Thumbs up Above & Beyond @ BED, 3-22-07 review + pics

It's 6:44 in the morning...and I'm still awake to deliver my review of this night.

BED in South Beach on Washington Avenue, despite being a rather small venue, and having a way WAY less than classy exterior, makes up for it with a fancy, loungish interior with a sound system that WON'T leave you terribly deaf unlike some clubs.

A DJ booth set up on the side wall, right in the middle, and not too high at all, giving the crowd a good level of interaction and intimacy with whoever is behind the decks. Large box shaped speakers on both sides of the dance floor, which is pretty spacious in my opinion, for a small venue.

The opening DJ, don't know who he was, started with some kinda slow ass crap, but eventually started to pick it up by throwing in some decent prog/prog trance, but then killed it (in the bad way) a bit by throwing some house crap in the set as well. But, by the time he was finsihing up, he was playing better stuff. He did a good job getting the night started.

And around 12:30 or so, the main event of the evening had begun.

Above and Beyond, from the UK...Paavo and Jono Grant in attendance, started the night off with a lot of prog and a couple of electro-ish tracks. They gradually built their set, and around the halfway mark....

...they unleashed IT.

Full blown trance and semi-hard tunes that had the place going insane. Their crowd interaction was superb, and the crowd LOVED them. Flawless mixing, massive tunes and...

at 4:36 A.M.....it FINALLY happened.

Thanks to Jason (J13) and his cell phone text, we got to hear

Above & Beyond - Far From In Love

I heard the track coming in and went APESHIT. Flipped the FUCK out and was going so insane I actually fell on someone And I wasn't even drunk!

ooops

It was a moment I had been DREAMING of, and I wonder if djstopngo was there...I only met up with 2 TAs: J13 and Wenddy. Many thanks to you and your crew for letting me chill and lounge with you on that bed! Very comfy! I was pretty much lounging the whole night LMFAO, but got up when I heard tunes I loved. Tracks included:

Air For Life
Another You Another Me
Alone Tonight
Cosmic Gate - Element of Life (thanks to J13 for this ID)
Gabriel & Dresden - Dangerous Power (Original mix) (Thanks to J13 again for this ID)
Darren Tate & Jono Grant - Let the light shine in <- FUCK YEAH!!! PURE trance bliss!! SO melodic and classic.
Ferry Corsten - Beautiful (remix) <- forgot who remixed this one
Analog Feel?
Good for Me (? mix)
Daniel Kandi - Child <- I ID'd this one myself heh
No One on Earth (Gabriel & Dresden remix)

End track: REMOVED

Encore: ID

This was an absolutely STUNNING night. I overheard many people after the end of the set say this was the greatest set they had ever heard A&B play, and I have to say I can't argue with that...except that I was waiting for Can't Sleep

Pics to come later today....but GODDAMN. As a TA...as a clubber...as a partygoer....FUCK. If you missed this one, you missed out on something memorable....special. Not to down that Ultralounge party, but I honestly believe there is NO WAY that party with A&B there can compare to this, unless A&B get an extended set, like the one we were most fortunate to have been granted.

Great....FUCKING night.

That is all.

DarkAngel of TRANCE.

yeh man, BED is a great venue, very surprising when you get inside and there appears to be no club lighting installed but as the night goes on the lighting comes on. The club has a magical feel for sure and G&D there last conference is a night that will always remain in my memory as one of the best nights ever

Ha! You managed to catch me on (only) one of those, but it's only from the back, so you're forgiven

I will post the full tracklist later... For now, I have a pool party to go to

Oh, and in case it's not clear from the photos, Jono's shirt read: SCIENTOLOGISTS MAKE BETTER ACTORS! Don't know about Paavo's; it was in Japanese.

Ahh funny how they switch Tony to Jono this time. Looks like Zoltar "The Brother From Another Planet" was there too.

Nice review DA. Wonder if they will broadcast a portion of the set on TATW like they did last year with their Nikki Beach and Nocturnal sets. (1 hour of each).

I REALLY hope so. This set was just so amazing.

