"Mix It Your Damn Self 1"

�Mix It Your Damn Self 1� DJ Mixing Contest

Introduction

A new idea was purposed to create a different sort of mixing contest, one that requires DJ to work with stock material rather than picking and choosing their playlist. Although the rigidity of the playlist isn't taken to the extreme here, ten tracks with different mixes were selected to provide a challenge to DJs to create a set that must demonstrate skill, talent, and creativity despite the limiting playlist.

Ten trance tracks and their respected beatport.com mixes are considered the mixing medium here.








Rules:

There is a 15 set entry limit. Make sure you upload promptly!
No extraneous sound files or samples may be used.
Mixes can be no longer than 30 minutes long.
Djs may use as many songs as they would like.
Mixes must be produced live.
DJs can rerecord as many times as they want.
One set per submission per DJ.

Submission rules:

Mixes must be submitted in this thread between April 22 - 28.


The submission must include:

- Name
- Name of Mix
- Genre(if applicable)
- Mixing medium(Cds, MP3s, Vinyl)
- Mixing equipment
- A tracklist of all tracks used in the mix in order
- A link to download the mix
- Mix has to be between 128-192kbps

40% Technical Ability -

Are the beats matched?
Phrasing?
Gain levels?
EQ?
Able to keep a prolonged beat matched up properly?
Are the rhythmic effects on beat?

40% Set Structure, Energy, and Overall Impression -

Did the DJ cut out too early of a song?
Too late?
Did the DJ peak too early?
Overall Impression?

20% Creativity & Tricks -

FX?
Cutting?
Scratching?
Tricks?
Mash ups?
Did the DJ make this set his own? Did it sound cookiecutterish?


Overall Score out of 100



Scoring:

The judges will compile their own individual scores out of 100, then the final score will be the averaged out for the final score.

Post Contest Mix Reviews

All mixes will have posted scores and judge's comments. Judges - take note of why you give particular scores and type it out!

Winner will be announced the week of May 6th to May 12th.

Sorry, I don't want to start the 'ask a million questions' game, but is there a time limit on the mix length? Is the idea to keep things short and interesting? Or just make it nice and smoooth

You can't scratch over those tunes and make it sound good. I'm not even going to touch the "cookie cutter-ish" part (blatantly obvious) because I imagine it was already discussed when the tunes were selected.

I've heard a trance set with scratching in it and it sounded good. I wish I still had it on my computer.

I've listen to many sets and CDs and I've gotten to a point where I listen to a set and I wonder what really makes this DJ so special?

On one hand I want to hear a good track flow with decent technical skills, but on the other hand I want to hear something creative.

Maybe you try and scratch or you try to attempt to mash up the entire set. I don't know, but no matter how bad it sounds I can still appreciate a DJ trying something new even if it sounds terrible.

Yeah actually i leave on holiday May 4th, but if theres around 15 i should be able to get them done in 28th-4th, especially if anyone submits early.

I'm inclined to agree but thems the rules I'm afraid I'm gonna have to count myself out on this, work is getting the better of me: 12 hour days & every weekend - not even got time to get to gym & my young boys are both in bed well before I get home

It's a shame as I was looking forward to this. I can listen to music all day at work so will gladly add some comments on the entries

Good luck this should be interesting (though I'd still rather have heard what everyone could do when given the same tracks).

Would it be ok if the mixes are a little bit longer than 30 mins. i.e. 1 or 2 mins longer. Or do they have to be under exactly 30 mins?
