Heading out to Jamaica next week...

I know people post lame threads like this all the time...
But...

Has any one been there?
Is it like other carribean countries like cuba/dominican?
We're staying in Ocho Rios.
Advice?

I hear the Jamaicans got quite a soft spot for something called Marijuana, so look out.

I've been to OChos Rios twice.

But that was like 10 years ago? Maybe like 7...

But the bus ride there is quite interesting. It's 1.5 hours from Montego Bay (which is where im guessing your flying into). The bus drivers are absolutely insane and the roads suck haha..but its an interesting journey...atleast you get to see what its like...kinda poor and stuff.

When I went, we went the markets and everything in town and stuff which was okay, but I still felt a little uneasy about my safety. I've heard that there has been more violence in the past several years and its best to stay to the resort your going to. Ochos Rios is a resort kind of town so there will be lots of tourists.

I've never been, but if you go, everyone says you have to go to Dunns river falls or whatever...its the place where you climb up the waterfall or whatever...

I personally would just stay in my resort, and have a nice relaxing time drinking till I pass out! But there are markets and stuff which you can go to in town and what not if you want to experience that...

that's what I heard too - I was flying from Frankfurt in August, and was chatting with a couple sitting next to me on the plane, who went to Jamaica recently, and the lady said that they were given bodyguards whenever they left resort and traveled elsewhere

heard it on TV that there were about 300 homicides in January alone. Don't wander off to where you shouldn't be. Other than that I've seen pics of the beaches and they're beautiful

Wholy fuck. That's a lot of homicides! I deffinatly want to hit up the markets. I love shopping at markets in the caribbean. All the wood art and canvases they usually sell are amazing. I'm getting a place with one of my girlfriends soon so we want to get stuff to decorate our place with.

I'll deffinatly hit up the falls. The book we got with our travel package had pictures, and they look beautiful!

I went to Negril. They treat white people and tourists like kings (and they explain because they have money of course), but will treat their own people like shit (ie: they asked me if my blunt was good while I was smoking on the beach but arrested a jamaican chick for doing the exact same thing)

They will give you an ENTIRE grocery bag full of weed for $40.

The strippers at the strip club will bust out in full on gang bangs in the middle of the stage for no money at all. seriously. interesting to watch the weird positions. lol

A lot of violence and poverty. Very sad and a culture clash. dont EVER EVER go to kingston.

The taxis will get in accidents fighting for your service (we got TWO taxis in car accidents, and they will run you over as well)

BEST sunsets ever and GORGEOUS cliffs, with cliff diving being an awesome thing that we experienced.

They love thick white women with tits like myself and will HOUND you.

Beautiful place and very nice people, esp when they aren't trying to sell you something. The people are so poor there that they will fight for money, and walk next to you for 10 minutes.

a lot of fun things to do if you stay in a town that offers touristy things.

amazing waterfalls near ocho rios.

RUM RUM RUM everywhere...drunk and high all the time.

best bet: enjoy the beach and the service they will give you, enjoy the clubs and bar joints that are so much fun on the beach at night with some jammin music.....they will kiss your ass for money and they are very chill and wonderful people for the most part. Keep your money to yourself tho because even tho they are genuinely nice people, most of them have barely enough to eat everyday and aren't stupid about the fact that you have money.

Oh yeah, one more thing, this is probably like the rest of the Carribean...but...

LOCALS LOVE AMERICAN PRODUCTS.

American products like Nike and Adidas are gold over there. Like when you go golfing, most golf courses give you caddy when go (not an option). They say that the best tip you can give them is like a Nike hat or t-shirt and the caddies eyes will glow!
So if you want to bring some $1 hats and tshirts or something, you may be able to get some cool stuff.

But Ochos Rios did have a decent marketplace if you want to get some cool things!

As for the violence, majority of it is in Kingston the capital, but there was a point when they were targeting tourists and stuff cause the locals didn't like all of the tourists and stuff like that. But I think Ochos Rios is pretty safe. I think you can probably a get a tour guide if you want. But it should be fine.

Ochos Rios is also one of the main ports for all of the large cruises and stuff so there will always be tons of tourists in the markets and stuff like that

Anyways...HAVE FUN!!

i was born and raised in JA til i was 8 yrs old and i've been back lots of times. All you need to do is use common sense don't flash money around or get dressed up like your here in the city just be street smart and don't trust just any sketchy dude that walks up to you especially at night. In the day however leave the resort and explore the many beaches in Ochi (as locals call it) and markets you'll find some cool stuff(hats, wood carvings) never pay what they ask in the market you can usually get things cheaper than advetised just bargain with the person and you're garanteed a laugh and a deal.

Extasie metioned Dunns River Falls its really nice there a little pricey but you gotta go, the beach at the base of the falls in immaculate white sand as far as the eye can see trust me. Oh man i really miss my family and the island.

I think you'll have an awesome time in Jamaica just enjoy the atmosphere and the playful nature of the people and all will go well.

btw make sure and try some jerk chicken or pork from a street vendor but make sure their cooking it in a barrel turned bbq, you'll know when you see it.
