I think a good starting synth that sounds really good and makes you understand basic synthesis is the Nord Lead 2x. It's not too expensive has a great sound, lets you do some basic fm and doesn't have any fx. So you learn how to make the synth parts sound good instead of depending on fx. You can always add those later. Fx make an already great sound better.

You can pick up a nord lead 2x rack for probably around $700 dollars.

If you know someone who works at a music store, more like $600

and if you look around on ebay you can get em used for as cheap as $400

Thats my suggestion if you want a hardware synth thats good for beginners and wont break the bank. Also it will last with you a long time, It's got a great sound and is a very pro synth even if it's good for beginners.
