Muslim greeting
I was on the receiving end of a handshake followed by a covering of the heart today. I think it is an unbelievably cool gesture, so I'm looking into some Muslim greeting habits, quite intriguing.
But almost everything I dug up covers Muslim-Muslim greeting, now I myself am an atheist, and I would like to know if it is impolite for a non-Muslim to greet a Muslim with this handshake, if it is appropriate for me to greet with 'Assalamu Alilkum (Wa Rahmatulah (Wa Barakatuh))', now I think the man is from South-East Asia, are the above words global? Or will he go like 'WT*, do I look like Arabic??' Can I combine the handshake and the vocal greeting?
Who greets who if I am sitting in a smaller group and he comes in walking and being part of a larger group? Do I rise from my chair?
It's not like I'm going to go in depth with this, I just think it's pretty basic and I want to return the courtesy from today. Cool btw that it is 'prescribed' to smile when greeting. I could learn from them.
make sure you pray to the east then look to the west for the next incomming 767.
i rise from my chair any time i greet someone during business
laid back poolside i'd probably just sit there as they made their rounds of hello and contine on with my drink

The moment I posted, I asked myself: 'How are they gonna make this thread chilly, it's way too serious for the COR'.
I shall never again underestimate the power of the COR.

There's absolutely no historical unifying culture other than religion - ie no system of governance, common shared society, literary tradition, etc. It's like saying the Indians have a saying "go screw yourself" when there were like 250 tribes of Native Americans. |

| Originally posted by Lebezniatnikov um, no. The United States is a federal republic. Hardly comparable to an ethnic group that spans multiple national entities and has never shared a common cultural identity as a result. How can you compare Palestinians to the Janjaweed in Sudan for instance? Or the Beduoin to Arab merchants in Oman? You can't -- they come from different historical traditions and have completely distinct cultures apart from their ethnic identity. |
