EM - SOS March 2006 or Howells Feb 2007

After feeling both mixes more than a few times, i've decided as amazing as Howells' is, SOS is more to my liking/style.

If i had to sat why, it'd be that SOS' mix is more on the progressive side at times (which i prefer) and just a bit more rhythmic throughout in general.

Nit-picky, but thats how i am:
SOS 9.3/10
Howells 9.1/10

You?? Why???

Howells. I thought S.O.S's mix from last year lacked flow at certain times and I found a few of the tracks to be very poorly placed. As well I found the SOS mix to be alot more surface than the Howell's mix. Howell's EM IMO just had alot more feel to it, alot more depth, alot more meaning. The set as a whole told a far better story than that of SOS's.

Sling, I could be wrong, but I don't think it's music you are looking for, it is...

Wow well said. The Howells essential mix truly does tell a story and take me on a journey.

You said it perfectly.

The SOS mix, while it has its moments, at times it just feels like it "stumbles", or loses some of it's flow. I attribute it to the fact that there's 3 guys mixing, instead of one, so sometimes there's a bit of "miscommunication" so to speak. The mixing is a little weak too at times, and again, it goes back to the fact that you have 3 guys on like 2 mixers, 4 CDJ's, 2 laptops, bla bla bla. All they're missing is a monkey playing on some bongo's.

mr. howells definitely mixed us a nice story last feb .. not to mention many amazing stories before ... however, i still feel that some of the rhythms brought by SOS in last yr's march EM remain too good to forget ..

yes there r some stumbles ... and yes u can actually tell when desyn & omid16b & demi switch between tracks, each with their own distinct style .. but the catch is, they were all gr8, and that night sorta ended with 3 scattered mini stories rather than a monstrous 3 hour one (odds r u get more misplaced/dull tracks as the length of the set increases).. danny's stuff was deep, no doubt, i was hooked on it for dayz before i started listenin' to other sets again.. BUT the harmony of beats & rhythm and the 'boat-party' like energy brought by the tunes in the SOS EM outweigh danny's imo...

cheers!

depends on the mood you are in. Party mood = SOS . Chill out mood = howells. Both essentials are awesome though.

I've actually listened to the Howells EM from this year, but being a House n00b, I clearly missed that there was a story to the set. So uhhh what is the story that it told? I'm being completely serious here as I have NO idea what you guys are on about.

I think sling just meant that the set was more of an aural "story" (or journey, if you prefer) than the SOS set. There's no story with plot-twists and shit.

i've listened to both, howells is better imo

How old are you? (i'm being completely serious here)

I agree, although it's kind of silly to compare them imo. Sure the sounds/genres are somewhat similar and comparable but the formats for me are very different. Kind of like comparing a novel to a magazine. (if that makes any sense)

Or a trade magazine to an industry publication.

Both are great - it just depends on the type of music you are listening at that point in time.

That's actually a great analogy. I think Howells tried to achieve a lot more with his set than SOS was.

Just in the same way a trance set can take you on a journey with ebbs and flows and ups and downs, so too can a house set. If you don't understand how a trance set can take you on a journey then it is impossible to explain...

Totally agree...SOS was much more magazine than Howells' novel

Posted by oldschool420 on Mar-28-2007 19:46:

If I had to choose, SOS would take the cake. Howells EM was decent but not my cup at of tea at all. I don't really listen to house in general for any kind of story or journey. I just want good tunes that make me feel good, and that is the kind of house that SOS delivers. Again that is just my opinion.
