Subject: Final Essay
Sent: April 20, 2007 12:24 PM
After considering the arguments and request of several students following this past Thursday's class, I have decided to make our final essay optional. If, after seeing your Essay 1 grade and evaluating your overall grade status, you decide that the final essay is not necessary, you may skip it. We will discuss on Tuesday.

i am going to stalk your entire class now.

Pretty damn sweet. Same thing happened to us after our college went on strike last year towards the end of the semester, some of the classes canceled the final huge assignments.

I will now argue with every prof about every paper I ever have to write because according to you it works.

well, he had a family illness, so he is super late grading our midterm (first essay).. he hasnt graded mine yet.
so he is now catching up.. so we were like "cmon, it will be easier on you... less stress, less papers.... better evaluation sheets
"
it worked
but i thin mostly because he has had a rough year..
and it was the first time he tought this class, well not the class but this size class.

We had something like that last semester where our prof's daughter got this weird fucked up medieval disease in France and was sick for the whole semester so the prof would come into class crying and say it would be difficult for her to teach that day. We got out of at least one midterm and at least one paper because of it. It was sad to see her cry all the time though

oh man must of been rough on her. poor gal.
ya i dont think it hits that close to home for this professor, i think his mum was sick, but she lives far away.. or something, nothing terrible.

i always liked it when teachers/profs did that - letting you do one essay or something and if it was good enough, not having to take a final or another exam or something. its rare, but great when it happens

I had this class once where if we made an extra essay, instead of it averaging with the main project and the exam, it ADDED several points to it. The teacher was ultra positive correcting the things too. Some people ended the semester with grades of 22 and 21 in a scale of 1 to 20.
In another class with the same teacher, all we had to do was a programming project and a small essay. No exam, nothing else. That guy rocked for getting good grades, but was terrible at actually teaching.

that's awesome... i've had a couple of professors who modified assignments by either:
a) cancelling a final paper
b) cancelling a final exam
c) letting you drop the lowest grade
d) having an optional final ...if your grade sucks you can take the exam to lift the grade

I made it so that if you averaged a 93% on the first 3 exams you didn't have to take the final exam.
and as a teaching rule, they cannot increase your workload from the syllabus, so no new assignments or anything, they can only change things by making it easier for students (all students, cannot show preference).
