Question

Why do trance DJs get catapulted to superstardom so much more so than DJs of other genres?

I was thinking about this as I watched a couple of the Bal en Blanc videos - Armin was signing endless requests for autographs, on shirts, on CDs, on body parts and I wonder, what is it about trance DJs (Tiesto, Ferry, Armin and whoever else) that has people freaking out so much for photos, autographs, etc?

You don't really see this (to the same degree) with DJs of other genres, do you?

I guess it's cause everyone wants to have a picture or autograph of the people who represent their favourite genre and music. Similar to how people would want autographs of DJ Clue or Khaled for hip hop music. Also trance DJs are probably recognized more internationally, hip-hop seems to be mainly in North America.

I'm not really sure that trance DJ's are of anymore 'superstar' status than other genre's.

I mean, guys like Sasha, Diggers, Deep Dish, Lawler, Sander K, Benny B, etc. all attract fans like mad. I'm sure they sign autographs as well.

As for techno DJ's... I'll quote Brad Copeland from WMC as we were sitting on the Beatport Remix Hotel watching Magda, Tommy Sunshine, and Hawtin: "Why is it that all these techno DJ's look like they're homeless?"

Although just for you Sarah, I did run into Miss. Barbara and she's definitely still smokin'.

So in that regard, general composure and look of those superstar 'trance' DJ's is more helpful for bringing in fans. Armin, Ferry, Tiesto or the others you mentioned generally look put together, clean, and are crowd pleasing people. I think that's one of many avenue's that draw people in who may or may not like the music.

If you don't believe me, how many times do you hear "OMG ARMIN IS SOOOOO HOT" ?

Why is it so hard to comprehend that trance is pop music? They ask Armin for autographs for the same reason they throw their underwear at Mick Jagger and Justin Timberlake.

House music has its share of fanboys too, albeit fewer than trance, but if you're talking about electro or techno or breaks, they just don't have the same critical mass. They probably never will, either; trance was adaptable that way from the start due to its structural formula, the other types aren't.

What makes you think people can't comprehend that? because I asked a question?

The same can be said about some of the most famous Rock stars...but they get mad attention so its not because of that.

Trance is the new goth, the group all the losers join to identify with other losers. Only idiots worship men like gods. The DJ isn't telling them to do that, they do it of their own free will. You tell me that isn't loser behavior.

I think the reason why trance DJs get that whole 'God-like' status is due to the music that they play. Trance is a very emotional, over the top genre, and the DJ is there to get the most he can out of a crowd, push them to the "reach for the lasers" point. So naturally, a DJ who can get people to achieve such a high state of emotion, is viewed as being out of this world, incredible, "omg i die" good. You just can't get that with other genres, because they're more subtle, and to some extent more mature.

In other words, trance people are sheep.

edit: LOL @ Chris Allen's reply. Are you fucking for real man? Do you beat off to pics of Tiesto??

Posted by zoogla on Apr-15-2007 18:41:

Simple. Trance has more love and House has more attitude.

+1.

It took only a few events for me to realize that trance DJs make ppl feel good, particularly with the specific sort of music they play and the emotions and energy they typically display; so, showing them adoration is, it seems to me, a means to demonstrate appreciation for the memorable experiences they help create.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Apr-15-2007 19:22:

Trance fans are like that needy virgin you fucked in high school and just wouldn't go away after.

Posted by SPANIARD on Apr-15-2007 19:30:

Easy: The more exposure that media (mainstream radio in particular) gives Trance DJ's like Ferry, Armin, Tiesto, PVD and the more that the word gets around about the DJ Mag top 100 list, the more someone will believe the status of the DJ. Ok yeah, I don't see that many people going nuts over Christopher Lawrence because he's 4 or 5, but he doesn't have a track or remix on the radio, but I'm sure if he did then everyone would categorize him as the names listed above. This is from my experience anyhow, I can't tell you how many of my friends who only go see big name DJ's as an excuse to do drugs tell me " I went to see the #2 DJ in world, Armin Van Buuren" and then give me lectures on how I'm stupid because I wouldn't put him in my top 100 lol.

No, because you asked a question that has an obvious answer (as explained by digi), and was cleverly made to give Househeads an opportunity to shoot their mouth off (as is displayed by jennypie throughout this thread).

I think I'm going to start a thread asking, "Why is House music so fucking gay?", and see what kind of responses it gets.
