what do you guys think of the media coverage...

i peronally hate it. i dont understand how they can spend sooooooooooo much time just on one story?

example: anna nicole smith, that radio guy, VT...
i mean yes, they are stories, but i dont need ALL DAY coverage of the same shit in 5 news channels.

it gets me irritaded, so does anyone enjoy the full time coverage? i mean, i cant think of anyone who would... so why do they do it there are other news ffs.

There was a great article in the NY Times about this yesterday.

Basically, it just said that the American public response en mass is utterly predictable when it comes to big/tragic news stories, and elaborated on the inevitable cycle of events/response/news that follows something like what happened on Monday.

It was pretty spot on.

Posted by igottaknow on Apr-19-2007 00:37:

why do you think they call it a media circus?

btw, i'm embarrassed to admit i'm miss the OJ coverage.

Posted by Frenchie on Apr-19-2007 00:40:

OJ car chase > everything else OJ

Posted by Project-K on Apr-19-2007 00:41:

I remember the OJ car chase simulator flash game

If you kept up-to-date on the VT thread that day, you'd know why I hated the coverage. I seriously despise mass media.

Solution: Watch news for 10 minutes, turn of TV and the spend remaining 23 hours & 50 minutes trying to get it in the pooper

fuck geraldo

It is like rubbernecking a bad car accident. Why do people do it?

Same thing with media, the public just keep watching.

Posted by requiemofnanqel on Apr-19-2007 15:52:

Over all I think the media coverage in the U.S. is done in a poor manner.

Now my question is whether it differs in other countries, or is it just as bad?

Posted by FallingMoon on Apr-19-2007 15:58:

I agree.

When the Tsunami happened claiming over 1000 lives, where was all the coverage??
They tend to focus on lesser important things than a lot of tragedies that happen elsewhere.

I exclude the VT thing, that was bad but it doesn't need to be playing over & over...esp the tapes sent to NBC of him rambling like a lunatic.

it is pretty ridiculous, and it's a large part of the reason why i just don't care to watch/read the news.

the extent of the news coverage i get is provided by The Daily Show, the 15 minutes that i might spend listening to NPR on a random morning while driving to work, and through conversations with my mom and Rob.

Same. I usually try not to watch it. If I do it'll only be my local five o'clock news station. Other than that, I just check my Google homepage with RSS feeds from Reuters, BBC, CNN, local news, etc. Just a quick scan tells me everything that's going on, sans bullshit.

Posted by denys envy on Apr-19-2007 16:26:

meh, as long as this shit stays away from Comedy Central/Adult Swim/ESPN I'm alright. Don't really watch much TV as it is. If I really feel like it I'll catch up with it online.

If you're watching CNN all day long and then complaining about which stories they cover you got other problems.

Posted by Scottaculous on Apr-19-2007 16:40:

In recent years, the Anna Nicole coverage was the worse. No one I knew cared.

Posted by PvDoBseSSioN on Apr-19-2007 16:44:

speaking of that, my dad got called to VA Tech for 10 days.... he works for the news

how much are they gonna elaborate on that

Posted by nchs09 on Apr-19-2007 17:10:

ok, so i can see noone likes the 24/7 coverage of 1 story, so why do the news networks do it? wtf..

i dont see the need 10 psychologists trying to figure out what was going on in the head of a patient they didnt even know. grrrr

Posted by tubularbills on Apr-20-2007 01:29:

i read an article [on CNN, ironically enough] today that a lot of the VT students are upset about all the media coverage.

i haven't really been watching the news a whole lot lately [mainly just at work online], but i think perhaps its getting a bit too much. when they start interfering w/ people's daily activities...especially around a tragedy...it's kinda annoying.

howeve,r i have to admit, i was absolutely glued to CNN when Katrina came ashore back in 05. literally, i watched it for almost 8 hours a day for like a week. anytime i had a break.

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Apr-20-2007 01:31:

good article

was VT shooter possessed by the devil?

Posted by Mr. Pink on Apr-20-2007 01:32:

Rasta

everything is based on controlled agenda setting.

all the big wigs push for is entertaining the audience.

if huge media conglomerates decided that manatees and brussel sprouts were the main commodity of this world...... then so be it!

we would love manatees and brussel sprouts.

and it would be swell.

actually we talked about this same subject today in my communications class..... then the class turned into a bunch of emotional sons of bitches.... then i brought up how 32 dead americans make it in the nwes, but not 100 and something Iraqis dont... and then the teacher was like "yaa......... ahhhh anyhow back to the VG subject"

i was like "FUCK SAKE!"

i'm totally not trying to start a debate here or anything, but.....

i hear about car-bombings in iraq a lot [and how many of iraqis [i guess, plus americans or other culturs]] die.

really tho, its just because we're such a sensationalist society. i mean, the same media went nuts over columbine and stuff like that.

it's the "hot story" right now because it hasn't happened in awhile. if the same thing happened on a monthly basis, it would just be on your local evening news.

you mean bombings in iraq.. they happen almost every day... maybe im exagerating but @ leats 3 times a week... nothing that big has happened in a while yes, but poeple die everyday over there.....

both situations are bad, here with what just happened and what has been happening in iraq for the past years. imagine what just happened here, everyday.... just to put things in perspective

now i know they are different settings... but i was just trying to make a point in class........
