sampling, copying old styles etc..

I read this post about mylo sampling, and it seems as if a lot of people look down on sampling, copying, borrowing ideas, whatever

I read an article by a u of chicago professor, and it said mostly plagiarism should be looked down upon if it hurts the original creator, and throughout most of history artists, musicians have copied or borrowed ideas from previous arists

picasso said "good artists borrow great artists stea" or something close to that

in any case its a great idea to BORROW ideas, never to copy something verbatim

those are my 2 cents

A lot of people don't look down on sampling, and you'd be very surprised just how many of the "popular" tunes nowadays are sampling something else. What it all boils down to is how you use the sample.

yes Im aware, of the pop songs

cupids chokehold
gwen stefani songs
on and on

and then in edm

in college, plaigarism for us was considered a mortal sin

copying verbatim is a problem I think, but borrowing ideas and turning them into something new and creative is a good thing

It depends on how you view sampling. I for one think that when used modestly can be seen as an artist paying homage to another artist.

That line is uber thin though.

what is sampling though, replaying the song exactly verbatim, or taking certain elements and putting them towards something new..

the latter is I think what we all should strive for,

the quote is:

"Good Artists borrow. Great artists steal." - Picasso

Assignments are not creative pieces. They are not art. It's a different thing altogether.

Sampling on its own is neither good nor bad. Sampling can be an extremely potent creative tool or an extremely derivative one. It depends entirely on how the sample is used.

Art is about the product. School assignments are about their author.
