Cherry Beach Developments

I was just wondering has anyone been to Cherry Beach recently. I heard soccer fields are supposed to be built there and it was scheduled for this spring. Has the area been cleared yet?

Soccer fields are fine, but I just hope they keep the trees.

Partying at night surrounded by trees, is an awesome feeling.

The last I heard...

quote:
The trees on the sand by the water remain. The shoreline remains. But everything north of the paved Martin Goodman bicycle path is clear cut and extending east to the driveway to the yacht club. Beyond that, those trees also remain. In other words, that magical stand of Sumachs that canopied those neat trails to our clearing - gone - those whisps of long feild grasses and islands of trees where we lay our blankets to chill with our tribe and listen to enchanting sounds of Promise - gone!!!

Not a shred of plant life remains in a big square area - Id say about 4 - 6 acres. Caterpillar bulldozers and steam shovels have scraped a thick layer of light brown sandy soil up and into neat piles waiting to be lifted into dump trucks by backhoes. Yeah burn the diesel !!! And a big black pile of rich organic earth has also been plopped there waiting to be spread and graded by the bulldozers etc

I am still surprised that you are still surprised you have never been to cherry beach, but probably the next time you are still surprised i will not still be surprised.

Although it's dissapointing that this is getting paved over, I'm sure another venue for outdoor morning festivities will pop up this summer. Now that The Docks is putting their South Beach Sundays in the Next Level patio (inside), and the location of Promise Parties is gone, there will be an unmet demand for an outdoor venue on Sundays.

Tennis involves games; therefore, games are a good thing!

lmao oh shit. Peter, I can't imagine a better way to spend my Sunday morning Cherry Beach visit than with you and the boys joining Nada and us. I'd bring 2-3 copies of whatever sets we want to play and we'll sync them to combine one awesome sound!!!!!

TAKE THAT, CENTRE ISLAND!!!!!

I got some more info from Promise organizers.

Soccer fields are being built and there are more developments to come.
Developments in that area would be good if the city decides to turn it into public playground IMO(soccer fields, parks, kids playgrounds...) but I would hate to see condos popping up like at the Harbourfront
There was an unsuccessful petition to stop soccer fields being built.
see here

The future of Promise Sundays is still unknown, however as per Dave and Irving- Promise organizers- not all is lost and the event can take place in a different area of the beach. Everyone is encouraged to contact their city councillor or Paula Fletcher, councillor for the ward where Cherry Beach is located and let them know you want some fun in the sun this summer!

From the promise mailing list:

Cherry beach Promise summer party update take action RIGHT NOW.

Recently, we sent out this email below to our list and there needs to be more responses to it. We have seen some incredibly intelligent and impassioned emails to the city councillor, but it's nowhere near enough. City council is in the process RIGHT NOW of deciding what to do with Cherry Beach Picnic parties and you get to be heard. This is not our event, this is your event. We hold it because so many people want it to happen. Please dont assume that everyone else is writing something to city council, because theyre not. This is our one chance, all of us, to make an actual difference in our city and be able to do what we want to all summer - so help us make it happen for you. Write something, no matter how simple, to Paula Fletcher.

The email from last week:

We are currently working with the city on our future Sunday Afternoon Promise Picnics and we need your contribution with these changes to make the events even better. To help, please send emails to the city councillor who takes care of that area - Paula Fletcher. Shes been quite positive with us so far and any good emails that you send will make her feel that much stronger about her support of all of us. Let her know what a worthwhile cultural, social and musical event Cherry Beach Sundays are, how peaceful and clean it is, about any friends or good times you may have experienced down there, and what it means to you and your family and our city. Please avoid negative comments about cops or bylaw officers or the like, that wont help in this case. Do point out if you are constituent of her ward (if you live near Broadview or Riverdale or Leslieville), that helps.

Send nice Cherry Beach emails to Paula Fletcher at [email protected] (and copy us too [email protected]).

Thanks and heres a link to an article relating to the situation in Now this week. http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/20...cityinbrief.php

The artist rendering on the billboard below probably shows what is is supposed to look like when finished on the left, and what used to look like on the right.

I don't know why they need more sports fields, there are tons around the east end here that are hardly ever used.

The treed area where promise Sundays used to be is a big pile of dirt:

How the provincial and federal governments can sponsor this insane sportsfield idea is beyond me:

If you are wondering where the trees went, here they are:

Thanks for that info basilisk. I am a resident within Ms Fletcher's ward and I will write a quick letter to support cherry beach parties.
