Are Dj's Musicians?

or do they just play music?

i actually feel that a dj is not really a musician. a dj is someone who promotes other peoples music to spread it out to the world. turntablism is different to me though because you are creating your own sounds but a dj who simply mixes 2 tracks together is not a musician to me.

A DJ plays music. A musician is basically defined as one who plays or composes music.

Good DJs are, yes.

no not really....

anyway, for me, i feel that there are 2 different musicians, the artist, and the composer, I feel the DJ is the artist.

fine, I'm not really all that hungup on the term musician anyways. So someone like John Digweed isn't a musician, but some 8 year old playing the flute is? Whatever.

another snag you run into with this thread is that most dj's at some point or another dab in producing/ making the tracks themselves.

the dj the artist? i fell the producer is the artist and the dj is just that...a dj

a dj is just a disc jockey, they play the music. what a person actually does behind the tables is what defines them as an artist.

no a dj is not a musician unless he/she produces music imo

No, means "NO"...I'm taking a nap now!

john digweed produces music so yes he is a musician to me...i know this is a very vague and open to lots of opninion question and thats why i thought it would be good to post.

Well if this topic has been beaten to death over the past 10-15 years now
A DJ just plays other people's music, yes, but a dj also manipulates music and makes it sound the way he wants it too, and expresses himself by taking you on an extended journey.
It's an endless debate.

i am going to have to agree with this one
but at the same time people like mistress barbara for example
a trained drummer, definitely brings these skills to other peoples tracks in her mixes with knowledge of abstract rhythms
My favorite are those djs who are musicians like farina who blends key signatures making two tracks act as one......now that shit is crazyyyyy

You know what annoys me, is when they call groups like N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys, "boy bands". Are they playing their own instruments? NO. They are not a BAND.

what about robin hood and his band of merry men?

To answer the other question. I think some DJs are musicians. EDM DJs in particuluar typically don't just play a song, they play around with the song, do mashups, develop a good flow with tracks.

DJs on the radio, and DJs at probably most Top 40 clubs on the other hand just play songs. There's no flow, or manipulation with the songs (at least nothing that sounds good). When they mix songs...if you can even call it that...it's basically just overlaying 2 songs that sound terrible together and then switching over from one to the next.

lol every topic relating to dj'ing has been exhausted, I just run with it.

Posted by DigiNut on Apr-15-2007 22:28:

No.

Producers aren't necessarily musicians either, although a lot of the better producers also play/played one or more instruments instruments.

i always thought of dj's as condcutors more than anything else.
