Armada Night @ Twilo, 3-24-07 review + pics
It's 9:30 in the morning and Twilo is still going, but it's something I wouldn't stay for, to put it mildly. Will get to that in a moment.
Twilo, located where Players Sports Bar once was, was chosen as the site for this year's Armada night, as opposed to that dump Space. Twilo has serious potential. Sick lights, lasers and a good sound system albeit a LOUD one. The whole night I had to stay away from the dance floor and speakers, except for near the end.
Last year, WMC 2006, Armada night @ Space offered 4 DJs for us to listen to.
Matthew "Tooth"
Decay
Armin van Buuren
Markus Schulz
DJ Remy
We all know too well what happened last year, so naturally most of us were a little anxious as to what tonight would deliver.
This time, WMC 2007, the following Armada artists were on the menu:
Matthew "Tooth"
Decay
Armin van Buuren
Markus Schulz
MY PERSONAL favorite DJ/producer, Rank 1
"tooth" Decay review:
Not even worth considering a sentence except this: he actually played more acceptable stuff compared to last year. At least this time I didn't point at him and laugh.
Armin van Buuren...
I have to say that I was def. one of the more anxious people awaiting Armin's set, but, after hearing how he did such a GREAT job at Pawn Shop the night before, and the fact that he wouldn't be playing at that shithole known as Space, I entertained the thought that Armin MIGHT actually do a good job.
Lightning strikes twice.
A three hour set by Armin, and, masterfully crafted and built just like Above & beyond did at BED Thursday night, Armin most defintely made up for the crap set from last year. Everyone I talked agreed that he was ripping it...except for Spacemasters. As I suggested to him before, maybe Armin's set wasn't housey enough for him.
Reality check: Armin became famous for trance, NOT house/prog house/the mindless crap that he played last year much to our ickness. I was very VERY impressed with Armin, although, despite him fucking up at least ONE mix, he still did a nag up job. Partial tracklist includes:
Bedrock - Heaven Scent (? mix)
Joop - The Future (Rank 1 remix)
Dave 202 - Torrent
Kyau & Albert - Megashira
Rank 1 & Alex MORPH - Life Less Ordinary
Cosmic Gate - Analog Feel (Rank 1 remix)
Rank 1 vs. Armin featuring Kush - This World Is Watching Me
And Armin's closing song....
Way Out West - Mindcircus (Gabriel & Dresden mix)
The classic from 2002, and one HELL of a way to finish a great set.
Onto mr. Markus Schulz
The GDJB man put on a set which started banging but I missed a lot of it due to talking with this really NICE Dutch couple.
And of course, talking with Piet Bervoets of Rank FUCKIN 1. What I DID hear of Markus' set though, was good, but I have to admit: I liked Armin's set more. I only was able to ID a few tracks, and got help with one:
Markus Schulz vs. Chakra - I am (Spacemasters ID'd this one)
Marco V - Simulated (Markus Schulz mix??)
Markus Schulz ft. Departure - Without You Near

Really nice seeing and chatting with Markus and Heather, and OMFG I met Carrie Skipper, the vocalist from the song Carrie Skipper - Time Goes By (Super 8 Deep mix), a song I love to listen to, as well as play in my Amtrak sets.
Also did the vocals in Markus' latest track, Never be the same again. OMFG gorgeous girl, and super hot English accent.
*fap fap
Okay let me stop.
Heather can I get her number please?
And....finally onto my personal favorite, Rank 1.
Back in September, Seasunz and I, along with Tim of David Lewis Productions, attempted to bring Rank 1 for his first ever South Florida appearance. That gig blew up in our faces, to put it mildly, thanks to inept club management. I was devastated, as well as infuriated, and I felt in all honesty that Rank 1 would never come to Florida again.
Whoever on Armada decided to book Rank 1 for THIS Armada night, made a very smart decision.
Tonight, my personal fav. dj/producer (and one helluva funny guy
) totally DESTROYED the main room. Energy from beginning to finish. Tracks included:
Life Less Ordinary
Unknown Artist - Unchained Melody
Ferry Corsten - Beautiful (remix)
Sun Decade - I'm Alone (Stoneface and Terminal vocal mix)
This World is watching me
And....Piet played 2 out of my 3 requests....
Rank 1 - [email protected]
and......what I had been waiting to hear in my home state....
Rank 1 - Brairwave.
When I heard Brairwave come on, I got up from the VIP section I was in and started running to the dance floor, yelling "OUTTA MY WAY!!!" not caring who was standing there, just as long as I got to the floor to listen to my song played.
What a moment.
And he even played a song I didn't ever think I would hear live...
Dutch Force - Deadline
For those who aren't in the know, Dutch Force is a Rank 1 alias.
And at 8:00 A.M., we thought it would end.
boy were we wrong
Piet went on to play FOUR ENCORES, 3 of 4 I could ID.
Ridgewalkers featuring El - Find (Andy Moor mix)
System F - Out of the Blue
3 drives on a vinyl - Greece 2000.
This was my 5th time seeing Rank 1 live, and EASILY, the best time. 2 1/2 hours of solid tunes (minus one song he played that he KNEW I hated
and he texted that this song was for me
I'll never tell him I hate a song again.
) I also felt vindicated. Piet got what he deserved: a crowded room with people dancing, screaming and enjoying all the tracks he played. That's the way it SHOULD HAVE gone down in September, but I am very glad it happened at Twilo the way it did.
This was one HELL of a way to end the conference, and the TA turnout was absolutely incredible. Great seeing Boomer187, his girlfriend M, nice meeting infinite trance from Orlando, great seeing Michelle (sweetcandy girl), Sarah (gypsygirl), Mario (das_mario), truly nice meeting Karen (DancingQueen) and Chris Allen from TOTA, good seeing Kristina Sky from L.A., my bud Elevation, DigitalPhoenix, MJM420, Damon, av1, Leon (tranceman23) and my usual FLTA crew. Also awesome having Ferry Corsten, Suzy Solar, LiL-B hanging out with us. Many thanks to ambs for accompanying me and helping with the parking.
Hope you enjoyed your breakfast. <3 Sorry if I didn't mention/forgot your names, but I am dead tired. This was TRULY a great, great night. THANK YOU, Piet, Armin and Markus.
"Tooth" Decay, go to the orthodontist...but at least your set wasn't THAT bad.
When Piet was done spinning, Danny Tenaglia went up onto the decks and that was my cue to GET THE FUCK OUT.
I yelled to ambs, "WE GOTTA GO, NOW!!"
Oh yeah, and OMFGHI2U to that girl who was with us at the end...what a rack and legs...but I still want Carrie Skipper.
Pics to come later.

Here are my pics.

Piet behind the decks for his sick ass closing set.

End of pics. A lot of you guys were toting cameras...Vic, you got some sick shots! You better post them bitches!
Those are some weird ass glasses you have there.
what a party. it just sucks that m and I have to check out of our room at 12!!! in 1 hour. because of that we left kinda early. but it was probably the best party overall for the conference.
I actually liked dekay, as far as openning sets go, he setup armin perfectly. ferry had some horrible openner (before edgar v who saved it) who almost killed to night, so I appreciated a good openner. he didn't peak too soon and played solid tracks.
armin of course rocked it like no other, and markus kicked in his style smoothly.
and we got to meet ferry! (pics later when I get home) he is so cool. I also chatted with elevation who is hilarious
saw sharam multiple times but it seemed like we shouldn't bother him.
all in all a good close to my first wmc. w000t.
Wenddy texted me during Mindcircus. I know I should have been there with you, Suzy, and Bri but this year it was Holland!!
Armin: how about on your next visit to Florida you include Tampa (preferably Floyd's at the Hard Rock like we once discussed).
nice review DA
are you wearing chemestry goggles?
just got back to new york - left twilo at 5 for my flight didnt catch rank1 boo armin played almost the same set at pawn shop
twilo was nice, lighting and sound was on par!

Oh fuck yeah...this was the first time I saw Armin live and holy shit did he bang it out! He is so much better live than any video or mp3 can depict. His set was a killer for sure! He is a master at bringing you up and down and way back up...
Dekay had a good opening set that set the stage for Armin almost perfectly. He got the crowd warmed up. That was his job. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Markus's style was almost grating to me at points. He is like the heavy metal of trance. His set consisted of totally high BPM's and he never slowed down, only went even faster!
Holy shit, Piet of Rank 1, let me tell you, he blew my mind with what he was doing! He had such killer cuts like I've never heard before. I left at like a little before 7AM and he was still going full tilt!
Overall a totally nuts night and what a great way to close out my second WMC!!! So glad I went to this one. I'm pissed that I forgot my camera though...
so wait, armins closer was mindcircus and thats supposed to be good???
i LOVE that song, but when he was here last he fucking closed with the same track! play different classics when you close. plzkthxarminsucks

Really Really look forward the full tracklist of Markus Schulz!!
Hey guys, Let me just say that I had a wonderful time last night at Twilo, The place was packed. I'm sure everyone was there since I didn't get a chance to see you all. But I was at the DJ booth the whole time, I'm sure you noticed me up there. Anyways, Here are my pictures, Enjoy.
oh that mixer is sooooo spicy!
Left around 6:10 after 2 Rank1 encore songs... MISSED GREECE 2000?!!!!!!!
All 3 of them simply killed Twilo. IMO Twilo is THE best club in Miami. The sound, huge floor, lights, crowd, etc.
Loved Heaven Scent and Mindcircus...
Almost forgot, said whats up to Markus when he was walking by. My first DJ meeting.... omgyay.

Overall a perfect night. This party was what WMC and trance music are supposed to be all about. Perfect tunes, great venue, and awesome vibe.
I caught a little more than 2 hours of Armin, and he absolutelty leveled Twilo. His set had everything a set is supposed to have: great track selection, perfect transitions, energy galore, and a flow and direction that took the crowd on the ride we all needed to close out a week of madness. No one was standing still, everyone goin off, the vibe was just amazing. And let's just say Armin stayed true to trance, with lots of energy and no prog at all.
Then came Markus, and with Armin setting such a high standard with an upbeat fast-paced set I knew Markus was gonna bang it out properly, and he did. No fluff, playing harder than I ever remember hearing him play. Nothing slow at all until around 1 1/2 hours in, and that was just a couple of songs to let everyone take a breather. While Armin took the cake, Markus also dropped a great set.
Finally Rank 1 (Piet) came on around 6, and started really techy and hard but kinda slower tempo stuff. Yet he knew what he was doing because by the third or fourth song the crowd really started getting into it and then an all-out frenzy ensued. Hard nasty closing set up until 7:30 when I left. A perfect closer for this night and great choice to do so. Happy that after the prior fiasco, Piet finally got to experience and play at a proper Miami party.
Oh, Forgot to mention, Markus played Jav D & Tim Grube Featuring Catherine - Taurine last night. Its unfortunately that Tim Grube missed him playing it due to his flight back home. Hopefully someone recorded a video of the tune playing.
