well crap... 2 feet of water in a place it shouldn't be...

um yeah, so I woke up this morning at 4am to hear light rain on the roof... that was nice. it looked like a great Sunday here in NYC for lounging and reading a good book all day. I was not so lucky.
After casually getting up and having a wonderful breakfast it struck me.... it was raining very hard now. I stopped. and then it came to me. the last time we got a little bit of rain here I ended up with an inch of water in my basement. I ran down stairs to find everything underwater! I have 9 book cases down there. There books on the bottom shelves are ruined. I had a ton crap down there including boxes of pictures.... all soaked in water. I have been operating a industrial wet vac all day since. I'm pooped and I still have 6 inches of water left to go with no signs of the rain stopping for the next 4 days.

So much for my laid back sunday. And I guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow after work, and on tuesday and wednesday and likely on thursday too. At least it's a good work out hauling out 60 gallons of water at a time per bucket. I don't have to feel guilty about not getting to the gym this weekend. lol.

sump pump? insured?

Posted by MKpacha on Apr-15-2007 23:03:

(hug) i sympathise... i have had my basement flooded 2 times in this past month...
my best advice... if you have home insurance (because u for sure have hit damage costs by now) get flooding experts in... they will clean it for you, and you need to get rid of the mould because it will make you super sick when everything is dry, and it will smell RANCID.

Ok I finally rigged up a pump to directly pump water through a hose into a huge laundry sink. It's working on its own now, so I only need to check it every couple of hours. Now I can get some other work done.

Once the rain stops I'll have to contact the insurance company and see what can be done. I'm moving in a month so I'd hate to have to make a claim between now and then but at least if my rates go up I can just leave the country!

haha, I actually sat and had one last night as I collapsed after all the hard work. I'm down to a few small puddles here and there. Work was canceled today since we are in a state of emergency and the police came by to tell us to return home at 10am, took me almost 2 hours to get to work today only to turn around and go home. on the plus side I get paid for a rain day off work and Popsicles!

VERY TRUE... but the loss of books would be a MASSIVE HUGE blow me too... i highly value my read book collection. i cant imagine what my level of grief would be over losing them.

and photos! if they werent saved in digital form on a computer... thats just as bad!

i value my photos and the memories they trigger and i have attached to them very strongly.

Same. Though I'm not a DJ - so don't really have vinyls - to me photos would be more important. Most of the time you can get another record, but if you don't have copies of the pictures...those are captured memories lost forever.

if it was vinyl i would cry

i remember i had a couple of sick vinyls in the back of my buddies car last summer, and we got too fucked that night and the next day all my vinyl had their own special shapes

I thought our spring out here was nutty - I've been seeing the pictures from Jersey and NY and damn! That is some hardcore flooding!

(P.S. The island of Manhattan is ALWAYS sinking)
