III. How College Kids Imagine the United States Government

THE PRESENT DAY

Did you hear the news, Mr. President? The students at the University of Pittsfield are walking out of their classes, in protest over the war.

(spits out coffee) Wha What did you say?

Apparently, students are standing up in the middle of lectures and walking right out of the building.

But students love lectures. If theyre willing to give those up, they must really be serious about this peace thing! How did you hear about this protest?

The White House hears about every protest, no matter how small.

Oh, right, I remember.

You havent heard the half of it, Mr. President. The leader of the group says that if you dont stop the war today theyre going to . . . to . . . Im sorry, I cant say it out loud. Its just too terrifying.

Say it, damn it! Im the President!

All right! If you dont stop the war . . . theyre going to stop going to school for the remainder of the week.

Send the troops home.

But, Mr. President! Shouldnt we talk about this?

Send the troops home.

THE NINETEEN-SIXTIES

Mr. President! Did you hear about Woodstock?

Woo Woodstock? What in Gods name is that?

Apparently, young people hate the war so much theyre willing to participate in a musical sex festival as a protest against it.

Oh, my God. They must really be serious about this whole thing.

Thats not all. Some of them are threatening to join communes: places where they make their own clothing . . . and beat on drums.

Stop the war.

But, Mr. President!

Stop all American wars!

(sighs) Very well, sir. Ill go tell the generals.

Wow. Its a good thing those kids decided to go hear music.

I wouldn't mind another woodstock. And not like the shit one that ended in a riot.

Just a woodstock promoting peace, love and tons of drugs at my fingertips. With trippy guitars and another jimmy hendrix.

I don't think the second and third woodstocks even deserved to have the title of "Three more days of peace and music"...there may have been music but definitely no peace (especially 99).

It was even apparent in 94 though. I like Metallica and all but I don't think they belong at a festival that "associates" itself with peace. Thousands of people chanting "Die! Die! Die!" during 'Creeping Death' doesn't conjure up any vision of peace for me.

I guess you could say that the "spirit" of woodstock is within the many hippie jamband fests that go on around the country (i.e. Bonnaroo). As for another actual woodstock, not likely to happen nor would I want one.

But what are the themes?

WHITE PARTY! YEAH!

Woodstock's theme of peace and love actually meant something.

Digweed and MSTRKRFT's theme of Diamonds meant something too...

There were tons of Anti-War Protesters, as well as Vietnam Vets, promoting peace and love.

And let us not forget:

Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, Santana, Mountain, Janis Joplin, Sly & the Family Stone, Grateful Dead, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jimi Hendrix.

That's not all of them, but yeah, I think you get it. The who played 24 songs, Hendrix played 17. To have all of these legends at one festival, I would have creamed myself if I had the privilege of living during that era. Jimi Hendrix played the fucking star spangled banner.

digweed is a shitshow compared to any of these people.

Opinion

Then let me restate my original post and instead mention Coachella. Pretty Woodstockian if you ask me.

Posted by Frenchie on Mar-24-2007 18:44:
