Jeep commercial plays Time of Our Lives
Just saw a Jeep commercial that has Paul van Dyk/Vega4's Time of Our Lives playing over the jeep driving through a forest and an announcer spelling out the details.

Just heard a commercial on our local tv and there was 'He's A Pirate' playing in the background.

Everytime I see a commercial with electronic music in the states, it breaks my heart. It's considered novelty music to Americans. Commercial and show music are reserved for novelty music.
The rest of the world is lucky. Everytime I see someone outside of north america say "dance music is dead" on this board, I laugh at that spoiled brat. They don't know how good they have it!

This doesn't seem to make any sense. How good do we have it then?

I heard Leftfield - Song Of Life on some strange humour show in a sports channel where 2 chicks make fun of footballers.

Well here is what Jes said on a trance.nu interview
| quote: |
Trance.nu: What do you think of the current state of trance or EDM in general in the United States?
Jes: Its funny, because its not so popular as it is in Europe. But it dominates TV, commercials, film. Its so interesting to me, because even making a record and people knowing what Ive done and what I do, is almost, in certain areas, looked down upon in a way. Youre seen as a dance music artist. Personally I believe that we will move forward and crossover. And I think it already has, but I think people arent acknowledging it or want to admit it. So I hope to be part of it. I know myself; Im always pushing to achieve that. As The Rush Comes was played on national radio. We actually lost a lot of dance stations. We dont have that many dance radio stations in America. But internet has helped a lot; it is all over the place. Were not going away. Were going to keep it going, but its definitely different in America. |
Like she said, it's dominates commercials, tv, and film. For some reason, america as a whole doesn't see it as legitimate music, or music at all. It's novelty music to a lot of people, and it's definately looked down upon.
There are almost no dance radio stations here, and when there were around the late 90s, it was filled with music that a lot of TAs probobly wouldn't like. In my only dance station (probobly owned by super corp. Clear Channel) they only played dance remixes of top 40 songs, tons of Oakie, dance songs that were 5 years old, madonna, and sandstorm. Eurodancey music wasn't doing too well in the ratings so they started playing disco with the euro dancey stuff. That didn't work so that dance music station was transformed into a hip hop/rnb/reggaeton dance music station.
The only radio station here in my part of california that plays what some tas will call "more sophisticated" stuff plays late at night on fridays/weekends iirc. They'd play stuff from prog psy to armin type stuff. I think that show got cancelled.
As for the parties, you can find big names in a lot of clubs in my part of the states. If you want to go to some more underground places, you gotta really find it. 8-10 years ago, chances are you knew someone who was throwing a party and it was easier to find.
The interview with Jes can be found here for those wh o are interested: http://www.trance.nu/v3/interview_show.php?id=253

Well, she's wrong. Maybe in certain parts of europe but mostly it's only the mainstream stuff that hits the airwaves/tv (surprisingly enough).
People over here might be more open minded but it doesn't mean we actually get any more of this so-called "more sophisticated" EDM anywhere any more than you do. Though I don't think it really has anything to do with this topic anyway.

That's a load of bullshit. They'll use whatever music they think will increase the impact of the commercial/scene. A car company (I think it was Cadillac) in the US tried to pay The Doors $500,000 to use Break On Through in an advert. Tell me that's novelty music.
I also find in interesting that I'm the first Englishman to add to this thread. You won't find many of us in this kind of thread because we hear electronic music on the TV all the time. Our lists would be longer than the rest of the thread. Does that mean electronic music is trivialised in this country? Of course not. It's as strong here as anywhere in the world.
Electronic music gets used a lot in adverts or on TV or in films because it's predominantly instrumental. Instrumental music makes better background music. It's less intrusive and it doesn't have its own lyrical message to fuck around with the message of the scene. A good example is Rob Dougan's album "Furious Angels", which is split into two discs: the vocal versions and the instrumentals. I've heard just about every single track on that album on TV or on films, and every time I've heard one, it's been the instrumental version.
