I wonder how much this operation cost.

Tacoma Man Gets 15 Years in Prison for
Very Sophisticated Marijuana Grow Operation
Men Built "Ferris Wheel" like contraptions to cultivate more than 1,000 plants

JAN 19--CHAD ROBERT LATHAM, 30, of Tacoma, Washington was sentenced today to 15 years in prison and five years of supervised release for Conspiracy to Manufacture Marijuana and Manufacturing Marijuana. At sentencing U.S. District Judge Ronald B. Leighton noted that LATHAM had two prior state convictions for growing marijuana.

According to the plea agreement, LATHAM designed eight machines out of aluminum that looked like ferris wheels. Each machine held 24 rows of plants with eight plants in each row for a total of 192 plants per machine. The plants would rotate around the machine, passing by grow lights, dipping into a hydroponic grow solution at the bottom or passing under a hydroponic grow solution spray at the top. In 2003-2004, the grow operation was located in a garage in rural Pierce County in McKenna, Washington. A co-conspirator, DANIEL IRWIN, lived on the property and hung a deteriorating deer carcase near the door to the building so that the smell of the rotting deer would mask the smell of marijuana.

In March of 2004, someone discovered the grow operation and LATHAM determined it needed to be moved. In the middle of the night on March 8, 2004, LATHAM and others attempted to move the operation to a warehouse at S. Clement Street in Tacoma. Neighbors heard what they thought was suspicious activity in the alley and called Tacoma Police. LATHAM was arrested and 2,083 marijuana plants were seized.

The case was investigated by the DEA/ TNET Task Force comprised of DEA agents and local law enforcement officers from Tacoma Police, Pierce County Sheriffs Office, Washington State Patrol, Washington State Department of Corrections, Bonney Lake Police and Auburn Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Douglas J. Hill. Hill is a Deputy Pierce County Prosecutor who is specially designated to handle drug cases in Federal Court

To put it into perspective, here are some PURELY HYPOTHETICAL numbers for the cost of growing pot on a significantly smaller scale (4-6 plants ready to harvest each month producing 1.5-3 lbs of herb):

Electric Bill: Approx. $200-$230 per month
Nutrients: Approx. $100 per month
Misc. (Soil, Pots, tubing, repairs): Approx $100 per month, but could be as high as $200
Time spent making sure things were good/making adjustments: 3 to 4 hours per day, every day.

All in all, after initial expenses are paid, for an operation significantly smaller, you're still talking about $500-$600 a month in upkeep alone.

No, I don't really give a shit what people do in their homes, but its when they get caught and the FEDS make a big case about it that it makes me mad.

We already have federal agents setting up random checkpoints in the middle of our state "looking for terrorists".

Anything to keep the US Federal Government out of Washington State.

Wow, thats about the most sophisticated setup I've ever heard of and 2,000 plants...thats just crazy. I'm all for legalization and everything but the sad fact is that it is illegal and that no one can keep an operation of that scale unknown to police for long.

People like this are just trying to make shitloads of money. A main positive reason to legalizing weed is so there wouldn't be people like this making shitloads of money with a huge operation so that the police then need to use their resources (our tax money) to find and then bust them.

We don't really need to fuck up the States, the States did a good job of doing that all on it's own. Truth.

maybe 100 for nutes per month if ur doing hydro, soil costs pennies, and the weed tastes better.
Always gro organic, dro is for gangbangers.
you dont need to do 4hours a day, plants grow by themselves.

This image is one room that was a silo that was laying on it's side

Posted by Mentol on Apr-14-2007 23:00:

Oh yea I think that was the old abanonded LeBatts brewery... one of the biggest operations in Canada. The guys lived in the actual brewery.

Posted by pmoisse on Apr-14-2007 23:11:

Molsons, which is now part of Coors. but yeah, guys lived there and everything.

nobody had a clue.

Apparently it was running for around 3-4years if not more
