to TA as a donation?). I don't think anyone was going to charge in the first place...

Posted by Omega_Blue on Mar-21-2007 13:42:

house or techno, tracks chosen by everyone. also i think it's important (and probably has already been mentioned) that none of the mixes are heard by anyone else beforehand just to keep everything as original as possible.