Me too because I missed it. I did not even go out because of work, and it would have been a brainbuster deciding between this and Ferry with Edgar (BTW I heard they leveled Cameo)

Sucks you couldn't come man. Everyone I've talked to about this event, I've told them all that is easily one of the greatest sets I have ever heard. I still look back on it and am in shock.

Everything was perfect: the venue, the people, the vibe. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting such a great vibe that night, but was plesantly surprised.

What a memorable night. WOW.

I can see behind your eyes
That you're afraid of who you are
Only silence now between us
I'm amazed we come this far

Far from in love (x2)

Like a fire burned to embers
I know this is where it ends
In the ashes we are dying
Almost strangers only friends

Far from in love (x4)

Far from in love
So far from in love
Far from in love

You know I don't know
How we'd get so far
Far from in love
Far away, from the love we had
yeah yeah

Far from in love
From all the loving that I knew
How I miss your touch
Far from in love

Sailing away from me
Like melting snow in my hand
I miss your touch
Far from in love
Trying to sew up a love that was built on this end.
I miss you so much

OH MY GODDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111

This year's Nikki Beach set wasn't recorded (that is, if James told me the truth ). Too bad because they played the new Super8 & Tab, which is really good!

The BED one was supposed to air live on XM, but I didn't have my car or my computer with me at the time to check I'm pretty sure it was recorded as a result, so it should turn up online any time now

awsome review DA! man if they played anything like they did last night at nikki then shit what a night u had! they tore it up at nikki sick!

Posted by ctt300 on Mar-24-2007 23:59:

Yeah, these guys rock it out pretty damn good and I just hope Armin et al at Twilo tonight kick it out too... Bed is a really nice venue and there were no scum bags like Space has... The only thing is their sound system is really not all that great and I thought and told the cameraman that it definitely was not loud enough.

Tracklist now here

Posted by Moyn on Mar-28-2007 12:38:

this was really a great party! A&B totally killed it, and was working everybody.

on a side note, some freaking kid was sitting off to the side playing his PSP!???? wow he must have been having a blast. what a freakin DORK!!! go home and do that shit

Posted by J13 on Mar-29-2007 06:58:

Yeah I was so glad I could attend this joyous night. Especially with the VIP treatment. We were next to the DJ booth all night and you could not have asked for a better crowd to play to. Jono kept looking at me and laughing when I called out almost every song they played. Some of my highlight tunes were...Super8 & Tab-Needs to Feel(Wippenberg Mix),David West & Andreas Hermanson-Larry Mountains 54, Kenidel Lopez-Heavens Caliber(Thomas Datt Mix), Signalrunners -Aria Epica(Bart Classen Mix), A&B-Alone Tonight&Far From in Love, Daniel Kandi-Child, and def when Cosmic Gate got in the building and A&B dropped Element of Life(the roof came off the club lol). Anyone who missed this show def missed one hell of a night.

Posted by element-y on Mar-29-2007 07:49:

those guys had the best sets in all of WMC. They were true to trance unlike many. I expected cosmic gate and blank and jones to play trance but they too went to the house proggy techno like sounds. Above and Beyond were non stop trance. WOO HOO!

Not quite. The first 30-60 minutes were very progressive. And the last half hour before the last hour was very techy. There were other non-trance moments in between as well, which I pointed out to Jono, who didn't seem to care

I have to agree, but like I said before, using that hour of prog helped to build the set properly, and since it was an extended set, it worked perfectly. I didn't like the proggy crap in the beginning but it worked well.

Posted by element-y on Mar-30-2007 08:40:

Oh really? I didnt make it to this event but i saw them at the apple store and the Nikki Beach party. Maybe because they had a 1 hour set instead of a long one, they didnt bother with a proggy build up like you all are saying in this case. But when they want too, its WOOHOO trance!!! The theme for EDM is straying from trance as much as possible now. Even the DJ's who made it by producing trance are trying to back off - its sad.

Indeed, it's VERY sad

And you make a good point: Like Ferry, A&B always do better with short sets than with long ones (which is the opposite of Tisto and especially Armin). I told this to Jono and he was kind of shocked ("Maybe we're not the right DJ for you" ).

Anyway, I kind of understand the theory behind the progressive buildup and techy ending, but I strongly disagree with it
