Getting a fragment of a track stuck in your head...

Maybe my mind is just a bit scrambled, but this a phenomenon that seems to happen to me a lot these days. Out of nowhere (usually when I wake up in the morning) I'll get a little snippet of a track stuck in my head. I'm sometimes not even completely sure of the melody, but it'll rattle around my skull like a loose screw and I'll spend all day trying to remember what the hell it is I'm playing back to myself.

The last time it happened to me, I got a really bad case and I was dragging CDs off the shelf for a few days trying to put a song to this little percussion bit I had in my mind. Turned out it was the outro to DJ Shadow - The Number Song.

I got it again today, although it only took me a few hours to figure out what I had in my head. This time it was Sheertaft - Cascades (Hypnotone Mix). I just had the vocal snippet and the break in my head... for no reason! I haven't played the track in months, and I somehow doubt I heard it on TV.

Anyway, does your brain ever hold miniature ID Competitions with you?

Yeah I've got that too, but just once in a while.. Sucks big time if you don't know it

I have one all the time.

All I remember from it is some male vocal saying "Set your mind in motion, motion." or something similar.

And no, it's not Witness of Wonder.

Yup. There's a track of which I can hear a little snippet in my head, which I have been trying to ID for about 6 years because I can't remember what it is. Talk about frustrating.

I dreamt one time that i was at a club and this huuuuge track was playing...and i remember in the dream i was thinking hey i know this track what's it called...then i woke up...and tried all day to remember what song it was...then i called my friend who also listens to EDM and startede humming the melody, turns out it's a track he made that i heard a few nights before

Posted by skip on Apr-16-2007 20:09:

i sometimes have this too. usually it's just some track i can id rather quickly though, but that won't stop it playing in my head though.
i've had this one track play in my head every now and then that i can't for the life of me id. and what's even more frustrating is that it's a brilliant track (at least i think so) and i figured out this one track that would probably mix pretty well with it. in the track goes there's a chick singing something along the lines "i'll hold you forevermore, stay with me all the time..." could be love you forevermore too. dunno. still i haven't id'd it and it truly is frustrating.

Hits too close to home.

Local prog house DJ dropped a BOMB a couple years ago. Never got the chance to ask him for the ID. The melody was stuck in my head for weeks, so I tried to recreate it on guitar (the melody was a guitar anyways). I emailed him and he has no idea.

Recently there was a track produced by Envio called "Love Poison" which resembled the melody, but the track I heard was a lot more proggy and middle eastern sounding, Mo Shic style.

Probably the best track I've ever heard, and I'll never hear it again...live anyways.

always, just today i had the first half of the bassline sample from tiesto's traffic but idk what it was untill i got home because i got to listen to the whole bassline sample, i couldnt even concentrate in school.

Wish you didn't get that memory implant now.

Happens to me all the time. I remember when part of a melody got stuck in my head a long time ago, i was convinced it was something by matt darey, so i listened to every matt darey track i had without any results. I never figured out what it was. Also quite recently i had some notes stuck in the head along with the words "punk ass nigga", clearly a rap tune but those words were not really of any help in that context. Anyway, it was Cypress Hill - The Only Way.

I remember Thrillseekers spinning a dancefloor killer track a night of one year ago, but never asked to him the name of the track, I doubt he will remember it. Even Alex Morph was completely took by surprise by this track that he stepped on dj floor and asked to the Thrillseekers to show him the cd, so maybe I should ask to him before. It was one of those track with crazy melodies and a great bassline, but it had no vocals so I remember only the moment that I went totally crazy after the end of the breakdown and not much more.

Yeah, that's another aspect of it. I'll be convinced that it's by a certain artist or from a certain compilation, and play every track in search of it, and usually when it does come to me, I'll realise I was miles out.

I have had a loop of the build-up and break of Re:Locate feat Menno de Jong - Spirit stuck in my head for the past 2 days

Posted by Arraias on Apr-16-2007 23:44:

yes, sometimes happens with me too.

I had a melody stuck in my head for years, but could never figure out which track it was.

Finally in 2005 I heard it and got the name of it. Young Parisians - U Write The Rules (Solarstone Remix)

It's such a well known track that if I could have replicated the melody someone would have spotted it straight away, but I never did so I had to wait.

Mine too.. I heard it 30.04.2004 and im still searching

Posted by Fresh Prince on Apr-18-2007 09:52:

This happens to me all the time, especially because I don't
memorize or listen to songs with lyrics so I just sort of humm
it to myself, and for melodic stuff even more so, then I end up
playing them bit by bit in my mind when I'm at work.

Posted by ilia on Apr-18-2007 12:20:

Yeah this happens to me too. Though trying to sing the fragment to some of my dj friends is funny to say the least.

random factor - just play
and knights of the jaguar are always in my fucking head

Posted by tctitan on Apr-19-2007 16:01:

hell ya this happens to me constantly, it irks me to no end when i can't id also. one i've had in my head for 6 yrs. now is from a promo cd made by george acosta for xm radio back in like 01. it was such a killer track but the only part i can remember is some female vocals "....relax, and let your mind go"...pisses me off to no end

Jesus this is weird. I came across this thread earlier today and by pure chance later on I found the tune I was after.

In case any of you give a fuck it was Way Out West - Shark Hunt.

Weird. Weird. Weird.
