You saw how nerve-wracked I was on Friday? Be lucky you don't have 1100 people to answer to! hahahaha not to mention a big German guy haha jk

good luck!!!

take a deep breath before you present and speak clearly and slowly, a slow speaker is always more effective than a fast speaker, plus you are less likely to stumble in your speech...

Also do not think of the audience as a bunch of well-educated people with a great deal more experience than you, think of them as your peers.

Remember that this is YOUR thesis, YOU are the expert in this field, not them.

Good luck.

start off with a joke to break the ice with the crowd... that's what i always do... then it flows from there

Posted by kingchinc on Apr-17-2007 01:43:

eh I dunno about the joke, sometimes it works, but most of the time IMO it takes away from the presentation and the crowd usually does not take you as seriously.

You have no need to worry you know all this stuff, you'll be fine. GOOD LUCK (not that you need it).

Think of it this way once you're done with this school is almost over for GOOD!!!!

Posted by ReenTeenTeen on Apr-17-2007 02:05:

Sorry for the joke but I figured you might want something to help your nurves relax.

I peronally just never make a big deal out of situation like yours and just do what I got to do and it just might have something to do with being a man. (I swear NIKE stole my life moddo for their ads)

Just picture each person in the room as Armin, Tiesto, Armin, Ferry, Armin, PVD, Armin, SVD, ARmin (you get the point)

You'll be great!

Good luck and let us know how it went! My friend just did hers and she said they tore it apart and disproved her thesis, and she felt like she fucked up big time and was gonna fail, and then they said, "By the way, it was actually pretty good, you graduate with honors." lol.. If you worked hard and know your paper inside out you'll be fine. Stand by your conclusions but also show a flexibility to appreciate other points of view - if they say something that makes sense but contradicts you try to incorporate your view into their conclusion and make them mesh into something that's in your favor

I'll have to look back at this thread next January

harro, that was so genius-- and very practical advice as well!!

*high 5s kels* good luck!!!!

Posted by chimera66 on Apr-17-2007 03:59:

you KNOW your subject matter better than anyone else in that room and if someone IS a specilist in you particular field you've been studying it for at least a year so it's not like you are going in their unprepared. i wouldn't make a joke but start out with solid facts like you know who you are and what you studied from there let the powerpoint guide you...you'll be fine i'm sure

also, think you were probably more nervous to meet preach that that worked out well

Posted by jerZ07002 on Apr-17-2007 04:02:

Great advice. Forget what everyone else said....excpet about getting a good nights sleep, and listen to this advice.

Stand tall with good posture, smile, think things through before speaking, speak at a slow steady pace, and clearly, look everyone in the eyes and make them feel like you are speaking to them personally.

Most importantly if you mess up, brush it off and just keep going!

Good Luck

Before my PhD oral exam I took a big shot o' whiskey... no joke. It's just enough to take the edge off... but that's just me
Good luck!
