Ghost Smilie Doin a thesis

Hey everyone,
I have just signed up to this site to get some information on trance and techno music. I love it so much that ive decided to do my final year thesis on it. if anyone out there can give me more websites to look up or books that give me definitions of trance and techno music it would b excellent. I always get these mixed up adn even musical examples of the difference between these genres would also help loads.
Cheers

honestly, why would you base your academic thesis, the crux of your academic career, on something you don't know the first thing about?

Posted by heyheyhey on Mar-21-2007 18:50:

thats not the question in hand here... Its nearly all finished i just want to gather as much info as possible, its something that interests me so why not!its just other peoples opinions on what they think trance and techno are!

Posted by nefardec on Mar-21-2007 18:51:

ok, it's this part that caused me to post what I did:

I don't know I just think you're going to get shitty research on an internet forum

Posted by heyheyhey on Mar-21-2007 18:53:

yes so thats why im open to any other ideas........... can u help me at al!?

Posted by nefardec on Mar-21-2007 18:57:

why don't you look at the marketing aspect of trance music and the sound that actually is on the record/cd and do a comparative study.

trace the discrepancy between marketing and music over the years.

for instance, there were turning somewhere where 'trance' became uncool as descriptors for djs/compilations/labels/tracks, there were points of inflection in the marketing curve where techno began to shift mass meaning, or when meanings diverged, etc. You could even diagram the semantics and the connotative history of words used to market or describe dance music from 1990 to present

it should be easy to talk about marketing and musically look at things like structure, production aesthetic, instruments, length, etc

I'm sure you could reach some kind of important conclusion that way

and i'd like to read it

wel sure i told you ive got it nearly finished but just the fine details left. Ive done it on the history of dance music in general and the major cities involved in promoting it. done other chapters on trance music and techno music and i just need the small details of definitions and can't find ones anywher. mite move on to what your on about. I'l see now in the next few weeks.have to make ouot a sample CD aswel, it wil b tough but il get it done!

I hope that you had somebody else type that thesis for you.

Posted by nefardec on Mar-21-2007 19:06:

right, you could possibly borrow definitions from people like derrick may, kevin saunderson, dr motte, laurent garnier, mark reeder which are found in numerous documentaries.

see the problem is what are you trying to define?

because defining genre is a route to faliure 99% of the time, since genres by their very nature are fluid and change over time.

ask a 16 yearold ASOT fan from minnesota what trance is and you'll get a very different answer than laurent garnier.

Considering this is your thesis, I would probably approach it more seriously.

title it: Tiesto in Concert 2003 "The Rise, Climax, and Fall of Trance in 4 hours" and just give him the DVD

Posted by lacksesepsotygh on Mar-21-2007 20:03:

educate yourself with some youtube videos. watch the documentary pump up the volume for some chicago house history, and then proceed into techno and trance documentaries. high tech soul is one i can recommend for techno.

use wikipedia

also a great place to find links to other sources such as books and articles.

Want to trade thesis topics? I have to write mine on The Engineering of Microelectronic Fabrication.

Actually cannot find a gud title yet, that is my last job..... humiliation could be on the cards but sure il get over it.... any ideas to titles..... Ive discussed the history of electronic dance music and the terms trance and techno.... im beginning to look at the technology used aswell so throw your ideas at me...

I still don't understand how you're doing a thesis on a topic about trance and techno, and you're almost done but don't know the difference between the two? Maybe you're looking at it more from an outsider perspective and not someone who is basically obsessed with the music, which is cool too, I just hope you don't embarrass those who take EDM somewhat seriously. I like the idea how though I'm sure there are some consistent elements of genres over time, the definitions for the genres constantly evolve over time...

[[ LINK REMOVED ]]

It gives a fairly good definition of trance. It doesn't really differentiate between trance and techno, but it's a start.

I think the difference between the two is not something that can be heard from a simple listen-through. It depends more on the way the tracks develop. Techno is more about creative edits and transitions, with a monotonous beat that changes only occasionally. Trance, on the other hand, focuses more on the slow evolution of the beat. Soundwise, the differences tend to be extremely subtle, if they're there at all.

I'm assuming your thesis jury (if you have one) will know little, and care even less about EDM than you do.

Make it up I say... you'll still be in safe ground.
